About this ebook

This is the third volume of Gargatholil's 4-volume work, Depth Astrology: An Astrological Handbook--the first comprehensive handbook interpreting the astrological symbol set in the tradition of such pioneers as Dane Rudhyar, Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo. In this volume, planetary placements in each of the 12 zodiacal houses are interpreted using the psycho-transformative depth astrology approach. "Planets" include the 10 traditional astrological planets, the Moon's Nodes and the Part of Fortune. Each interpretation contains: an explanation of the essential meaning and potential manifestations of the planet in its house placement, the transcendent potential of the planetary placement, manifestations of the planetary placement from a place of insecurity, and the focus of each of the primary psychological functions symbolized by the planet. The handbook is searchable using the Table of Contents, with links back to the Table of Contents for ease of multiple look-ups.

Depth Astrology - Planets in Houses is a valuable tool for the novice just entering the field of depth astrology, for the astrological professional desiring a look-up of planetary interpretations that provide guidance to the unfolding potentialities of planetary placements, or for anyone seeking to use the astrological symbol-set as a tool for self-discovery and growth.

Novices are encouraged to purchase Volume 1 - Introduction. The complete 4-volume set is also available as a single e-book.

Gargatholil

Gargatholil's interest in astrology began more than 40 years ago with his discovery of the works of Dane Rudhyar and Alan Leo. Their love of music goes back farther. One of the first albums Gargatholil bought was Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. In the 1980s, Gargatholil;s knowledge of astrology was further informed by the writing of Donna Cunningham, Stephen Arroyo and Liz Greene. Gargatholil has always appreciated astrology as a tool for self-knowledge and personal growth. He believes, while transits may be valuable for understanding the "astrol weather" one is experiencing, it is the natal chart that holds the key to interpreting the drives and motivations, qualities, internal conflicts and challenges, and potential of the personality resident in this lifetime. Gargatholil has long rejected using astrology to attempt to predict the future on both practical and spiritual grounds.Gargatholil has a Libra Sun and Taurus Ascendant (both ruled by Venus), with Moon in Capricorn in the tenth house (both ruled by Saturn) cusp Aquarius (ruled by Uranus). The primary rulers of Gargatholil's chart, Venus and Saturn, are conjunct in Virgo, while the Moon forms the point of a Yod to Saturn and Uranus. Understandably, Gargatholil has a straight gig and does not wish his identity to be revealed. He also is grateful to have been blessed with the capacity to bring the content of the Higher Mind to a more concrete and structured level.Gargatholil has eclectic taste in music. His criteria for considering something worthwhile listening to boils down to "as long as she's been doin' it right." Gargatholil lived the Sixties Countercultural experience and the music of that era occupies a special place in their heart.

SUN HOUSE PLACEMENTS

Sun in the First House

Strong Focus on Self-Identity

This is a strong placement for the Sun, indicating considerable focus on your self-identity. Both the Sun and the first house are associated with identity—who you feel you are. Normally, this placement suggests that you have a strong personality, unless the Sun has difficult aspects or is in a weak sign. Confidence, self-esteem and self-identity are likely to be issues that concern you but—unless there are indications in your chart to the contrary—you will generally deal with these issues positively. You may be given lessons, especially in early life, that challenge your self-confidence or provoke an identity crisis. Meeting these challenges is likely to result in you developing a stronger personality.

Transcendent Potential

A sign that you are actualizing the transcendent potential of the Sun in the first house is that you have attained a whole and balanced manifestation of the self, generally after a period of crisis and struggle. You first realize the illusion of the ego and the reality of the True or Inner Self. You realize that the personality-self is a vehicle for the soul and Spirit in this mundane world. You have worked towards your individuation and purification and are seen by others as a Whole Person (although you yourself may see the distance separating you from your ideal). You radiate and project a strong personality, but without the burden of ego. You are calm and certain in your self-identity.

Insecurity

Your inner Self knows the illusion of ego, but because your ego is unwilling to face this knowledge, your subconscious must protect your ego from discovering the illusion. The most common method is simply to foster a strong identification of self and ego. If your subconscious knowledge is too strong or dissonant, however, you are likely to be insecure about your self-identity. Your ego is filled with a sense of its own inadequacy. You may have a feeling of worthlessness--why is everyone better than me? You may have a sense of powerlessness or confusion about self-identity. Even those who have attained a high level of functioning and self-awareness may be plagued by a sense of guilt or false humility about themselves. At the root of the ego's insecurity is its fear of being exposed for a fraud.

