About this ebook
Stephen C. Porter
Stephen C. Porter, who currently resides in New Brunswick, Canada, grew up reading the old western hardcovers from the early 1900s. With the loss of Louis L'Amour, he has not discovered any new writers of this type of literature anymore. Using Mr. L'Amour's style as his guide, he has written Talking Fire Hand, his first western.

Always Learning - Stephen C. Porter
author comments
For the first twenty five years of my life I was a non-believer. I later realized that I was a fool’s fool. I lived impulsively and recklessly, doing whatever I wanted to regardless of who it hurt or what the consequences were.
Then Jesus showed me that He was real and that I had been living a lie, so I accepted Him as my Lord and friend. I fell in love with Him and read His word daily just so that I could know Him. I learned that He had died to pay the price for all the foolishness I had done. In His death, He showed me true love.
I read the Bible from cover to cover so that I wouldn’t miss anything. I noticed that some parts started to make sense to me and would fit together with other scripture that I had read.
Then I read 1 Corinthians 1:27, which says, But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.
Jesus gave me that scripture as a promise because I considered myself to be the most foolish person I knew. I wasn’t afraid or nervous; I was just interested to see how God was going to do that through me.
I soon found that I could not only understand scripture but understand how and why God did the things He did. I started talking to people about God and the Bible.
One rule I set out for myself was that in any discussion I had, I would never argue. When the talk turned into an argument, I would leave. Another rule I made for myself was never to discuss the other person as being wrong; instead, the Bible was always right.
I took on discussions with anyone who wanted to talk about scripture and soon found myself answering more and more of their questions and asking more and more questions they could not answer.
This was nothing I had done, since I have a difficult time memorizing scripture or remembering where things are in God’s word. But I have a wonderful relationship with Jesus and found that I could go to Him anytime and ask questions and get answers.
Because of the knowledge He has given me, I now have a responsibility to share this knowledge with others.
Luke 12:48 says, "But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more."
I started my teaching pages with two thoughts in mind. One was to give God’s people the simplest answers to the hardest questions so that they could answer other people’s questions with strength and confidence. Second, I decided to keep my writing short so that my readers could get the full understanding of my topic without getting bogged down with long lessons.
When I taught children in Sunday school, I discovered that people have an intense ability to absorb new information for fifteen minutes. After that, their attention starts to wane. That is why these teaching pages are done in a bathroom reader
type of format, so my readers can take a few minutes and understand one subject at a time.
These teachings are from my Christian teaching blog, Always Learning. It was the most consistent and longest running blog on the Eastern Canada newspaper website Canadaeast.com.
Anyone wishing to use the material here can do so free of charge, but I would like the credit awarded to myself or the book title, either in writing or by verbal agreement.
Here are my other titles, which are all westerns:

Why the Race Between Heaven and Hell?
People are too busy today with earning a living, raising kids and preparing for retirement to worry about heaven or hell. They can make that choice when they get there, right?
When we ‘earn a living’, are we not thinking about our future?
What are we raising our kids to be?
And ‘preparing for retirement’ is looking ahead to our future comforts and security, is it not?
We are struggling to make our future one that we can live in with death the inevitable end. Or is it? We all know that we are going to die; we don’t know when or where, but it is going to happen. What I hear is that, most people say they are ready to go just not right now.
What about the child that is aborted? Or the teen that dies in a car crash? Or the middle-aged man that dies of a heart attack? They were not ready to go, but they’re gone. Where?
We spend so much time, energy and money preparing for our future, before death. I would like us to look at our future, after death. To do that, we have to look at the big picture of who thought this all up; how it is supposed to work and where we fit into it all.
First of all, God created all this. Stay with me and I will tell you how and most importantly, why.
God is a Spirit. God is also ‘love’. Both of these things are pure energy. But God is energy with a thought and feeling process.
We all know that everything has energy. Everything is made up of atoms and, so, atoms are everywhere. Atoms are also energy.
We have made the mistake of thinking that energy is in everything. We get this from looking at the physical as the most important part of our make-up. Really, everything is in energy or God. Energy, life and/or God is everything and everywhere.
A person that does not see God is looking with the wrong part: his eyes. God can create a physical image of Himself but He is not a physical being. When Jesus said that when you have seen Him, you have seen His father, God, He was talking about His thought and feeling process that motivated His emotional and physical actions and reactions.
