    Chapter 1

Annabel Wells sat on the couch in the living room of the dragons’ home, holding hot cocoa in her hands and pretending to watch television. Her hand pressed hard against the ceramic and felt the heat radiating from within. She never thought she’d feel coldness in their house.

A remote control landed on the couch next to her, bouncing twice before settling on the cushion. You find something for us to watch, Sera said as she lounged on the nearby chair, her legs dangling over the arm rest. I think I’ve seen everything possible on television.

Annabel nodded. She wasn’t sure what they watched a few minutes ago and certainly not on what else was available. Her thoughts kept wandering back to Crispin and the other dragons. In particular, she wondered what would happen after they tracked down the Unseen in their hidden location.

Crispin hadn’t explained to her the details before he left with two other dragons named Devon and Porter to discover more information about the Unseen. Things were far more serious than he wanted to let on if he needed to bring in some other dragons from around the world to help. It made her stomach churn thinking about what might be happening out there. He could be pinned against a wall with an Unseen tormenting him.

Sera’s cell phone rang and vibrated from its position on the nearby coffee table causing Annabel to jump. Without a word, Sera reached over and pulled it to her ear. She asked excitedly, Hello? Nodding her head twice, she handed the phone to Annabel. It’s Crispin.

Annabel raised the phone to her ear. She knew Sera wanted to hear Henry on the other side but at least for Annabel it was a relief knowing Crispin was still safe. Or at least able to talk with her. Hey. How’s it going? What have you found out? Are you safe?

One question at a time, he said. We’re staked out next to the warehouse to see if any of the Unseen come here. We’ll stop them from whatever they have planned.

She nodded her head. Before Crispin left with the others, he told her Mark had returned and was attempting to track down what was occurring with the Unseen. She wasn’t entirely sure how he came back or what the Unseen had to do with it, but she did know it had something to do with her. She didn’t want to know all the details. They never made her feel safer.

Have you see June around there? She might know something. June was Annabel’s former roommate who ended up being a Watcher. A Watcher was a being in charge of maintaining the balance between knights and dragons. They had an upper hand if she was still around.

Last time they saw June, she changed Sera back into a regular dragon as opposed to the giant form she’d been forced into. Nuri, a dark knight, had also been changed back into his normal form yet June took him away with her. It solved one problem – at least for now.

Not here. We’ve been looking for Unseen coming around here. Perhaps if we get one alone, we can track it down to where the rest are. Crispin’s end of the phone suddenly went silent.

Crispin? Are you there? Annabel didn’t like this. He never hung up abruptly on her and she doubted it didn’t have something to do the Unseen. They might be attacking the dragons at this very moment with the full extent of their power.

She hung up the phone and dropped it back on the coffee table. We have to go, she said to Sera as she made her way to the door. Her hand grabbed her coat hanging from a hook. She pushed her arm around blindly until it went into the sleeve.

What happened? Sera stood next to Annabel and grabbed her coat as well.

His phone went dead. The two women looked at each other, both knowing that action was entirely unlike Crispin.

As Annabel placed her hand on the door, the phone started ringing once again on the table. The two women looked at it briefly before Annabel nearly climbed her way over the back of the couch to grab it. She pressed the button quickly and asked, Hello? Hello Crispin? Are you there?

Sorry about that. We thought we saw something and…well, we did. How long do you think it would take for you and Sera to get ready? Crispin seemed hesitant on the other side as he spoke.

We’re almost out the door. I thought something happened to you. Annabel shared a look with Sera. The other woman shifted uncomfortably on her feet in anticipation of what was being said.

Crispin gave a slight laugh. We’re three dragons. We can handle some Unseen.

Be careful. Don’t do anything stupid.

We’ll be back at the house in a few minutes. We can talk about everything we found out over the past hour. I really want you to trust me on this and stay inside. Do not leave the house under any circumstances until we get there.

Annabel didn’t like the way this conversation was heading. There were probably Unseen who wanted to kill her because she was marked stationed outside the door. There were two large scars on her body – one on her arm and the other on her leg – from where the Unseen already attacked her. Everywhere she went, she knew they were capable of finding her easily.

    I won’t.

See you in a few. Crispin hung up on her once more.
