You’re best known now as an outspoken radio pundit. Was that always the plan?
It started when I was at Billericay – they’d call and ask about Spurs, and it grew from there. I thought, ‘I’m not Steven Gerrard, I’m not Frank Lampard; I’ve had a very good career but no one wants to hear that boring, politically correct view that a lot of footballers will give you’. I’m just a normal bloke. I had ups and downs, I messed it up, made a lot of mistakes. I simply wanted to be honest.
Has it ever got a bit out of control on air?
The Spurs and Arsenal stuff always gets a bit heated, but the person who really dug me out was our producer
