“Anyway, please keep my card with you in case you need my cab,” said the cab driver, and put a card in her hand.

Sohini opened her purse to give him the money. She paid him and kept his card in her purse. The cab driver started his cab and moved away.

For a second she thought of throwing that card away, but she once again looked at the card and put it back in her purse. She had read the name ‘Michael Smith’ and the phone number on the card.

    Chapter One: Taxi Ride

It was a sunny morning and the traffic on that road was as usual very busy. Sohini had been standing at the curb for about fifteen minutes, trying to stop taxis. Most of the taxis went past her, carrying their passengers. She had to find a cab as quickly as possible.

She looked at a cab coming in her direction. She raised her hand and the cab stopped in front of her, with a screech. The taxi driver was a handsome American. He lowered the window glass and smiled at her. Sohini began to compose herself.

The driver said very politely, Yes Miss, where would you want to go?

Sohini gave him the name of her college and occupied the back seat. She wanted to give him the directions about the way to her college, but the driver already knew the place.

You don’t worry, Miss, I know the place. Just tell me the name of your department and we will be there in no time, said the driver very politely.

Sohini told him about her department and took a sigh of relief. She was pleased that she would be able to reach in time.

After about twenty five minutes, the taxi stopped in front of Sohini’s department. The driver quickly came out and opened the door for her.

At what time will your class be over, Miss? I can come back to pick you if you like, said the driver with a bright smile.

No thank you. I will manage, said Sohini, returning his smile.

Miss, the place whence you had hired my cab is not favored by the taxi drivers in the evening. And secondly there is no bus in the evening to take you there. The road repair work is going on, that is why the traffic is made one-way only in the evening. You may find it quite difficult, the cab driver tried to explain.

Sohini smiled and said, Thank you very much, but I am used to facing difficulty. I can manage. Thank you once again.

Anyway, please keep my card with you in case you need my cab, said the cab driver, and put a card in her hand.

    Chapter Two: Arrangement

Only a week before, Sohini had arrived in the United States. The son of her father’s friend lived in that town. His name was Rajiv. Sohini had been sent there to live with Rajiv and his family.

She had phoned her parents and they seemed to be very pleased that Sohini