When we realize that God (energy) is everything and God is not hampered with time and space; then we know that the earth, space and everything in it was not there in the beginning. It was not brought from physical things to the place that it is now, but made from the energy of God where it was at the time that God made it.
An example would be a fish. It is born from its mother and travels through the water. It could travel through all the water in the world, but when it leaves the water, it will die. It still would not have seen all the world, planets, or space; but it is a part of the world, planets and space because it existed in them.
That is the relationship between God and man. We exist in Him. We are made in His image by having the same thought process ability, not the same physical appearance. I say ‘ability’ because we all do not think like God.
That’s how God created all this.
Now, the important question: Why?
God created everything; earth, animals, man, angels and heaven. He had the angels and heavenly ‘beasts’ before the earth so why was He not happy with that?
Satan, the most beautiful angel that God ever made, rebelled against Him and took one third of the angels with him. God could not trust them!
God wanted perfect love; a love that would trust Him without question, a love that would die for Him, a love that would last forever and never fail and, for all eternity, never change.
God was lonely. He wanted someone to accept and be with Him always. He wanted people He could trust.
So God created man and when man failed, He made a proving ground for man to see, love, repent and win. Our prize is to be with and love God and we can see and understand God by His Son, Jesus Christ.
Jesus bought our salvation on the cross, so that we can see the love of God, see our wickedness and be sorry for hurting the one we love; then repent and obey Him so we won’t do it again. By this, God is growing perfect love in us so that He can have people who love and trust Him without holding anything back.
God’s prize is us, in perfect love; our prize is God and Jesus, for all eternity.
Perfect love; isn’t it worth the effort?
2.
The Purpose of the Church
The church is God’s kingdom on this earth. When a soul makes a conscious decision to believe what they hear about Jesus Christ and accept Him as their Lord and saviour and ask Him for forgiveness for their sins, they enter the Kingdom of God. From that moment on their home is Heaven with God as their Father, Jesus as their Master, and brother and His people are their family.
God puts a new caring heart into that person and removes the selfish heart that they inherited from Adam’s curse on mankind.
They must be taught the way of God’s Kingdom, protected from God’s enemies and encouraged to spend time with and learn about Jesus.
As they mature in God’s love they will attract the attention of the people around them and will create different effects in them; curiosity, indifference, admiration, anger and even hate.
Our love for God and Jesus is our motivating force to honour Him with our praise, worship and actions.
Our love is hidden in our hearts and can only be seen by our actions. But because everyone can think that their actions are done in love for God or man, we must be continually questioning each others motives for what we do. Our enemies are trying to make us mistaken in our judgement of what God decided is right and because we are alone and immature, they are very convincing. That is why we are commanded to gather together in groups and learn from God and each other; to help each other stay right with God.
Those who are older and more mature in their love and faith in God are to help those who are younger or less mature in their faith and knowledge of God. This way, God’s people can help and protect each other.
By questioning and correcting each other in love we can keep each other from the mistakes of God’s enemies, whose eternal home will be outside, or away from God.
This world exists in God now, because God is everywhere and in everything; except the heart or mind consciousness of those that do not want Him in their life.
When a person’s decision is made to accept or reject God’s gift of true love and their life is over they, by their actions, will have shown God what their decision is and will have shown Him where they have chosen to spend eternity; with Him or without Him.
Those who have made the choice to love God forever are to protect and help those who are still making that decision.
3.
Know God?
God is only a mystery to those that perish; so says God’s word. So, if you want to perish, then you will not want to know God. Any excuse will do to ease your mind about not looking for God. Also, you will let anyone else’s negative words stop you from trying to find God.
The devil, demons and evil spirits all know God and are still going to perish in hell.
The goats in Jesus’ parable of the sheep and the goats knew about God and were rejected.
To know about God or know God will not get you into His kingdom, or heaven.
God wants us to love him. His word says that He knows them that love Him. So, it is not do you know God
but does God know you
.
Many say they love Him, go to church, sing His hymns and live a ‘good’ life. So how do we know who really knows God and how does God know who really loves Him?
He, and we, can know by their actions. Those that love God will obey Him. They will do what He tells them to do right now, tomorrow and always.
God’s word tells us that there are two main definitions for God’s word.
Rhema—God speaking directly to us.
Logos—what God has said to others and they have written down for us to read.
Seeing that God is one God, the two will always agree and confirm each other.
When God calls us to repent for our sins we can show God that we believe by doing what God has said that we must do. The steps proceed from there with God telling us what to do each day. We show God that we believe and love Him by doing what He tells us to do.
