The Craigslist Hustle - LaJuan Stoxstill-Diggs

    Chapter 1: Introduction

You may say to yourself, Ok, I just spent money on this book, now will this book really help me make money? Well, I can tell you that if you have at least an ounce of hustle in you, then you will make money after reading this book. Hustle is having the desire to better your current financial situation, and then implementing a plan to make that money. There are a lot of people who want to hustle, but they don’t have legit or concrete ideas, so they end up becoming wage slaves for their employers for the rest of their lives. There is not anything wrong with having a job, especially during these rough economic times. Having a job is a plus. On the other hand, if you’re unemployed or not making as much money as you would like, then that’s where this book will come in handy. Once you decide on a market to hustle in, I’ll show you how you can use Craigslist to open up doors and opportunities you never imagined.

Buying lotto tickets everyday on a whim hoping to hit it big is not a hustle. Selling bootleg DVDs, CDs or narcotics is a type of a hustle, but very temporary. These types of hustles could land you in a permanent housing facility with a roommate named Bubba, and where dropping the soap could be a painful mistake if you know what I mean. If you don’t already have an idea in mind of the hustle that fits you, that’s okay. I’ll give you a few ideas and hopefully by the end of this book, you will know exactly what hustle will work for you. All I ask is that you provide the desire to hustle and I’ll provide the guidance via Craigslist in this book.

I know there are a lot of people promising you that you can make money on Craigslist if your purchase their software for five easy payments of $99.99. I’m not saying those products will not work, but I know for sure what I’m teaching will work. Not only have I proved these teachings myself, but while I’m writing this book I’m still using the same techniques to hustle and provide for my family. I was laid off from my job back in 2007 and placed on unemployment. I was married with three kids, and my wife was a full-time student at the time. My unemployment check was $205 a week and I didn’t receive any type of severance package. You’re talking about the chips being stacked up against a person! I applied for food stamps as well as went to a few agencies that provided temporary utility assistance.

That money only lasted for about two months, and I had been filling out applications all over town with no success. Before I knew it my unemployment was coming to an end and I was broke. Gas prices were averaging $3.50 a gallon and I was traveling 60 miles a day taking my wife and kids to and from school. I would pick up work here and there with my oldest brother who was starting his own moving company. He would set up the moving jobs, rent a moving truck, and I would help load and unload furniture for about $100 a day. That was good and all, but I was working with him only one to two days a week.

On various moving jobs, my brother would always get offered free furniture, electronics, household, and miscellaneous items from his clients. He was able to furnish his entire home with furniture from his moving jobs. The furniture was clean and in good shape, but his clients usually bought new furniture and didn’t need the old furniture anymore. After a while my brother started turning down the free furniture due to him not having the room to store everything. I wasn’t familiar with Craigslist at the time, but I had done a little business on EBay.

I didn’t think about getting that furniture from my brother and selling it until one day when he gave me a washing machine to sell for him. He got a newer washer from one of his clients and asked me if I wanted his old one. I didn’t need the washer, but he told me if I could sell it I could keep half of the money. Of course I didn’t turn that offer down being that I needed money at the time. I loaded up the washer in the back of my SUV and placed it in my garage. I made a few phone calls, but no one needed the washer. At that time, I remembered someone saying something about Craigslist, but I still hadn’t used the website personally. After being burned and losing money on EBay a few months back I was very leery about using a new online site to sell anything. As a last result I decided I would post the washer for sale on Craigslist.

I still was not familiar with Craigslist, but I knew from selling items on EBay, I would need to take pictures of the washer and provide a basic description. I borrowed my sister’s digital camera, took a couple of pictures, and posted the washer for sale that night on Craigslist. I received a phone call within two hours of me posting the ad, and the washer was out of my garage the next morning. I sold the washer for $125 in less than two hours! That night changed my whole outlook about Craigslist and the
