Chapter 1
Clear liquid dripped from the vial onto the petri dish below; small ripples being created with every splatter. A blonde haired woman walked over; her face hidden by a surgical mask worn over the entire area. Her eyes peeped through the small slits as she gingerly picked up the small dish which lay upon the steel table.
Advancing slowly, she made her way towards the small creature suspended in a glass container with bright yellow liquid surrounding it. Her hand reached out and began unscrewing the top, exposing the liquid to the air. A whiff of blue smoke plumed upwards.
The creature inside moved slightly; its thick fur releasing bubbles with every twitch. The woman waited until the face turned upwards before depositing the contents of the petri dish into the water. The two liquids merged into one another and changed the color from yellow to a pale red. The creature continued moving throughout the process.
Specimen sixty four is alert. Seems to be responding to outside stimulants well,
the woman said aloud, her voice muffled through the mask.
A small machine in the back clicked, recording every notation she made. A sheet of paper trailed onto the floor with strange markings upon it. The woman picked the paper and walked with it to the container she examined earlier.
The creature inside moved about with increased alertness, seeming to grow larger with every passing moment. A small hand pressed itself against the glass.
The woman looked at the hand closer, removing the mask from her face as she placed herself close to it. What are you doing?
she asked aloud. Her finger pressed against the tiny hand.
The creature turned towards her and opened its eyes brightly. The dark, shiny eyes pierced into hers and caused her to take a few steps backwards. No, no. This isn’t supposed to happen. You’re not supposed to be moving,
she said with fear in her voice. She stumbled back; her hand hit against the containers on the table behind her and shattered abruptly.
Liquid hissed as it hit the ground, burning small holes into the ground and metallic table. The machine behind her started clicking faster, the results pouring out onto the floor. She bit her lip, shaking her head as she continued staring at the creature.
As much as she wanted to look away, she couldn’t. The mesmerizing eyes drew her attention regardless of where she tried escaping. Her feet hit against the legs of the metallic table and she felt liquid burn her hand slightly. She didn’t pull back her hand until it had been sufficiently scarred.
A strange voice said through the stillness, Come.
The woman stared back at the creature. Part of her knew it was talking but she didn’t see the mouth moving. There was no possible way for it to talk. This creature was only designed to be an embryonic creature instead of anything capable of intelligent thought.
She shook her head. No.
A strong pain ran through her head, causing her to pound against her temples to keep from toppling onto the ground. She dropped to her knees as she tried regaining control over her mind. The constant throbbing forced her to shut down her senses to isolate the threat.
Come,
it reiterated once more, this time seemingly louder than before. Its voice scratched against the back of her mind as if implanting itself deep into her being.
The woman struggled against herself; crawling on her hands and knees towards the strange creature remaining in the container. Her fingernails dug into the hard metallic ground in an effort to keep herself moving forward. She cried as she tried stopping herself. All of her years of research in the effort to create new sustainable life hadn’t prepared her for this outcome.
Her hand hit against the container, the cool liquid inside feeling nice against her palm. What do you want?
If she reasoned with it, maybe she’d get it to realize what was happening was wrong. There was always a chance it’d let go of her. She needed to plea with it for her life.
The creature sent a ripple of energy through the room, knocking into her head hard. I need you. Give me you.
It forced itself through her mind harder and caused her to rise back onto her feet.
She fought against the control; her hands shaking as she brought them towards the top of the container. As she touched it, she felt her hand twisting and releasing the top which captured it. Her hands moved backwards every so often but she soon found herself holding the top in her bare hands.
The creature raised its hand, pulling itself out the container with the liquid dripping from its dark fur. Its fur covered hand grabbed onto hers; grabbing tightly and wrapping its fingers around her. Once it made it outside of the container, it began growing larger. Its hands changed into the size of the woman’s – its entire body growing with each step.
She stared in horror as it continued getting larger and larger. "You…you weren’t supposed
