An Evening at the Indian Coffee House:

    Kolkata-

    Around 7.30:

    And this was my fifth cup;

Dada, here is your coffee. said Soumen. (The waiter)

I was still sitting with my head on the table.

Soumen repeated, Your coffee. a short pause, Are you ok?

Yes I am ok. I knew it. I shouldn’t have loved her. I answered.

    Life teaches us everything.

    What? Said Soumen.

Wait Dada, don’t come to hasty conclusions.

Dada, come and join me, I will treat you to a coffee I said.

Sorry, I have got work. Thank you so much for the offer. he answered.

Am I not like your own son? I asked.

Yes you are, but my manager won’t understand that. Soumen said.

I need to talk to you, and tell you something today. Please spare me some time. I feel you might understand me. I insisted.

Ok, give me some time. I will join you in a few minutes. In the meantime let me bring you another cup, as this one is not hot anymore, Soumen said.

    After a few minutes;

    Here is your coffee.

Thank you, for giving me some of your time.

    That is ok, tell me.

Soumen da, it was a bright sunny day, in the month of July, 2007.

    DAY ONE

I have been using the same boring route for the last six months on the metro. I am getting fed up of this monotonous life, the same people, the heat and crowd of Kolkata. Amidst all this, a feeling came to me one day when I was running after getting down from the auto to go to the ticket counter at the metro station; Samarth today is your day.

Today something good will happen to me. What a joke!!! How can I expect something good? My ‘evil incarnated on earth’ manager won’t let that happen. Even if something good is destined; his presence in my life will transform that to some evil.

She was in the queue just in front of me. I couldn’t see her face though..

Both of us boarded the same train and co incidentally the same coach. I was exactly behind her but didn’t try to see her face as it was quite crowded. From her back I was sure she would be a beauty. She was in a formal blue shirt and matching trousers with her long and beautiful hair tied neatly. Couldn’t guess her age though, seemed a very young beautiful girl might be joining her MBA classes, might be her first day in college. We took our seats and intentionally I sat just opposite to her. And man I got bowled out, at very first glance. Her face was something you could look at for hours, had an unusual attraction with beautiful mild eyes and lips with no makeup. She seemed naturally gorgeous. And just like an idiot I was staring at her as if there was no one else in the compartment. I felt as if she didn’t mind or might be she had already faced such stupid behaviour by men many a times.

Stations were passing and I was keeping my fingers crossed that we would get down at the same station. I was laughing at myself. As if I had the courage to talk to her even if we got down at the same station! To my delight my prayers came true; we got down at the same station. I ran like an idiot just to keep-up with her and to check out through which gate she went out.

    DAY TWO

The next Saturday morning was again the same old routine. But I had a feeling; that I might get to see her again at the station. I woke up a bit late and had to run to catch the train, rather had to run so that I didn’t miss out the opportunity to see her. Maa kept shouting at me as I didn’t have my breakfast, which I never miss out at any cost but that day I had no other option as I could not afford to miss her.

I couldn’t believe my luck as I again met her at the platform. Rather she was a bit late that day. I thanked God as I would have missed out having a glimpse of her that day otherwise. I kept staring at her as she was walking to the platform; and to my surprise she glanced at me that day.

    DAY THREE

It was probably the first Sunday morning that I have ever hated and the reason was obvious. I wouldn’t be able to have a single glance of her chat day and moreover the next day was a holiday. I could not believe that I was getting annoyed at the fact that I got a day off from work the very next day also. Just to have a glance of her; I was even ready to face ‘my evil on earth’ manager. Everything seemed interesting and new to me. Suddenly the world around me had changed. Suddenly I started liking my office, loving my boss and his torture.

Anyway I was at home the whole day and slept for a few hours in the day time even. My evening was pre-planned as a few of us were to visit a friend’s place at Dumdum as the next day was his birthday. We had planned a whole night’s celebration. Two of my friends Avishek and Piyush came to my place and we left for Dumdum in the evening around seven by metro. I was missing her more at the metro station as my mind was stuck at the platform and I was just thinking about her. We boarded the train, and were busy chatting; I broke the news to them about her. They were delighted and excited, and the idiots wanted to see her photo, as If I was carrying one. The compartment was quite empty as it was a late Sunday evening. I just wished secretly that I could see her once. But nothing of that sort happened and that added to my disappointment and anxiety. As time passed by, I lost all hopes of meeting her. Meanwhile we reached Belgachia station and you won’t believe I did something really stupid. God answered my prayers and I simply jumped out of the train without any prior notice to my friends, I could not even give any notice to myself. There was no time to think and act. It was just the opposite. The situation demanded to first act and then think. There was no time to inform them as the train doors close within a few minutes.

Won’t you ask why I did that? Obviously the reason was the person I was longing to see at least once since morning. She was at the platform. And it was very obvious that she noticed me jump, not only she but everyone else on the platform did. And my poor friends couldn’t make out what happened and were screaming from the window as the train left.

