Her 'handler' is a clean-cut fellow agent who goes only by "Byron". To fool the cartels, Carrie must change her hair, her style, and gain some serious weight. But nothing is as simple as it seems, and as Carrie and Byron's relationship heats up, so does the cartel's pursuit of their prey.

Carrie’s green eyes scanned the document; her heart turning to ice. She tucked an errant strand of blonde hair behind her ear and looked up.

Is this for real? She asked.

Chief Rodriguez nodded. It’s all real, Carrie. We picked it up this morning from one of our wiretaps on the cartel’s hitmen.

Carrie Sartore had seen more than her share since joining the DEA three years ago. A pretty girl, without any known law enforcement connections, she was quickly tagged as the go-to girl for undercover work. She had first been assigned easy jobs. Making small buys from low level dealers. But she was good, an expert and earning the trust of people who rarely trusted. And so she climbed the ladder.

Soon, she found herself assigned to the Dallas office, part of an elite task force up together to staunch the flow of cocaine coming over the border. Carrie proved not only adept, but fearless as she began to pose not as a buyer, but as a dealer, making buys worth upwards of $10,000. It was dangerous work, in a field where few women ever worked. But Carrie was a woman whose dedication was absolute. She committed totally to her persona. Sometimes, even she herself lost sight of whether she was Carrie the DEA agent playing a drug dealer, and when she Carrie, the mid-level dealer.

Even Carrie’s superiors knew she wasn’t out there playing by the book. She kept some of the things she did off the books, and they never asked. But after months of infiltration and evidence collection, the DEA made their move, rolling up dozens of Dallas area dealers and movers. But as the first convictions came through, and the dust settled, there was one person who the cartels notices hadn’t been sentenced and convicted, and who hadn’t shown back up on the streets—Carrie Sartore. And the cartels had her name. And her pictures. And now, if the wiretaps were to be belived—they had marked her for death.

So, what do I do now? I can’t just sit around when an international drug cartel has marked me for assassination! Carrie exclaimed; fear cracking through her façade of tough indignation.

I know your nature Carrie. You’re a hard charger, you can’t sit still. Your attitude is why the cartels are taking such a risk by going after you specifically. You have to back off of this one. Let the other DEA agents take these guys. You can’t pursue them when they are out there, targeting you.

Carrie’s instincts cried out in protest, as the content of the transcript settled over her psyche like a fog.

No. She said, her teeth clenching instinctively. I’m not going to go to the fucking beach while some other agent bumbles through trying to shut down these drug cartel killers.

Chief Rodriguez was no stranger to agents like Carrie. They didn’t become hotshot DEA agents by being passive in the face of a challenge. But the people after Carrie weren’t inner city crack dealers, or suburban pot pushers. This organization was a cash-rich, highly sophisticated, international drug cartel. And Carrie had proven herself to be a singularly tough thorn in their side. This cartel was as ruthless as it was efficient. If the most recent wiretaps were correct; the cartel bosses were going to solve their problem the fastest way possible: Kill Special Agent Carrie Sartore.

Carrie. Chief Rodriguez changed his tone to ‘concerned father’; even the most
