    Facing the Truth (Story #3)

    ONE

Curled into fetal position on her bed in the dark, seventeen-year-old Rebecca Marin replays the events of the evening in her mind: the long, lingering kiss with Danny Cohen; the voice of Danny’s brother Adam cutting through the air, insisting that they stop it; Adam’s irrational behavior; the fear in his eyes when Rebecca confirmed Adam’s suspicions by admitting that she was Olivia Marin’s sister; the macabre hollowness in his voice when he said, She’s gone.  Olivia’s gone.

Adam knows something!  Rebecca sits up straight on the mattress, sweating in spite of the central air conditioning.  No one would have acted that way over the death of someone he didn’t know.  Everything with Olivia was always a puzzle, and now it continues, even beyond her death.

She isn’t convinced by what Danny told her about Adam, that he’s struggled with drugs and depression since high school, and that he isn’t often himself.  That may explain some of the incoherence, but it doesn’t explain the haunted look in Adam’s eyes, the fear in his voice.  Adam knows something about Olivia.

Oh, Olivia! Rebecca thinks.  Why did you have to do everything your own way?  Why did you have to be such a mystery?  Why are you a mystery to your own family, even now?  How is it fair that someone like Adam Cohen can know things about you that the rest of us don’t—Adam Cohen, who’s lived in Harper Falls for only a few short months?

The tears come now, hot and stinging, and Rebecca hadn’t expected them.  She lies down, burying her face in the hollow of her pillow.  The salty warmth stings her skin.  Is this how it always has to be?  Just as soon as she thought she was ready to start living again, just as soon as she truly began the healing process following her sister’s death in June, just as soon as she began seeing her friends again and met Danny on the beach and things were looking up—this has to happen.

    In spite
