    Suspicions (Story #2)

    ONE

Rebecca Marin, seventeen, feels changed somehow as she takes Nico home and distractedly goes through the oft-repeated and rote routine of changing him out of his wet beach things, bathing and toileting him, and changing him into dry clothes.  As much as she hates to admit this to herself, she can’t put Danny Cohen out of her mind.

The boy she met on the beach today was enough to take her mind off the fact that her sister passed away tragically at the beginning of the summer, enough to distract her from the heartbreak of the fact that her parents no longer have the time or energy to care for their cerebral-palsied son and so are paying Rebecca to nanny six-year-old Nico until school starts.  Not that Rebecca minds; she loves her brother with all her heart and soul.  But it’s the principle of the matter.

Now, though, the heaviness in her has been reprieved somewhat, and it’s all due to Danny Cohen.  Olivia’s type, she reminds herself.  Wild.  Too old.  Not for me.  But the hammering of her heart and the skitter of heat along her skin whenever she thinks of him seem to outweigh the logical arguments of her mind.  She spends a quiet Sunday evening with her parents and Nico, watching TV.

Looks like a storm coming out there, Jenner remarks, casting his eyes toward the family room windows.

Rebecca follows his gaze.  The sky is already gray, though it’s too early in the evening for it to get dark.  Monstrous cloud banks flank the horizon, and everything outdoors has a rather thick, hazy appearance.

Carole, crocheting in the corner with her feet propped on an ottoman, nods her agreement.  Maybe the storm will break this heat spell, she suggests.

It is stifling out there, Rebecca puts in.  By this point, Nico is the only one of them whose eyes are still riveted to the moving images on the TV screen.

Carole looks at Rebecca, and Rebecca thinks how gaunt and pale this summer has turned her usually-lovely mother.  Carole’s light-olive skin tone, a match to Rebecca’s own complexion, is pasty; her cheekbones are hollow and drawn.  Even her thick hair hangs limp around her shoulders, which are exposed
