First Aid for Your Emotional Hurts - Dr. Edward E Moody Jr.
FINDING HELP
Perhaps you are at a point in your life where you do not know what to do. You’ve picked up this booklet because you are overwhelmed with emotional pain. Everyone will experience emotional hurt at some point in life. We may experience it after the death of someone close to us or while enduring a chronic illness. Emotional hurt may be the result of experiencing a traumatic event or a problem from the past that will not go away. Issues ranging from an unexpected pregnancy to being overwhelmed by debt may upset our sense of balance. Family problems can lead to emotional hurt like a marriage that is not what it could be, one that has ended with divorce or a relationship plagued by abuse. Emotional hurt can be self-inflicted (e.g., stemming from substance abuse or gambling) or unavoidable like schizophrenia or another chronic illness. It could simply be a nagging sense that you aren’t what you ought to be.
The U.S Surgeon General has estimated that 28% of the adult population in the United States suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder.¹
You may be experiencing emotional hurt as a result of a diagnosable mental disorder (e.g., major depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders). Whatever the situation, you know you need help. Where can you go?
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. —Mathew 11:28
Go to God
It is more than a cliché. Start by looking to God. Pick up a Bible and search for help there. What do we know about God? We know He has promised to give us rest; He has good plans for us; if you have a relationship with God He never leaves you nor forsakes you.
God’s plans for you: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11
God is with you: Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
Wherever you go God is there: For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39
Fear not, I am the one who helps you. Isaiah 41:13b
The Scriptures tell us to place our faith in Jesus Christ, submit to following Him, and we will be saved. Perhaps that is the first step for you. Your first step is to go to God.
Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and
