    Chapter 1

Annabel Wells took a step back from Mark Royal and Crispin, desperately needing the moment to recollect herself. Everything swirled around her as she tried taking in all this new information. Everything she knew had changed less than a day before – whether she liked it or not. Running her fingers through her brown hair, she felt overwhelmed.

There should be a simpler way for her to break down this situation. She would need to think of it in very basic terms to understand what was happening. It always helped when she dealt with complicated problems. All she needed to focus on was the things she absolutely knew for sure.

The best place to start was with Crispin. He was a dragon, defender for the human race against the terrible darkness known as the Unseen. Night after night he protected the world, risking his life to fight against these creatures. He definitely saved her life many times and she loved him. Last night, she agreed to become his mate – the dragon equivalent of his wife. It was that last statement which made her stomach churn.

While she was becoming his mate, it seemed Mark already made her into his wife. Had he been normal, this wouldn't be a problem. As her luck held it, he was a knight and sworn enemy of the dragons. Thinking about her situation made her feel sick. She couldn't imagine what would possibly possess him into tricking her to this contract. There had to be a loop hole. Anything.

You have to get out of here right now, Mark said, maintaining his stance. His hand reached towards Annabel once more, urging her to come forward. This was the only way he could think of to make sure she was safe. He cast a hard glance at Crispin, daring him with his eyes to come closer. It took every ounce of determination to appear at their home and now that he was here, he planned on seeing his plans through.

Placing himself in front of her, Crispin said, She's not going anywhere. She's my mate. You can find yourself someone else to play games with. Had Mark appeared the day before claiming to be married to her, a duel would already be taking place in the house. The only reason one wasn't occurring right now was because Crispin was sore from the earlier one against Annabel's father. Even so, he would defend her with his dying breath if need be. There was no chance of Mark leaving the house with her.

Mark shook his head, knowing there was no use attempting to reason with this creature. He didn't even see why there was any argument going on. Are you going to try stopping me? I'd like to see that. He cocked his head slightly, daring Crispin to attack him. A portion of him already knew the dragon never would. The contract was in his hands, signed and sealed by her father. There was no denying Annabel was his wife. He was the only one who could save her from being attacked by other knights coming for the dragons. This was for her safety.

Scared? Crispin moved closer, hiding his limp as best he could. It seemed he wouldn't have the luxury of time to heal. Out the corner of his eye, he also saw Henry moving closer towards Mark as well. At least he wouldn't have to attack him alone. There was always positives to living in a house filled with dragons.

Annabel could sense the direction this conversation was headed. Flashbacks from the night before raced through her mind; her father and Crispin dueling one another to the death inside a fiery ring. Her heart couldn’t take the stress from knowing there was a chance Crispin could die.

Without thinking, she rushed forward and placed herself between Crispin and Mark; her hand pressed firmly against each chest to stop them. She didn't know what else she could do in this situation. No, she said firmly, No, I'm not letting either one of you do this. It's not worth it. While she didn't care nearly as much for Mark as Crispin, there was still a lingering thought of him in the back of her mind. It wouldn't let her intentionally see him harmed.

The two men stopped advancing towards each other, their attention still drawn upon the other. Each one thought the same. The only solution would be to fight one another for her. Neither one of them would ever think of willingly letting the other be with her without a fight. The entire building would have gone up in smoke and flames.

There has to be a way to fix this. I'm sure this can't be the first time something wrong happened in a mating. Someone would know the solution,Annabel said dropping her hands and moving closer to Crispin, I'm sure there's someone we can talk to and fix this. Isn't there like a dragon council or something? She hoped she guessed right. In every paranormal movie she ever saw there were always councils who presided over things. It would only make sense for this to exist in the real world.

Crispin broke his stare of Mark and looked at Annabel. He could tell she was desperately seeking some way to avoid a confrontation. Sighing, he knew she depended on him now more than ever. His petty fight with Mark for now needed to remain non-physical. When he recovered, it would be a different story. There's only one problem with that. We don't have a council.

She laughed nervously. Really? The one thing I thought all of you crazy people had in common. I mean, they have the Order, she said pointing at Mark, So I know who to talk to on their side. Who do you have? There had to be someone.

He looked at her oddly. From her tone of voice, she was close to bursting into tears. He could even see her eyes slightly beginning to water. This scenario must be getting to her. We really don't. There are a few elders I can get in touch with and then they can help us sort everything. You shouldn't have to be with someone who cheated you to go with him. You should be with the person who makes you happy. He lifted his gaze and settled it back on Mark. It certainly