Those with Sun in the first house are vulnerable to two extremes if the psyche is unbalanced. At one extreme, you may have an overabundance of ego or self-interest resulting in you being too concerned with yourself. If this energy is introverted, you will be self-absorbed. If the energy is extroverted, you may manifest your personality too much. At the other extreme, you may suffer from a severe lack of self-esteem. In this case, it is the identity and the ego which are problematic for you. You do not know how to express your personality and identity in a healthy manner. The resulting personality is dysfunctional. Alternatively, working out this problem may become a life-goal. If this is the case, a more complete self will be the result.

Focus of Your Self-Identity

This placement denotes a strong focus on self-identity. A central question, faced consciously or unconsciously by you is, Who am I? Throughout your life, you are likely to deal with issues involving the place of self, the meaning of identity and the development of persona. Depending on the aspects to the Sun in your chart, the overall composition of the chart, your stage of consciousness and your inherited tendencies, these issues may be dealt with in a confident and/or self-evident manner or from an insecure and/or questioning place.

Your personality may also express undertones of Sun-in-Aries.

Sun in the Second House

Focus of Identity on Resources and Values

A Second House placement generally is a dependent position for the Sun. This is because you will tend to derive your identity from what you possess, from your resources and from what you value. Most people have been conditioned to value certain things and, if this is true for you, then your identity will be conditioned. The degree to which your identity is dependent on the possessions you have is related to the degree to which you hold materialistic values. If you value things, your identity will be determined by the things you possess. If you value certain characteristics and qualities, your identity will be determined by those characteristics you cultivate. If, on the other hand, you value virtue or spirituality, then you will identify yourself as a person concerned with these things.

Whatever you value, you are likely to work hard to acquire and possess that. Thus, much of your focus will be on what you value, what you have and how you can acquire more of what you value. If what you hold to be valuable are material objects, then you will seek to surround yourself with material things. Similarly, if you hold other values, you will seek these out and build your identity around your association with the things that you value.

An issue that you are likely to face, particularly early in life, is determining what it is that you value. If you never address this issue, then the super-ego and societal conditioning are likely to make this determination for you. This will most likely result in you placing a high on material acquisitions because that is what this society conditions us to value. The more you determine your own values, autonomously, the less conditioned your identity will be.

Another concern suggested by the Sun's placement in the Second House is what resources are available to you. You may feel dependent on having resources at your disposal. Your access to resources, or lack thereof, is likely to affect your sense of security. Feeling secure, particularly from a physical and material standpoint, is fundamental to you feeling good about yourself. Often, this sense of security is necessary for you to be able to turn your attention to anything else. Once established, however, this material security and knowing that you possess sufficient resources generally allows you to develop a strong self-identity and a great deal of self-confidence.

Transcendent Potential

You can actualize the transcendent potential of Sun in the Second House when you address the question of values, of what is important in life and what things and pursuits are of real value. These are questions that may have occupied you since your early years. As your self-identity is largely formed by your value system, you are likely to have spent much mental and emotional energy sorting through your values and defining them. Through this process, you discover that no one can rely upon his/her material possessions or resources, since these are inherently impermanent and subject to change.

You may go through a period of feeling lost and insecure. However, by going through this period, you find those things that are real and lasting--Love and Self/God-realization. You give up running after that which moss and rust doth corrupt and you cease to identify with material possessions. Instead, you engage yourself in gathering that Treasure which is Real. You find that those resources are right within yourself. Working hard and diligently, you surround yourself with spiritual wealth. You realize that who you are in the life after death will be determined by these possessions only.

Insecurity

When you define your worth by what you have, you never have enough and, therefore, you never feel adequate or worthy. Inwardly, you know that all your possessions and resources are liable to be lost, leaving you without support and without self-definition. Thus, you can never be secure within yourself. This inner insecurity drives you relentlessly to acquire more and more possessions in your attempt to feel self-worth. Even if you ostensibly feel proud of your possessions and resources, your hunger for more belies your inner insecurity and fear that you may lose all.

Focus of Your Self-Identity

You are likely to identify with what you have. This is usually material, but it may be nonmaterial also. For instance, if you identify with your value system, you feel that you are what you value. Most people with Sun in the Second House, however, will take their identity from what and how much they possess. If you possess much, you are likely to hold yourself in high esteem. If you possess little, you may suffer from lack of self-esteem. One defense against low self-esteem is to value what you have, whether it is great or little, because the more you consider that your possessions are valuable, the more self-worth you experience.

If you suffer a loss of your possessions, it is likely to be a particularly hard blow because this loss strikes at your very identity and self-worth. To the extent that you are focus on your material possessions and circumstances and you measure yourself by how much you have lost or gained, then the Sun’s Second House placement Sun is a particularly weak and dependent astrological position. However, to the extent that you have defined your own values and risen above society’s materialistic conditioning, a Second House Sun can indicate a strong identity grounded in a sure conviction of what is valuable in life.

