Peter parked the Range Rover in front of the cabin and got out, stretching; it had been a long drive from the city. The place he had rented was a large log home, two floors with three bedrooms, one for Mark and me, one for Peter, and one for Gary. There were chimneys at both ends of the house, and a number of small outbuildings. It looked rustic, but the agent had assured us that it was completely modern inside.

Peter had booked the cabin for the four of us weeks ago, counting on snow. The agent promised snow, saying there was always a foot or two by this time of year. His estimate was a little off. Channel Four had reported record-level snowfall, but that was last week. The rangers had reported that the roads had been plowed, and that we actually did have access to get the Range Rover up to the cabin. They said that as long as we brought supplies with us for the whole week, we would have the time of our lives.

Mark and I had gotten married last spring, a June wedding, and Gary and Peter had been groomsmen.
