    Chapter One

I can’t breathe. I can’t move. My eyes fly open and I can smell the smoke, my lungs are already sore so even though I want to scream, I can’t. I keep trying to get up and run or reach out to grab my phone that is always, always on my nightstand, but my body won’t listen. I slide my eyes to the left and he’s there, his eyes are wide open. I think he is talking to me, but I can’t hear what he’s saying. He leans in and kisses my cheek and I swear he smiles, just before the flames hit his back.

My own hand is at my throat and I can hear a banging down the hall. When my eyes focus, I remember I’m in a hotel room, a pretty shitty one. I can still smell the fire from my dream and I try to shake my head to get rid of the memory. When I roll over and look at the clock it’s only five thirty-two a.m. great, this ought to be a fun day. Not sleeping really isn’t new for me but seeing as I only threw myself into bed two hours ago, I was hoping for a good stretch this time. I stare at the clock until it says five thirty-three, then I get up, shower, and hope to find coffee. Then it’s time to get back on the road.

I’m currently thanking myself for having my body wash in my suitcase, the smell is wiping the stench of non-existent flames from my mind and I feel like I’ve been on the road for weeks, and though this is the worst hotel so far, the bathroom is actually not so bad. At least this one has a shower curtain; it may have been a white one at some point years ago, but at least it’s still it’s here. So I take my time and use up the body wash to get rid of the memories.

When I get out to my car and take a look around. When I got here yesterday it was dark and I hadn’t noticed any other buildings. I realize it’s because there aren’t any.

    So much for coffee.

It took thirty minutes on the road, before I finally find my caffeine. I get two of the biggest cups they have. There’s only another four or five hours to go, but the pit stops will be worth not falling asleep at the wheel. I plug my new address into the GPS, and turn off the annoying voice that comes with it then I turned up my music. The drive wasn’t as boring as I feared it would be. At least there are mountains and wild flowers to look at. Once I hit the Wyoming border, the car was filled with a strange sense of peace. It was unreal how quickly I felt at ease here. It was good to be home.

Ok, home is a relative term. I’d never actually been in this state before and I didn’t even pick the new place I would be staying at. I had left the old place without looking back and without knowing where I was going to end up. Then I found an old friend on online and here I am. He’d made all of the arrangements for me; I just drove.

Sometime later, I pulled into a cookie-cutter neighborhood of townhomes. They were all neutral earthy tones that blended in with the mountains, and except for the splash of color from flowers in the planters at some of the homes, there was no other color. Perfect. I don’t have a green thumb and I didn’t want to stand out. I barely wanted to stand in.

I found my new driveway; it even had a garage. The first thing that hit me when I stepped out of the car was the air. It smelled so clean and there was just enough of a breeze to make this was a cleansing moment, a new beginning. Blowing away the past and starting over.

Most of what I owned was sitting in a dumpster looking container; it should be here early tomorrow morning. Everything I’d needed for now was in the back of the truck so I started by grabbing my suitcases and went to the front door. I stood there for a moment, a little overwhelmed; this is the first place I can call my own. Maybe I should find a way to celebrate later.

I found the spare key under the mat and put it to the lock. Here goes nothing. The door swung open and I could see the stairs that led into a basement, and stairs that went up into what was probably a living room. I walked up slowly, ok, cautiously. There was probably no one here, Tate didn’t even know I was close yet, but you can never be too careful.

At the top of the stairs directly in front of me, there was a kitchen. To the left a living room with another hallway (bedrooms I assume) and a very short hallway to my right that went directly into the master bedroom. I went there first and it. Was. Awesome.

There were floor to ceiling windows with blinds and curtains already in place (awesome) and a huge walk in closet that would house way more clothes than I could possibly collect in a lifetime. And the bathroom?

Also huge! There was a separate tub with jets that looked like it was big enough for two. The shower took up half of the other wall on the left and had six showerheads. I couldn’t wait to try it out.

Unloading the car only took about twenty minutes and even though I had showered at the hotel, I had to try this one out. How could I not? There were so many showerheads I felt like I was taking a bath standing up. Who ever came up with this idea was a genius. There was a good possibility I could get lost in here for hours.

Once I pulled myself out and got dressed I did a quick check of the basement and the other rooms. One will probably be an office of sorts and the other…well, I’m not so sure yet. The kitchen had new, stainless steel appliances and just for the heck of it, I opened the fridge.

    Tate is also awesome.

The biggest fruit basket I had ever seen was inside my new fridge, with a bottle of champagne next to it. There was also a note.

-Hope this is still good by the time you get it- T

I laughed, well, giggled, but it was progress.

I snagged an apple and grabbed my purse. It was still early, but I had seen a Target on my way in and I’d prefer to sleep on an air mattress instead of the floor tonight. So I took my few moments of happiness and bounced back out to my car. I am so glad I found Tate and that I let him talk me into coming here.

Three hundred dollars later with an air mattress, sheets, shampoo, make up, food, and a bunch of other useless crap I just had to have but probably won’t ever use, I made my way back home. Ha! Home, that sounded nice. But I had to jokingly curse Tate in my head; I hope he pays well. Though, I guess I didn’t actually need the money.

I got almost everything from the car unpacked; then I got bored. I was over all of the unpacking and arranging, it was late afternoon and I had a new town to explore. So, even though I had bought food, I wanted to go out. I mean really, who wants to stay home all night with no TV or radio, when they can go out and see the sights? Certainly not this girl!

    Chapter Two

There was an old rundown looking place that wasn’t too far off the beaten path. It looked like there should be bikers hanging out front and a requirement of some type of leather on in order to get in. Surprisingly, there were no bikers in sight and my jean skirt and t-shirt seemed to be ok attire. I decided to go easy and get a BLT and a vodka and cranberry because, well I could.

I was still there an hour later, mostly because I had brought out my iPad and was lost in the pages of a new book. Thankfully, I knew how to multitask and was keeping an eye on the room. I don’t like surprises.

Which is why, when I got up to go, I was surprised to hear my name from behind me. Before I even turned around, I was giggling. I barely had him in my sights