Your personality may also express undertones of Sun-in-Taurus

Sun in the 3rd house

Focus of Identity on the Immediate Environment

A third house position is an extroverted placement for the Sun, but your energy tends to be limited to the immediate and the here-and-now. Your focus is usually on the environment that you can physically sense and on those relationships that are close at hand. You may wish to explore, discover and utilize your environment. There is so much to be seen and experienced right around you, however, that you almost never have to go very far afield, emotionally or mentally, in order to become absorbed in what is going on around you. It is as if the world is new and full of wonder for you. You are Adam/Eve in the Garden and are naming all God's creatures.

In the third house, the Sun--your awareness and self-awareness--shines brightly and directly so that you see and experience the world in all its detail. The task before you, therefore—the task in which your Being is absorbed--is to know your world through your experiencing it. Knowing it, you begin to take control of it and having taken control of it, it becomes benign and useful. All the while, your concern is with what is immediately present. You must experience this world and, unless inhibited by other circumstances, you should be eager and enthusiastic is your discovery of your surroundings.

Transcendent Potential

Your primary task is to learn how to Be in the Here and Know. This means to focus on what is really Present, without distraction. By clearly focusing on what actually is, you transcend the chattering of your mind, which is consumed not with the Real, but only with the apparent. You learn that there is no past or future, only Now; there is no where or there, only Here. Coming to the focus of Ever-Presentness, you see what Is. Seeing what Is, you know that it is unending and you know that you are That.

Insecurity

If you are insecure within yourself, you are often faced with the immediacy of your environment and you are overwhelmed and threatened by it. The Existence that surrounds you is too much for you to comprehend. You, therefore, set boundaries, develop categories and constructs, and define a world for yourself that is safe and manageable. In this world, there are no subtleties. Complexities have been erased. You simply live in this world of forms and roles that you have devised to protect yourself against the rawness of Existence.

You thoroughly trust your senses and you can conceive of nothing beyond them. Even though you may express a belief in an other-world or after-life, which ostensibly lies beyond the senses, you cannot really conceive of a world without sense and the direct experience of form.

If you are challenged by the complexities of life, you react negatively. You cannot handle challenges to your simple, direct world. You may deny complexity, or you may try to fit it into your simplified vision of the world. You may try to control it by categorizing it. Whatever your response, you do not let yourself experience any threatening complexity. For you, the world exists as surface and if you admitted its depth, it would swallow you up.

Focus of Your Self-Identity

You tend to identify with your immediate surroundings. You may do this actively or passively. Passively, you take your identity from the circumstances in which you find yourself. You are defined by the place you live, the friends and family with whom you interact, the facts you know, your memories and what you have experienced. If your circumstances change, if you must deal with a totally new environment, your identity may change as well. Thus, your identity may be transient and changeable, dependent as it is on your environment. This may not provide you with much security in terms of knowing who you are.

If you identify actively with your surroundings, you tend to see yourself as the one who interacts with your environment—the one who discovers, the one who tames the world, the one who collects knowledge, the one who categorizes, etc. In this case, you are likely to see yourself as active and dominating, free and self-determining. You are the one who enters into your environment and takes control of it. Your world is here and you are here and you are who you are in relation to your place in that world.

Your personality may also express undertones of Sun-in-Gemini

Sun in the 4th House

Focus of Identity on Emotional Security and Rootedness

In the Fourth House, the Sun's placement suggests that your sense of being is introverted and protected. You are likely to feel some need to be sheltered from the harshness and danger of the world. Nurturing and bonding with family often become more important in your self-development than exploring the world or expressing yourself in it. You generally will look for a sense of security so that your being can rest safely.

Your task is to prepare that secure place for yourself and, in the process, often for others as well. You are likely to first look for that sense of security within your home and through your family. Often, the more you can draw your family around you, the more real and alive you feel. Thus, the focus of your energy is often on family matters and/or the home--the place where the family is brought together and finds security.

Emotional security is also likely to be important to you, particularly emotional security that is derived from nurturing, family support, a sense of heritage and community, and the maintenance of close bonds. To the extent that family relationships do not promote a stable and secure emotional environment, relationships with family members--especially your mother and/or offspring--are likely to be an issue for you. However, you may be driven to realize a self-referenced emotional security that is based on confidence in your own inner foundation and rootedness. Your sense of being is often ultimately grounded within your own subconscious.

Transcendent Potential

You feel yourself as a being rooted in a universal medium--the stuff from which all Life is derived. The image of the Universal Mother may be an important archetype in your inner development. You feel cradled by the Universal Life Force and you realize your essential identity with that Force from which you have sprung and in which you have your roots. It is through this deep and fundamental Self-knowledge that you gain your sense of security and confidence of Being.

