    THE UNIVERSAL FACTOR

    The Universal Factor involves fasting one day a week. Liquid fasting insures hydration of the body's systems at the cellular level and improves their functions. A zero cholesterol and fat intake is present on the fasting day. This lessens and helps to reverse cholesterol and atheromatous plaque build-up clogging the blood vessels in the peripheral vascular system and coronary arteries. Blood pressure is lowered which lessens the danger of strokes and heart attacks. The adverse effect of hypertension in the kidney capillaries is decreased. Kidney failure and dialysis is minimized.

    Very few drink the daily 6 – 8 glasses of water advised by urologists. The one day of liquids each week lessens the tendency towards dehydration. The low sodium fluid intake promotes a release of water from swollen or edematous, water logged body tissue and flushing out of toxins by the kidney urinary system. Urine flow through the kidneys is increased which prevents urinary tract infection and stone formation in some individuals. The gastro-intestinal tract is placed at rest from the digestion of solid food. The body systems such as the gall bladder, pancreas, liver and the enzyme transfer systems of the intestines are placed in a resting phase.

    Fasting places the physiology of the body in an idle or resting phase. This enables the immune system to recoup and function in a more healthy and protective fashion. It lessens the deterioration of the immune system that gradually occurs with the aging process, and therefore, establishes better defense barriers.

    Involuntary fasting due to famine and limited food intake occurred in past millennia due to the variables of food availability. It has become a part of our genetic background. Research studies have referred to a Theory of Fasting as assisting in destruction of diseased or abnormal cells, apoptosis, and recycling the fragments. Periods of fasting are opportunities used by the body for this cellular autolysis and will function towards increasing the body's immune response.

    There is one constant factor in all of the studies for losing weight. It involves burning more calories than are being consumed. That is a basic fact of life. Keeping the weight off and maintaining that desired weight are both equally important and difficult.

    We are a species that has evolved over many tens of thousands of years while surviving famine and starvation. We are not genetically programmed to survive and resist the present day epidemic of over-eating which leads to obesity and its degenerative effect on health. Many features of a healthy lifestyle are not given proper consideration. Three square meals a day did not exist in our past Stone Age background. Caloric restriction was always part of that ancestral lifestyle. Their life revolved around birth, survival, growth, and reproduction during a lifespan of 30 years.

    During the 19th century, the average life expectancy in the United States was approximately 40 years of age. This longevity range still exists today in some third world countries. The lifespan in the U.S. today is in the 75-to 80-year range. Based on Social Security statistics, there were 65,000 people over 100 years of age in the U.S. at the start of the 21st century.

    Our early Stone Age ancestors died of famine, infection, and injury. They also were subject to arthritic problems. They usually didn't survive long enough to develop the degenerative diseases we encounter today. These include heart and vascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, strokes, kidney failure, certain forms of cancer, cholesterol and lipid problems, gall bladder disease, pancreatitis, and obesity.

    My routine for helping patients to lose and maintain weight in a healthy manner has been to recommend consuming only liquids and/or fresh fruit one day each week. This is a semi-fast day rather than a true fast day. It is nice to be able to tell patients that they can have all the fresh fruit and/or fresh vegetables they want rather than constantly denying them foods.

    The one day of fasting and fresh fruit has come to mean many things to many people:

    Intake on this one day each week consists of unsweetened fruit juice such as orange and grapefruit juice and there are no restrictions on the choice or amount of fresh fruit. My juices of choice are orange and grapefruit juice based on nutrition and availability.

    1. Fruit has no sodium, and vegetables have a minimal amount of sodium. The body is given a chance to partially rid itself of the chronically, silent, waterlogged condition many of us maintain. This one day each week results in 52 days every year when we receive the benefits of avoiding the excessive amounts of sodium contained in packaged, processed, and prepared foods. Benefits include a decrease of fluid retention and, therefore, a weight loss.

    2. A day of exclusive consumption of fruit and juices becomes a day of hydration. Many of us go about in a semi-dehydrated state. Urologists routinely advise 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. As we age, we experience a decrease in reflexes, including the thirst reflex.

    3. One day of fresh fruit and liquids automatically means fewer calories that day compared to the other six days of the week.

    4. Most authorities do not consider this single day semi-fast to be unhealthy when compared with our daily over-indulgence of food leading to obesity and a 60% overweight U.S. population.