As we continue doing this, we see that God loves us and cares for our soul by developing our character to look like Him because He is love. This is an internal growth that can only be seen by our actions. To see this growth, one must understand God and be able to recognize the reasons why a person does the things they do. We understand and know God better and can communicate with Him easier because we become familiar with Him. This is a personal thing between us and God but can be seen by our actions.
As the relationship grows, love between you and God will grow. [This love starts as a choice, not a feeling.] You choose to continue to love God and show Him by your obedience to Him and God sees that He can trust you more and will give you more responsibility.
In this maturing of your love and faith you are able to help others to know God better and to choose to love Him and develop their own relationship with Him.
The kingdom of God will only be made up of those who will obey Him in love and God expects us to work with each other to accomplish this.
4.
The Heart [Your Heart]
God, by creating the world and mankind, is making pure love. Because God is love He is making people that will look, think and act just like Him.
The world is our proving ground. Here we have the choice to love and be like God or love the world and its pleasures.
The Bible speaks about this choice being made in our hearts. This is the home of our soul. The soul is the only part of you that is really yours. If you were to close your eyes and look inward, you would see you. [Your soul]
This soul [heart] makes the choices for everything in and about your life.
There are three choices for everything connected to the soul; like, dislike or neutral.
The soul [heart] is surrounded by three things, like layers.
The first is the spirit of life that God gave you at conception. This spirit has various parts both bringing information to the soul and taking the decisions of the soul back out to the flesh [your body—the next part of you.] Some of the parts of the spirit are love, joy, peace, anger, hate, jealousy, pain, lust, sorrow, etc.
The soul [heart] controls only the parts of the spirit that goes out. What comes in is felt by the spirit through the next part; the flesh. The part of the flesh that we control is called our body. Our body also has various parts that gather information, send it through the spirit to the soul and then reacts to the spirits that are sent back from the soul.
[I will do another paper on Good and evil
to explain the transfer of information through the spirit later.]
There is a second part of the flesh that we do not control. It is called ‘the world’ and is everything that we can see, smell, touch, feel or know that is physical.
The third layer is God and His kingdom. God is everywhere and in almost everything.
These three layers can travel back and forth through each other to some degree; i.e.; the spirit travels through the body [and, sometimes the world] as actions. The physical travels through the spirit as emotions. God travels back and forth through the flesh as actions and through the spirit as emotions touching all that He wants to in the way the He wants to.
People study and watch God move through the physical and call Him nature or physics and watch Him move through the spiritual and call Him psychology.
God is reading the messages sent out from the soul and sending back His messages in the hope that they will be correctly received. The enemies of God are also sending the soul messages with the hope of misleading the soul from God’s purpose.
Knowing God and His word is the strongest defence we have to not be misled.
5.
Good and Evil
There is a misconception that good and evil are physical things that we do.
Going to church, praying, caring for family, not being a drunk, not robbing a bank, not murdering someone, etc. are thought to be good things and cursing, raping, murdering, etc. are thought to be evil.
The physical is just a manifestation or what we can see as the end result of what the person is planning and thinking in their heart [soul].
Good and/or evil is a thought process that goes on in a person’s heart [soul].
Every person in the world wants to believe that they are right so when they desire something they look for a way to justify having it as right so they can justify getting it.
God’s word says that "Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin."
When you know to do something is good and do not do it, that is sin or evil.
When you know to not do something is evil and do it, that is evil or sin.
When you know to do something is good and do it, that is good.
When you know to not do something that is bad and not do it, that is good.
The key is not in the doing but in the knowing and making the proper decision in your actions about that knowledge. Our decisions are motivated by our heart [soul] and what we want or love the most.
God knows this and wants us to love Him most and believe Him when He tells us the right or wrong of each decision we make so we can know the good action to take.
Though God knows good and evil, and uses both, He is only good [love] and wants us to chose to be like Him.
To know, love and obey God all the time is good; to know and disobey God is evil and to choose not to know God is evil.
Good and evil are choices that we make that everyone can see by our actions that follow our decisions.
6.
The Powers That Be
God is all powerful but He has given powers to people, beings and things.
This power gives the owner authority over his, her or their, God given, area [life, space, influence, etc.].
God can give more or less power [authority] as He wants to. [He IS God.]
Just because God gives it, does not mean that all accept this power but God will hold us responsible for what is done with the power that He gives us; so, power and responsibility go together. Power is what we are given to work with and responsibility is what we send back.
