    Incorrect PIN.

    The ATM flashed the message and spit out my card.

    That was weird. I hadn’t changed my PIN between last week and today. I didn’t even know how. I tried again, but got the same error message. I didn’t dare try a third time, fearing the ATM would eat my card.

    Damn technology. With a sigh, I went into the bank building. Getting to the bottom of this would require talking to a real live person.

    My card’s not working, I said. It says my PIN’s wrong.

    The teller tapped on her keyboard. The wait felt like forever.

    Hm. You changed your PIN a few days ago and withdrew most of your money.

    Alarm bells rang in my head.

    Wait, what’s my balance? I asked.

    Ten dollars and eighty-three cents.

    What? That can’t be. I know I have around eight hundred dollars in there. I tried to take a deep breath, but my lungs wouldn’t cooperate.

    Maybe you forgot you took it out?

    How does anyone forget eight hundred dollars? I didn’t take it out. You have to believe me.

    The teller apologized and said someone might have stolen my Social Security Number and other personal information to hijack my account. Classic identity theft situation, she said. Fixing the problem would take a few weeks maybe even months, to investigate.