    5. A protein sparing effect is derived from fresh fruit and its complex carbohydrate structure. Both protein balance and muscle mass are maintained.

    6. Fruit and liquids day becomes a day for going to bed as early as 9:30 pm. thus avoiding the temptations of viewing food advertisements on TV - as well as the food itself. Many of us tend to suffer sleep deprivation. It's been stated that one third of the population gets less than 6 ½ hours of sleep each night instead of the recommended 7 to 8 hours. This sleep deprivation has an adverse effect on health, safety, and being overweight.

    7. There is a feeling of deep satisfaction that is enjoyed by an individual who can successfully do something by themselves. It becomes a positive accomplishment and a boost to their self-esteem.

    8. One day of fresh fruit each week has the following benefits: There is no fat, no sodium, no cholesterol, no refined carbohydrate products in fruit. It is low in calories. There is a normal balance of nature's fructose and glucose. This results in a normal insulin balance and avoids the insulin surge noted with refined carbohydrates. Fruit is metabolized mainly by the liver and not the pancreas. Fresh fruit is high in Vitamin C, high in potassium, high in antioxidants, high in bioflavonoids, high in fiber, and high in liquid content. Other vital nutrients in fruit include calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iron, and the vitamin B complex.

    9. Studies suggest that the immune system benefits from the semi-fast by placing the digestive and metabolic processes in an idle or resting phase. This enables the immune system to recuperate, be directed and function in a more healthy and protective fashion.

    10. The American Cancer Society offers dietary direction toward cancer prevention. The fresh fruit and liquid day fits into their guidelines.

    The Universal Factor, one day of liquids and fresh fruit each week, can be included in any of the multitude of diet and weight loss programs. Any person reading books and publications in an effort to lose weight, should consider the one day of liquids and fresh fruit to ensure their weight loss.

    A true fast for one day would be nothing but water for 24 hours. A semi-fast consists of unsweetened fruit juice such as orange or grapefruit juice and unlimited fresh fruit or vegetables.

    The program of fasting for two consecutive days can be accomplished more easily than you think. Individuals can customize a fasting program that fits into their weekly schedule.

    Those successfully fasting one day a week were surprised how good they felt the following morning and were not hungry. Most chose Monday for their fasting day after splurging over the weekend. Some people felt so wonderful that they continued the semi-fast for a second day. Remember, these are highly motivated individuals who had leveled off, maintained their weight and wished to lose a few more pounds. This one to two day semifast was followed in order to reach and maintain a new weight plateau. In other words, this is The Universal Factor to be used in any diet or program for weight loss and in maintaining weight for the long term.

    Always discuss fasting with your physician or professional who has reviewed your health record and blood chemistries.

    PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH

    Nutrition and weight control, along with a healthy diet and lifestyle have combined to form an ongoing direction in my medical practice.

    Obesity is now defined as a chronic disease in America. It leads to other chronic diseases such as hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease, strokes, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and certain types of cancer. The lifestyle approach described in this book lessens obesity and significantly reduces the dangers of arthritis, osteoporosis, gall bladder disease, pancreatitis, and possibly Alzheimer's Disease.

    The service that I sell is guidance by education and good healthy eating. Education of the patient has been accomplished by updated nutritional handouts over the past 15 years. It was an evolutionary process initiated with my nutritional books written for the pregnant woman. Many patients were enabled to achieve better health during pregnancy and delivery of their babies. Nine months of continual check-ups combined with following a healthy eating pattern minimized the complications of pregnancy.

    A Diet for OB's and the Obese Husband, which had been incorporated in the specialty of obstetrics during the 1950s and 60s was published in 1964. Through following this healthy eating plan, the problems caused by toxemia of pregnancy were minimized while ensuring a healthy mother and infant.

    After phasing out of obstetrics, I published The Orlando Diet Lifestyle for gynecology patients in 1986. A variety of customized nutritional handouts were given to my patients during the 1990s and early 2000s.

    The need for a healthy nutritional direction became apparent especially for those who don't cook. Handouts served their purpose during development and design of a cookbook for those who don't cook, The Oxymoron Cookbook. My own personal lifestyle qualifies me as one of these people who don't cook. Today, this group accounts for over 50% of the U.S. population.
