    INTRODUCTION

In the early 2000’s Americans were running strong. The houses were getting bigger, the cars were getting more expensive, the vacations were getting more elaborate, and it was all a set up for failure. Don’t get me wrong, I like these things as much as the next guy. The problem is most of us couldn’t afford them; at least not all of them. So, we overspent, overindulged, and borrowed lots of cheap money. When the wheels came off between 2008 and 2009 and unemployment and economic doubt hit us in the face, we panicked. We panicked because we were hit with the reality of lost income from lost jobs or we were hit with the reality that it could happen at any time.

This book is not an I told you so on your past spending habits. I didn’t tell you so, nor should I have. This book isn’t even about changing the way you spend your money. I don’t want to preach to you about your family budget. I don’t want to give you life lessons on saving money. And I don’t want to teach you to live below your means. There are plenty of books with all those intents. No, this book is meant to MAKE YOU MONEY, not save it.

You may be reading this because you did fall into the economic trap like many others and now you’re digging your way out. I hope for you that that isn’t the case, but if it is, that’s okay. I would rather you read it because you are motivated by something positive. I hope you have a goal in mind, or multiple goals, that have finally encouraged you to make some extra money. Regardless of why you are reading this, I have outlined a sure fire way of making extra money with the unneeded and unwanted items around your house.

We all have a closet, a shed, an attic, a basement, or maybe an actual pay-by-the-month storage unit full of unneeded, forgotten things we once considered treasures. I want to help you clean out these spaces and put cash in your pocket. This isn’t a get rich quick scheme or some convoluted process that only works in certain situations. I present several different methods for selling your unwanted stuff to fit your personality, community, and the type of stuff you have.

So, I hope you enjoy reading and learning about various methods of making money with little or no upfront cost. I have utilized all these methods through the years and still periodically take stock of my own possessions and use the same proven methods to put money back in my pockets. And now with a simple, easy to follow eBook, you can too.

    CHAPTER 1

    IS OVERBUYING YOUR GOAL?

I know what you’re thinking. I don’t have anything to sell. I need everything I have. And I can’t sell the stuff I don’t need because no one would buy it. Well, I’m here to tell you you’re wrong. You have a ton of stuff to sell and many ways to sell it. And in the right place, at the right price, everything will sell.

First let’s talk about not having anything to sell. We all do, weather we know it or not. I can say this as fact because it’s true. Some have far more extra things than others, but we all have stuff, stuff that can be sold, because we all overbuy. The most telling sign of this is the astonishing growth of one particular industry over the last thirty years.

According to the Self Storage Association, non-profit trade organizations for the storage unit industry, there were only 7,000 storage unit facilities in the United States. That’s less than 140 per state. But as of this writing, just twenty-eight years later, there are over 50,000 facilities with a combined rentable space exceeding 2.3 billion square feet! It has become a 22 billion dollar industry in the U.S. alone. If that doesn’t convince you, they also report than in 1995 one in seventeen households had a unit rented. Now, just seventeen years later, that statistic has increased 65% to one in ten households.

Why did such an obscure industry grow by leaps and bounds over the last couple of decades? Because we learned to buy more and more until we literally did not have space in our homes to keep it all. We resorted to renting space and supporting the building an empire of an industry to keep our buying habits going.

If you don’t pay a monthly fee for a storage unit, congratulations, but odds are you are still filling some hole with your extra stuff; like your garage. An article titled Garages Aren’t For Cars Anymore from TheFunTimesGuide.com stated that 82% of homes in the U.S. have at least a two-car garage, but out of the 82%, only 15% actually park their car inside. The rest are using them for storage!

Again, I don’t fault you if you have a storage unit or use your garage for storage instead of your car. I don’t fault you if you have some other hideaway packed full of past purchases. I like the new toys too. But I want you to be honest with yourself. You have extra stuff. You have stuff you don’t need. And you have stuff you don’t even want, but have forgotten about altogether.

In Chapter 2 we will cover how to analyze everything you own. But now is a good time to start thinking about all the places you have potential treasures hidden away. A storage unit or garages are the white elephants for extra stuff. But most of us, even those with a paid space and a car parked outside, also have closets, attics, or under-the-bed storage totes. It’s these
