Annabel Wells finds herself in a difficult position: not only is she mated with the dragon Crispin but she finds herself married to the knight Mark as well. Neither one wants to let her go. Seeking help, she and Crispin head off to find some of the dragon elders who may help her break from her contract. Mark decides to use his connections with the Order to force Crispin into returning his wife. Their home, meanwhile, has drawn the attention of knights. It's up to Henry, Sera, and Jules to keep their sworn enemies from continually attacking them.

After seeking help from an old friend, Crispin finds himself being held prisoner against his will by his own kind. His loyalty is tested as those he thought he could always trust are now against him. Annabel and the others dragons are searching throughout the city, hoping to find some trace of where he went. She turns to Mark, believing he knows something about Crispin’s disappearance. When he proves to be as knowledgeable as her, they devise a new plan to bring back Crispin even if it is the last thing Mark wants to do. War looms as the knights and dragons join forces. Her sole purpose is to find Crispin and release him from whatever grasps the knights have him in. Mark’s plan is to make her fall for him again. He knows this time alone will be the perfect time. A shift in power is occurring in both the dragon and knight world. All of the final plans have been made. The only thing left to do is act. A giant red dragon threatens the city, breathing fire upon buildings and destroying them swiftly. Crispin and the others are unsure how to deal with this problems. True dragons haven't been seen in ages. They'll need to concentrate their efforts if they want to get rid of it. A familiar face is also looking for the dragons. When she meets with them, neither side knows how to react to her return.

Dark days loom for the dragons. Crispin and the others are forced into turning to his family for support while the dragons and knights continue to pursue them. With so many against him, it seems nearly impossible to restore his name. Mandy is keeping watch over the knights in the Order, making sure they are capable of handling the renegade forces. When she notices a crowd gathering at Grand Rode, she isn't quite prepared for what's about to happen. No one is safe.

The dragons return and resume their efforts to keep the Unseen menace from gaining a stronghold on the city. As they reevaluate their plans, a new Unseen in the area begins catching their attention. It doesn't operate according to the way these creatures have for centuries. One option which presents itself is this Unseen is the large one which Lysander released earlier. If it is, they are in for a considerable amount of trouble. When the dragons and Annabel confront the creature, they find it hasn't returned alone.

The Order has been broken. The dragon elders have seized control over their kind. Together, they seem nearly unstoppable and a dangerous foe for anyone to have. Annabel rushes into the knight retreat, knowing Crispin is still alive. She plans to make it to him before anything happens to him. She, Henry, Mark, and Sera enter and make their way through the jumbled mess of dragons and knights – each one intent on stopping the other. Darkness lurks in the shadows, waiting for its chance to seek revenge on those who imprisoned it once before. When everyone is against them, where can they turn for help?

Crispin and the other dragons discover the Unseen are rising in numbers throughout the city. They are trying to determine the best way to combat their foes. Henry and Jules leave with Mandy. She believes the knights want to attack the dragon hatchery and kill the hatchlings. They're the only ones who can save the future dragons.

Henry and Jules are trying to find ways in which to stop the knights from attacking the hatchery. The only help they have is Mandy. Jules believes she is firmly on their side but Henry is less than trusting. She needs to prove herself if she wants them to take her seriously. Annabel and Crispin discover why the Unseen have been gathering in greater forces throughout the city - and it's not pleasant. They have to stop the Unseen at any cost to make sure the world is safe. Knights are careful, calculating people - and the bane of dragons. Secrets of Steel Everyone has secrets they keep from the others - intentional or not. A relaxing trip upstate turns into a struggle of Crispin versus a trained knight. As Annabel watched, Mark comes to the rescue and saves him. His own conscious plagues him with the thought of betraying the knighthood. Fire Blast When old foes show up once more, the dragons much split their time between attacking the Unseen and defending themselves against the knights. Crispin believes it is best to keep Annabel from the fight and urges her to stay away. When her father shows up, new people begin shining in a different light. Molten Steel The worse fear for a knight is for his daughter to be associated with dragons. This fear drives Annabel's father into dueling Crispin. Mark acts upon a contract drawn up years ago which states Annabel is to become her wife. Her heart is tested between duty and love.

Sometimes, even four dragons aren't enough. Frozen Flames A new Unseen, creature of darkness, roams the city. As the dragons attack it in their usual fashion, they soon find themselves in deeper than they expected. This creature dodges their attacks and winds up testing the strength of the group. Draco Ex Machina With two members of their team gone, the dragons must call upon the help of the elder dragons. When Thane arrives, he seems more of a liability than a help. The elder dragons show up and help restore order to the group once more - with a warning. Circle of Flames The large Unseen continues attacking those within the city, imitating them to get its way. It will only be through the concentrated efforts of the entire team that they'll get this creature into a prison. If they fail, the entire city will fall.

In a desperate attempt to save the hatchlings from Lysander and his band of knights, Henry and Jules rush into the hatchery. Once inside, they discover Lysander plans on devising his own way of coming into the building which puts everyone inside in danger. Crispin, Annabel, Sera, and Devon rush to help the hatchlings as well since they haven't received news from their friends in a while. They discover a surprising turn of events which will change the way dragons and knights interact with one another.
