    FOREWORD

The accurate exegesis of God’s Word is imperative for anyone who wants to grow. There can be no development in your spiritual walk with God without the investment of a diligent and correct study in the text. To accomplish this, several internal and external principles must be present.

First, let’s look at the internal components. To begin, there must be a heart that desires to know God, initially. The Bible states he that cometh to God must believe that He is (Hebrews 11:6). Simply put, there must be a faith relationship between God and the Bible learner. God will not begin the relationship that will unlock His Word with a half-hearted search on the part of the reader. He requires a relationship that comes as a result of trusting His Son as Savior and Lord. The Scripture guarantees that without such a relationship, the natural heart will determine that the Word of God is a foolish and vain pursuit (I Corinthians 2:14). So, the first and most important requirement to clearly understanding the Word is a personal faith in God’s Son, Jesus Christ and a relationship of obedience to His word.

The second internal component is a heart that wants to know God, intimately. Hebrews 11 goes on to say, He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. In other words, God will not unleash the truth of His Word and will to the merely curious. Our Lord stated it this way in the Beatitudes, blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. The spiritually hungry refuse to starve. They will search and search until their desire is sated. It is this cadre of Christians that will delve deep into the mysteries of the Master. These are the saints to whom God will reveal Himself.

Externally, while at first the tools of Bible study are not so many in numbers, the library of the diligent will progressively increase. And regardless on the size of your Biblical collection, it will be irreplaceable in value. A beginning collection should include, a personal copy of the Bible that can be highlighted and written in. A notebook. A Bible dictionary; And finally, a complete concordance, such as the classic, Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance. All of these are great aids in Bible study. There are many other tools that can be useful in the study of the Word, such as commentaries, word studies and lexicons. Multiple translations are also sometimes helpful, however one must be careful to use only tools and translations that are theologically sound and are the products of godly authors*.

With these principles, and following the instructions on how to use this book, I am sure that the time you spend in these studies will help start you on your journey of knowing God in a deep and satisfying way.

May God bless you in this endeavor,

    PREFACE

Someone once said that writing a book, any book, should be as arduous as crossing a desert, but reading it shouldn’t be. I couldn’t agree more.

My staff and I have labored for many hours, upon days, upon weeks, upon—well, you get the picture. It took a lot to make this book a reality. At times I thought this would never happen. However, with loving saints praying for me, a great family behind me, the perfect God-send Melissa English (my Sasha) to do the impossible, and of course, having the matchless, all-loving, patient, and forgiving, Savior, JESUS, who makes dreams come true, this book of Lessons Through the Word is finally here.

Several years of prayer, and patience make up every study. I thank my Lord that each study for the most part is original. I say for the most part for two reasons. First, of course, because Christ is really the Author of all things good. And second, because many of the lessons included here have portions that I have learned from so many others.

My prayer is that everyone who will encounter this set of lessons will delve deep into the studies and pull from them treasures from the Word that will enrich their walk. Each lesson is designed to be both individually studied as well as with a group. They are divided into five sections so that following a theme or topic is possible.
