“The Wind In the Willows” is undoubtedly a very popular book. Actually, it is two separate books put into one. On one hand there are the chapters which describe the adventures of Toad and on the other hand there are those chapters which explore human emotions such as fear, nostalgia, awe, wanderlust.

Elders often find “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” the most interesting of the chapters in the book. They often read this chapter to the young children.

The Edwardian age was definitely a decade of social discontent and growing international tension. The British Empire had begun to crumble, but at the same time, children’s literature flourished during that decade.

    Chapter One: Introduction

    The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame was first published in 1908. It is considered a classic of children’s literature.

    The story sometimes moves very fast and sometimes it is slow. The story of the novel revolves around four anthropomorphized animal characters in a pastoral version of England.

    The novel got a lot of popularity and still retains its popularity owing to its unique mixture of adventure, mysticism, morality, and camaraderie. The book is also celebrated for its evocation of the nature of the Thames Valley.

    Grahame was the secretary of the Bank of England. He retired from his job in 1908. Having left his post in that Bank, he moved back to Cookham, Berkshire, the place where he had spent his happy childhood.
