tmp_fc37a8ea7a1860b00fdca10775f38087_lCUhZE_html_1b9cd0d4.jpgYou’re a parent or grandparent of a child who will soon become a bar mitzvah. Congratulations! Of course, you’ll need to speak or give a toast at the reception.
It’s an honor to speak at such an important occasion in the life of a child, and you know this, so you accept the responsibility of preparing a little something to say once all the guests take their seats. Still, you might have a few of your own hang-ups to get past to give a successful speech. You avoided public speaking classes all through school and avoid it whenever possible, or maybe you’re scared of stumbling over your words and making a fool of yourself in front of all your friends, relatives, and in-laws. Public speaking tops the list of most common fears, so at least you’re not alone, right?
You might be on the opposite end of the spectrum. Public speaking might not be a big deal to you if you make presentations at work on a regular basis. Some of you could be regular yentes and would even join Toastmasters if their meetings didn’t conflict with your other obligations, you would. There’s something about this event, though, that makes you feel as uneasy as you feel excited. You’ve attended plenty of bat mitzvahs and feel like you hear the same old spiel recycled at each one—and that’s not how you want your speech to come across to your guests. The weight is heavy on your shoulders, and you don’t want to mess it up.
You might belong to a third cast of characters: the one that doesn’t really know what to say and doesn’t know where to begin. Maybe you didn’t grow up in a Jewish home—or maybe you did, but you were, as writer A.J. Jacobs says, I’m Jewish in the same way that Olive Garden is an Italian restaurant. Which is to say: not very.
That’s where this book comes in.
The best way to combat fear and anxiety is to prepare yourself as much as possible for whatever it is
