About this ebook

Just when the Soccerheads finally sort the Double Trouble, they start sinking down the table. Fast. No Buck. No coach, and talk of kids leaving. Coachless and rudderless. To top it off, Hammo is getting out of control as the team starts to crumble. Help might be around the corner with talk of an academy coming to town, but will it all happen before it's too late? Buck returns just in time to help out the team, but he’s not the Buck they knew.

Author

Frank Bogna

Frank Bogna lives in Queensland, Australia with his wife, kids and many pets. He started writing the Soccerheads series of e-books three years ago. The stories are based on real kids and events, although they have been spiced up a bit with some crazy situations and characters. He has been coaching soccer for many years, and still plays (but not very well). He follows soccer with the Australian A-League, but likes to see the odd AC Milan or Chelsea game. His spare time is taken up coaching, writing, reading other author's books and trying to keep fit with his kids.

‘What do we do now Sammy?’ snivelled Hammo as we trudged to our car after the game, stubbed our toes into the turf and kicking up dust. No, not just any game, but the last game with Mr C in charge.

    Our last game with him.

    Forever.

We were just doing nicely, trying to get to the final and winning some games, and he tells us he has to leave! His mum was sick back in Greece. Mr C, not now, please, not now.

Our heads were low, our confidence even lower …lower than a lizard’s gizzards.

Hammo was in one of those moods, already having ripped his Unicorn jersey off in protest just after Mr C’s announcement. Not me; I wear my jersey until the last breath, until the last whiff of sweat gets to mum’s tortured nostrils and she tells me to take it off or else.

    Hammo got started.

‘Now we’ve got no coach. We’re not winning that many games and we’ve only just sorted out those twins. They could go back to their old ways you know Sammy…pulling my hair, whacking me and being a pain. They’ll be out of control. Their freaky mate.’

He took a big breath, letting out an even bigger puff. Hammo was getting worked up, his nostrils flaring and starting to go a bit troppo.

Standing halfway between the field and the car park, I looked around for any other players that could come over to help me talk to Hammo. The place was deserted. Hardly a player in sight. Just grass, gravel and space. Empty space that suddenly went silent. Birds stopped chirping. Oh no, Hammo was about to go into one of his rants.

‘Ya don’t even care, Sammy, ya wimp,’ he spluttered.

    That wasn’t right.

I’d never had a friend like Hammo before. He says some really nice things sometimes, but other times, he just lets me have it. Some friend.

    Of course I cared.

I only got better when I started playing for the Soccerheads. Mooshy United was so ordinary and hardly any of the kids even spoke to me. I was making new friends and getting a lot better.

Now without Mr C, I was probably going to slip, you know … start to lose my skills. It didn’t help that I was the weakest link on the team! Half a game as a number six doesn’t mean I’m there forever. That was just one game.

Hammo can be really unfair sometimes. I had to say something.

‘Of course I care Hammo, but I’m trying to be calm about it, not go psycho.’

    Oops.

I’d never called Hammo psycho before,
