Vlad was the oldest, most powerful vampire in the city, and their current Lord. He was a dark-haired, dark-eyed man, with a fierce face. Word was Vlad was more than three thousand years old, and that he actually knew Alexander the Great.

"She looks delicious," Henri Saint-Marie said. He lifted her chin with his index finger, and then pulled her lower lip down with his thumb. Buffy let out a shuddering sigh as he leaned down until his lips brushed hers when he spoke. "I've wanted you for a long time."

Buffy Beauchamp froze. Was that the scrape of a shoe dragged across concrete? She was not alone in the moonless night, which was scary when hunting vampires. She pulled her long blonde hair back and tied it in a knot. If it came to a life and death fight, the last thing she needed was being blinded by her own whipping hair.

A flickering light caught her attention. It was coming from a broken window in the next warehouse up the dark alley. There was no electricity in any of the surrounding buildings, so the homeless built small fires for light and warmth.

The district had three streets, and two blocks, lined with abandoned warehouses, most of which were damaged by a tornado a few years back and never repaired. Until recently, it was a haven for squatters and homeless people. Something had scared them all away, and she had her suspicions.
