    Dragon's Surprise

You bastards! Princess Petra cried, struggling in her chains. She stood before a thick pole, ten feet tall. Manacles were bolted to the pole above her head, into which they’d locked her delicate wrists. She wore a pure white sacrificial gown. Really, just a wisp of translucent silk. The kind of gown a bride might wear to her wedding bed. I’m going to come back and haunt you all!

The only person who could hear her was her guard, her twin brother. Prince Carl. The royal court was assembled halfway across the city atop the royal castle. They were too far away for her to make out faces. Her father’s common born subjects gathered in the plaza below, eager to see the legendary dragon. Word was he was a particularly spectacular beast, all silver and gold scales.

The beautiful brunette paused just long enough to glance at the horizon. The dragon was flying low, his wickedly pointed head swinging back and forth as he searched for food. It wouldn’t be long before he found her, his virgin sacrifice.

She almost peed herself thinking about it.

Carl, I beg you, let me go. I promise to run away and never come back, she said. Her twin brother stood guard. Tears streamed down his proud face. He didn’t want her to die any more than she did, but he believed in sacred duty. It was her duty to be the dragon’s virgin sacrifice. It was his duty to guard her until the dragon took her away. Please, help me. I don’t want to die!

I know. I can’t, he said hoarsely, more tears flowing. I want to, Petra. God, how I want to help you. But…we must fulfill our destiny. We must do what is right for the kingdom.

Petra felt sorry for him. She loved her twin as much as he loved her. As only twins could love each other. Unfortunately for her, he was a far more duty-bound person than she was. She knew he wouldn’t be able to betray their father’s and the peoples’ trust. He would guard her, ensuring she was alive and waiting for the dragon.

They were atop a high tower in the exact center of the city. It was called Dragon’s Tower, since it only had one purpose: Virgin sacrifices whenever a dragon passed through. Thankfully dragons were rare and Petra was the first such sacrifice in forty years.

Lucky me, she thought, breathlessly watching the dragon’s approach.

He still looked black at that distance, but the morning sunlight struck his constantly moving scales making him sparkle. She couldn’t believe something so beautiful would eat her alive.

He’d passed by the city a week earlier, and burnt half the city down with his hellfire breath. It was his way of saying hello, I’m here. Feed me. The next day there was a lottery of all the city’s virgins of marriage age. Princesses were not required by dragons, just virgins. To her chagrin, Petra’s name was entered into the lottery. No pass for a princess, either. Virgins were virgins, whether royal, noble, or common born.

And her name was pulled and announced.

Tradition said the sacrifice had to be guarded until the dragon’s arrival by a male virgin, as well. Her brother was more than a little embarrassed to be chosen, since magic picked out the male virgin to guard the sacrifice. So he couldn’t deny it. No man his age wanted anyone knowing he was still a virgin. And in truth, few were.

I prayed the dragon wouldn’t return, Carl said, his voice barely a whisper. Petra heard such pain, such heartbreak she started crying for him instead of herself. Sometimes they don’t, but there he is.

Yes, there he is, Petra said, slumping in her chains.

They watched breathlessly as the dragon suddenly started