Satan has power over one third of God’s angels and has caused them to fall with him. Satan had power over death but Jesus took that power away from him at the cross. Governments have power over their citizens. Fathers have power over their families. Pastors have power over their churches.
God will give power by giving people position. He gives people in government power of their elected position. [Dictators still have to have people obey them to stay in power.]
It is a chain of command where the spirit world has a direct influence on the physical world. [Angels command droughts, demons command sicknesses, etc.]
Depending on what position God has placed you in decides what power you have. [Ex; if God has given you children, you have the power of a father; if God has given you a wife, you have the power of a husband; [if God has given you a husband, you have the power of a wife.]
As mentioned, the power of position also brings the responsibility of that position and God will hold us to that responsibility. We will have to answer for our position power. God entrusts us with our positions and its power but can change that position, if He wishes to.
God is the master of all power and He has given this power to His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus exercises this power in the lives of His people by giving or taking away positions. [And giving the power associated with those positions]
Satan also has power and exercises this power in the lives of his people also. Satan’s power is allowed by God to give mankind the choice of obeying God’s appointed king, Jesus, or His enemy, Satan.
Even though God’s power is all powerful, we can still change the powers that are in our life by our choice of obedience to either God or Satan. Who we obey will be the master of the powers in our lives.

The Powers That Be For Us
There are two main areas of the powers in our lives; the powers that we do not control but are there from other sources and the powers that we can control [or chose to let control our lives].
There are obvious powers in our lives that we do not control. The power of God; the earth around us, gravity, sun and moon rising and falling, plant growth, air, space, etc.
There are also not so obvious powers that we do not control but are in our lives and are given authority over us and our world by God; our gender, our parents, our governments, our present location, etc.
Then there are unseen powers in our lives that we do not control but have a controlling influence in our lives; our heritage, our nationality, our upbringing, our social surroundings, the spirit world around us, angels and demons, most external influences near us, etc.
Because we have no control over these things, we should accept their presence and not let them bother us. However, we should recognize them as powers that operate and move and watch that we do not get in their way to our hurt. [Don’t walk off a cliff, step in front of a moving truck, stop breathing, put our hand into a fire or tick-off a demon-possessed person without God’s protection.]
Then there are the powers that we can control. We can choose to be a murderer and can act on that choice. Then we have set in motion all the influences [or powers] for the results of our choice. We can choose to be a cynic and, as we practise this attitude, will have a more cynical attitude as we progress. We can choose to start a rock rolling down a hill and can watch the power of the destruction that we have done. Then we will also receive the results of that destruction in the powers that come back to us from other beings.
We have made choices in the past that are still influencing our lives now with the powers of that decision. A small example of this can be seen when two people get married and put on their wedding rings. This was their choice but, later, they change their minds and take their wedding rings off. The mark or indent of the ring is still there and will tell everyone about their choice for a long time to come.
Another serious decision that some people make is to speed. This leads to a habit of speeding. This sets in motion the power of the results of your speeding; others see this and also do it. Sooner or later your speeding will get you a fine and cost you money or result in a crash that could take your life or the life of someone you love. The result of your choice set in motion the powers that dictate what happens along the way of this choice.
To choose to disobey God sets in motion the powers of disobedience in our lives and brings the results of our disobedience into our lives. The only way to change the influence of this power is to choose to obey God and act on that choice. This does not immediately change what has already been started but will change future actions brought on by the power of our first decision.
Most of the powers that are in our lives now are a result of our past decisions and are self inflicted.

Faith
If we believe something is true then our actions will show our faith in that belief.
A drug addict will jump off a tall building, if he believes he can fly. A driver will drive recklessly if he believes that disaster will not happen to him [or her]. A person will spend their last dollar buying something that they believe they need to make them happy, make them healthy or will give them security.
This ‘faith’ was based on what they believed.
We all have a ‘faith’ in something. Generally it is something that we were taught as a child and has worked for us in the past or something we heard or saw worked for others and we believe will work for us.
We were taught that ‘red’ was ‘red ‘and we believe this. By doing this, we showed that we have faith that what we were taught was true and acted upon that faith. In this case whenever we saw something red, we called it red and everyone with the same belief agreed with us.
This process of ‘faith’ started before we were born; we learned to trust the thump of our mother’s heart and associate it with security. We also learned from our parents as we grew. Along the way we also learned that some of the things we had learned or were learning were not true by what happened afterwards. Our ‘faith’ then took on a
