Chapter 2
Rebellious Thoughts
Last year, Mirza was arrested for making an inflammatory speech at his university. It was alleged that he was trying to divide the communities. However, he was released due to a lack of credible evidence and the fact that, as India was a democracy, freedom of speech and religion were sacrosanct in India.
The arrest and subsequent release did not change Mirza. He went back to his old routine. Regularly in college, he continued to hold meetings with his friends, professing radical views. He again started putting his thoughts openly in front of everyone. It was clear that he was not at all afraid of his anti-government views.
He was again involved in his earlier activities, and then Jhanvi came into his life.
Although they had become acquainted with each other, Mirza and Jhanvi were not meant to fall in love. But love happens when you least expect it and think you might not be in love. Love does not look at common sense, background, or, least of all, religious beliefs.
Jhanvi belonged to a very traditional South Indian family. Mirza was from an equally orthodox Muslim family, and it was clear that the two of them did not mix well in that completely divided society. Their paths would never have crossed
