    Chapter One

AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGMENT, I opened the creaky door and let him in. I wasn’t happy, so I didn’t even give him the courtesy of a wave. I was mad. I had the right to be mad, because yet again it appeared that he was lying to me.

When he came in the room, he took his hand and brushed it over his scalp and ran his fingers through his hair. He was nervous. I could easily see that. If he was telling the truth, why did he have to be so nervous?

He took a seat on the nice, new, pleather couch that he bought me. I looked into his eyes and saw worry. What was he worried about? Was he worried that I was going to leave him? Or, was he worried about the fact that I would discover the truth about what happened? I still gave him a chance and let him tell his story.

He opened his quivering mouth and began to lay out the facts. I’ve been accused of stealing money. I was arrested recently for that.

Yes, we’ve covered that I barked impatiently. I wanted to know more.

He exhaled a deep breath and continued his story. Here’s what happened. When my company was considering a merger, they had to see how much money they had available to buy out the other company. That’s what happens when a merger kicks in. One company pays a ton of money to buy out the other company and merge...

Mm hmm I interrupted as he was speaking.

He took his chubby thumbnail and scratched his slightly whiskery chin. When the company looked into it, they noticed a somewhat clever scam that someone put into place. The embezzler – whoever it was – was making withdrawals, and putting the money back in the same day – that way when the accountants checked the books in the morning, everything balanced.

I didn’t know if he was trying to confuse me, but I was confused. I didn’t understand how someone could take money out of the account and nobody would notice. How did the accountants not notice the money was missing during the day? That doesn’t make sense to me.

He cleared his throat and continued his explanation. Our company policy says that the account balances are to be checked every single day in the morning. The accountants followed policy by doing that. Sure, they could have checked the accounts more often, but they weren’t required to do so. They, in essence, were doing the bare minimum. But, that’s just how it often is in this country when it comes to service and follow through.

I kept myself quiet and listened. I’ll admit that I was a bit skeptical that nobody checked the books more than once per day. So, if nobody checked the books more than once per day, and the money was returned daily, how was the theft discovered?

    He laughed
