    Introduction

This book introduces a system that has to do with enhancing the typing you do. It’s a system of typing that uses a great many abbreviations. I’ve coined the word, brevy for a single abbreviation and the word brevies for several, or many, of them.

This book is for you if you do a good deal of typing using Microsoft Word in your personal or business life. If you’re already a skilled typist, this book will enhance your craft; if not so skilled, or if you are handicapped in your typing skill, I feel this book will increase the quality of what you type and also improve your typing speed. As a bonus, in addition to these benefits, you’ll have fun learning the techniques I offer in this book.

Microsoft Word employs a file named AutoCorrect that monitors your work as you type. This file has the ability to correct your work if you inadvertently misspell certain troublesome words. Here are some examples. If you type the word agresive incorrectly, as I have just done, the AutoCorrect file will change what you type to aggressive. If you type alraedy, the AutoCorrect file will immediately correct the spelling and type already. If you type havebeen without the space between the words, the AutoCorrect file will change what you have typed to have been. These changes are fast and automatic. You may not even know that you made a mistake.

AutoCorrect is not a mind reader. It doesn’t know all the ways that people can make mistakes as they type but it does its best to correct the mistakes that a lot of people make.

In this book I show that AutoCorrect can do much more than simply correct the errors that you might make. It can help make you a better speller and faster typist.

The main skill you’ll learn in this book is that of using the AutoCorrect file to create brevies for words and phrases you use often. For example, when you wish to type words like about, choice, and woman, you’ll save time by typing abou, choic, and woma instead. In these examples, note that each of the words has dropped its last letter. These shortened words have become what I call brevies. When you type these brevies, AutoCorrect will change them to about, choice, and woman. This is the way you’ll see them on the screen. The changes will happen so quickly, there will be no interruptions in what you are typing; therefore, you’ll get the words on the screen with fewer keystrokes in less time.

This system will also allow prefixes in words help you type faster. For example certain prefixes in words can be shortened. Such words as before, compare, and extreme can
