Running Hot and Cold - Kiki Wellington

The things I did for money.

I'm not saying it was a terrible job, but it just wasn't for me.

Who am I kidding? I hated that job. I only took the job at the frozen food company to make money while I worked on my doctorate in psychology and human sexuality. I was on track to receive a research position at my university—which would have meant that my tuition was completely covered—but that fell through. So I needed to get a job, any job, that would allow me to pay for my sexology studies and support myself. It wasn't my dream job—my ultimate goal was to become a sex therapist—but it did pay the bills.

I mostly did administrative work at that job, but once a month, I got to unchain myself from my desk to work on the company's inventory for about a week. When I answered the phone that morning, I was convinced that Amy was calling from her cell phone to bitch at me for something or another—that's what she thinks management is supposed to do—so I was pleasantly surprised when it was actually her husband on the other end of the phone.

How on earth that woman got someone to marry her is a mystery to me, but a mystery for another day.

Is this Angela? he asked me.

Yes, this is Angela, I said, wondering what was going on.

Hi, Angela, this is Mark—Amy's husband. I'm just calling to let you know that my wife won't be in this week. She's in the hospital with pneumonia.

    "Pneumonia? Oh, my
