A fierce north wind cut through the trees. Katja drew her cowl closer about her face and muttered yet another curse upon the head of her useless husband. Likely he was passed out in front of the crackling home hearth even now. Peacefully sleeping off his ale, while she floundered through the winter night in search of their milk cow.

She was cursed, Katja decided. Bad enough to have a fool for a husband. But a fool husband who again and again forgot to shut the gate when he stumbled in drunk? And to have a fool for a cow, who insisted on wandering out into a blizzard?

Cursed, she thought. No getting around that.

On the crest of a low hill, she paused to gaze into the moonlit forest that stretched out on all sides. Only a few paces away, the world dissolved into a wall of white, churning snow. There was little chance of finding the cow’s trail. Already drifts had blown over her own footsteps, obscuring the way back to the farm.
