About this ebook

After seeking help from an old friend, Crispin finds himself being held prisoner against his will by his own kind. His loyalty is tested as those he thought he could always trust are now against him.

Annabel and the others dragons are searching throughout the city, hoping to find some trace of where he went. She turns to Mark, believing he knows something about Crispin’s disappearance. When he proves to be as knowledgeable as her, they devise a new plan to bring back Crispin even if it is the last thing Mark wants to do.

War looms as the knights and dragons join forces. It’s only a matter of time now before their plan is ignited.

    Chapter 1

Turning her key and opening the door to her apartment, Annabel Wells stepped inside only to be immediately greeted by her roommate June screaming, Congratulations!

Screaming herself out of surprise, Annabel took a few steps backwards and grabbed onto the wall to stop herself from falling. What was that for? She held her hand to her chest, feeling her heart racing. She hoped this wasn’t the start of a heart attack. She exhaled, shaking her head as she dropped her purse onto the nearby couch.

Oh come on. You ran out of here, all nervous, stayed away for a few days...do I really need to beg to see it? June moved closer towards Annabel, her eyes scanning down to her left hand.

Annabel held up her hand, completely forgetting about what happened since the last time she saw June. They had just managed to get the ring out of the drain when Annabel left to see what was happening with Crispin. She found him involved in a duel with her father – the last duel before her father died.

It was also earlier that night when Mark Royal tricked her into honoring the marriage contract. According to the standards set in practice, she married him first. She didn't want to dwell on that for now.

June grabbed her hand and pulled her over to the couch. Drinks were already set and a box of cookies opened. Okay, tell me everything. How did it happen? Was it romantic and sweet? She pleaded with her eyes for as much information as Annabel would be willing to give. The excitement remained evident on her face the entire time.

Dropping herself onto the couch, Annabel realized if she tried to start explaining everything as it actually happened, it would take a long time to talk about it. She would probably still be here tomorrow night as June tried understanding it all. It didn’t help Annabel didn’t understand it herself.

He did. Um, Annabel said thinking of the perfect lie, He got down on one knee and under the moonlight he asked me if I wanted to marry him. I said yes. She held up her hand as if showing proof that it actually happened. This was not actually how a dragon mated with one another. A small tattoo would appear on the side of her hip and his. The mark on her disappeared though when the dragon elders ruled that her marriage to Crispin was null.

June poured them each a drink, making sure not to spill any on the coffee table. She handed Annabel a glass and raised hers as well. I want to be the first person to offer a toast to the new...what's his last name? She paused with her drink in midair.

Uh, Annabel stalled again, Knight. She couldn't believe she said that word to use as his last name. It was the only thing on her mind right now. If Crispin knew she chose it as his fake last name, he would be furious. Dragons, which he was, were the sworn enemies of the knights. Even right now, they were dealing with the threat of knights coming into the city to kill them. If June mentioned it later, Annabel would tell Crispin to play along.

To the new Mrs. Knight! June clinked her glass against Annabel's and brought the drink to her lips.

Annabel drank a few sips but her mind was preoccupied instead of being focused on their celebration. She finally came home after waiting two days for Crispin to come back from Rowen's. Neither Jules, Henry, nor Sera heard from him since he left but they all tried playing it off. Every time she brought up the question of where he was, they said he was probably on his way back or dealing with something else over there.

The reason he left earlier was to try finding from Rowan something to help her since she was attacked by the Unseen. Fortunately for her, it didn't kill her. Then again, she wasn't attacked by a real Unseen. The creature which came after her moved much faster; rejoining the pieces of dark material knocked from it in record time as opposed to a regular one. It also seemed to leave a lesser trail of energy. While none of them felt they could positively identify it, for now, it was known as the fake Unseen among them.

Mark seemed upset when you left earlier. Had you promised him some money or what for helping pull the ring out of the sink? I couldn't remember but I gave him a five. June placed her glass down on the table and poured her some more. She picked up a cookie and brought it to her mouth as well.

That snapped Annabel out of her thoughts. Mark was not only her husband, at least on paper, but he was a knight as well. The mention of his name made her nervous. Anytime he became involved, it always meant trouble.

Why? Annabel placed her mostly filled glass on the table as well. She wanted to hear more about what happened with Mark. It might be possible for her to learn about what exactly went on when she left to deal with Crispin. Many things happened that night she wished she could forget but this was something important she needed to learn about. Hopefully June could see between her question and reveal more information.

June shrugged. I thought five would be enough. I mean, I wasn't going to pay him twenty dollars for just pulling out a ring. He did get dinner out of it as well.

No, I mean, why was he upset? She leaned back in her seat, crossing her arms as she waited to hear the answer. Anything would help give her clues as to who Mark even was. All she knew about him was that he was a knight and knew her father. Other than that, she felt clueless. He talked about them meeting earlier but that seemed to be only something he remembered. She certainly didn't know who he was.

I don't know. He's probably just upset since I broke up with him or whatever. She placed her glass on the table