In the meantime her train to Tollygunje came. But that moment something special happened, something remarkable. She did not board the train but asked her friends to take it. I got the hint from her. And that was enough for me to gather courage and talk to her, for if I didn’t then God won’t forgive me ever, because I would end up wasting such a precious chance. The platform became quite empty and I was standing just next to her. I somehow initiated the conversation, my heart beat doubled at that time.

    Hi, I am Samarth.

    Hi She answered.

Can I know your name please Mam?

    I am Anisha Roy Choudhury.

I was nervous like hell, more than I was when we were having our campus interviews.

    I repeated my full name,

    I am Samarth Banerjee.

Ok. It is nice to meet you. Can I say something? My lady said.

Man I had guts to call her as my lady at least privately.

    Yes, sure Anisha, go ahead.

The jump was great. She laughed and blushed at the same time.

I too started laughing, her remark made me feel a bit lighter. I was in seventh heaven as she said that.

I am sorry, Anisha. (I said that just to please her as I knew very well the next question would be, But why are you feeling sorry Samarth?)

But why are you feeling sorry Samarth? Anisha said. (See, I had told you so. I smiled secretly as she repeated exactly what I had thought)

No, seriously I did not want to embarrass you, but honestly I could not stop myself when I saw you at the platform.

    Its ok Samarth.

My cell rang. Please excuse me, just a second Anisha.

Idiot what happened, why did you jump like that? Avishek called up.

Nothing much yaar, had I not jumped today; I would have missed out my train. I replied.

What are you talking about idiot? What do you mean by your train? Avi reacted furiously.

"Yaar I will tell you every little detail later. You guys please wait for

me at the platform, don’t take the exit. I will be catching the next one.

Ok idiot, but do catch the next one and for God’s sake, don’t jump out like that.

Yes, yes I am coming in a few minutes.

Anisha before the next train comes, can I ask you something?

    Yes Samarth, tell me.

Can we be friends? Would you mind giving me your cell number?

I somehow dared to ask the tag question, although I was mentally prepared just for the first one.

Well I wouldn’t mind being friends with you, but for now as we are yet strangers, apart from knowing each other’s name, I would better prefer to communicate through an online chat, Yahoo, Gmail, Orkut. I hope you understand my situation. Anisha said

Oh, that’s ok, please give me your mail id, I will send you an invite.

    Ok, cool, note it down.

Thanks Anisha. Hey my train has arrived. See you on Tuesday at the platform and do add me to your list of friends. Tomorrow I have got a day off. Bye.

Don’t say Bye, I don’t like it. My lady said.

I was confused over that remark, but there was no time to ask her anything.

    At Dumdum Station:

Here comes our stupid superman. What would you prefer, a slap or a kick for your nonsensical act? Piyush remarked

Hey chill mate, I would have missed out many things today had I not done it.

Yes, idiot and had anything happened to you, we would have missed you forever. Avishek was fuming.

I am extremely sorry and won’t do such a thing ever again. Now please cool down, let us take the exit and I bet, you people would be damn excited to hear the second episode of my story.

I told them about my achievement.

Good boss, keep it up, it is ok; something is better than nothing, Piyush said.

What do you mean, I didn’t get you? I asked.

Idiot I mean at least you got the mail id, if not the phone number.

Yes that’s not bad for a start, but I hope she has not given a wrong mail id, Avishek added.

"No, I am confident of my lady, she won’t play such a prank on me.

Your lady, hmmm, well man so your confidence is growing, Avishek said and both of them started laughing at me.

Well idiots, someday you will be at the receiving end, I said.

Ok we will see. Now let us move to Indra’s place, he would be waiting eagerly. Piyush remarked.

    AT INDRA’S PLACE:

    Centre Sinthi Road:

Dude we have got a plate full of stories, just tell me from where to begin. Do you want a Superman’s story or would you prefer a Karan Johar’s tale of love? Avishek asked Indra.

Hmmm... love story, whose is it, first tell me that. Indra said.

It is about our one and only Mr. Banerjee, our Banerjee babu’s story dude. Piyush replied.

That must be interesting boss, so for whom are you waiting, just begin. Indra said.

Just a second, let me prepare a drink before you begin to narrate the saga.

Here we are, let ‘s have a peg each for Mr. Banerjee. Cheers to Banerjee babu. Indra got excited.

It is not what you are expecting Indra, but Mr. Banerjee has made quite a good progress and we are very confident that he is moving in the right track. It all began at the Tollygunje metro station, two glances and our hero got bowled over. Piyush said.

Now dude listen to the superman part. Avishek added.

No, please Avi, we will hear that later, let Piyush continue with the love episode. Indra said

Buddy, the superman episode is a part of the love tale. Avi added.

OOOO then continue. I thought it was a different story. Indra replied.

Our superhero jumped out of the metro today on seeing her at the Belgachia platform just as the doors were about to close.

    "What???