By withdrawing into yourself to explore your own subconscious, you expand your consciousness to include the Whole. You are now a member of the Universal Family and Compassion is your chief emotion. Your primary object is the Basic Thing and your field of action is the Root of Existence.

Insecurity

You are always seeking security and emotional support but you are never satisfied that you have obtained this. You cling to those/that with whom/which you have bonded and you become possessive of these relationships. You are ever in need of emotional reinforcement, for you feel no independent sense of self-hood and existence. You lack confidence beyond the small realm within which you have chosen to confine yourself.

Your life and identity is dependent on your receiving emotional reward from family members and you may obsessively or neurotically care for them in order to earn these rewards. You may constantly worry, partly as a means to justify your existence to yourself and partly in fear that something may happen to your support system. You are afraid to leave your close, comfortable world to explore either your outer or inner world and you try to bind others to your own limitations.

Focus of Your Self-Identity

You tend to derive your identity from your domestic environment and from your close and family relationships. You often are who your family is and/or who your family wants you to be. You are likely to identify yourself as a feeling person, a caring and nurturing person and a family provider or care-giver.

Your identity is likely to be formed or influenced by the level of emotional support you receive from others. Your heritage and family background may also play a role in shaping your identity. You may become interested in your roots in order to discover your own self-identity. With regard to identity issues, you are likely to view self-identity as basic and fundamental to your life and personality.

Your personality may also express undertones of Sun-in-Cancer.

Sun in the Fifth House

Focus of Identity on Creativity and Self-Expression

With Sun in the fifth house, your focus tends to be on the creative side of life. Your disposition is generally outward and extroverted. You are likely to be concerned with how you can express yourself in and to the world. Your primary mode of self-expression is likely to be creativity.

That which you create becomes an extension of yourself. Consequently, you generally become busy extending yourself in the world and increasing your personal interaction and personal exposure through creative engagement. Your goal in this is usually to obtain recognition and self-validation. Therefore, your well-being generally depends upon the response of others to your activities and to the image that you create through your persona.

This need for recognition and validation may not be expressed directly. Often, you project yourself through your creations and you interpret the world's reactions to your creations personally. Therefore, you are likely to be heavily engaged in the process of creation and in interaction with what you have created.

For many, the primary created thing that is directly produced by you is your children. For this reason, children are often an important element in your life. The connection between the fifth house and children may also show itself as an affinity or a search for child-like innocence. Such an attitude can free you from limitations and allow you a freer range of self-expression and creativity. The issues faced by you are, therefore, likely to revolve around freeing yourself from artificial constraints that inhibit your creativity--and by extension your being; discovering and actualizing your creative capacity; achieving recognition and appreciation for who you are and what you have created; and separating your essential being from those things that you have created.

Transcendent Potential

You can actualize the transcendent potential of the Sun in the fifth house when you realize that creativity is an attribute that humanity shares with the Divinity. Your task is to become more God-like without succumbing to pride or confusing your essential servant-nature with pretensions to the Divine. In order to achieve this, you must engage in the process of Self-realization. You must first realize that you are Not This/Not That. The Creation and the Self--though in a sense also created--are not the same. One is Subject, the other Object.

Neither is the Creation yours. Rather, it is Yours and the role of humanity is to act as the representative of the Divine within Your Creation. Only be separating the Self from that which is created can the Self engage fully with the Divine in the process of continual creation and re-creation of the world. You must adopt Perfect Servanthood in order to be truly free and to find complete Self-expression, realization and fulfillment.

Insecurity

Without a sense of your own independent self-worth or even being, you are totally dependent on recognition and appreciation from others for self-esteem and validation. However, being without an essential sense of self-worth, you are never satisfied with the recognition and validation that you receive. You attach yourself to your creations in order to suck self-awareness and being from them. This may manifest as an obsessive concern with or possessiveness toward your children, constantly promoting that to which you lay a claim of authorship, neurotic concern over how you are being perceived and how you are presenting yourself, taking undue risks in order to gain recognition, plotting against others in a battle for recognition and authority, or being too self-absorbed in your personality and self-expressions.

Focus of Your Self-Identity

You tend to identify with what you have created. To the extent that your persona is a creation of your psyche, you may identify with the external projection of your persona. However, you are likely to gain your sense of identity and self-worth from what you have made. Inwardly, you tend to say, I created this and that and this is who I am (i.e., the person who could create such things). If you identify your selfhood with those external objects that you have created, then you are vulnerable to your self-worth being affected by what happens to those objects and offspring and by how they are received and treated by the world.

If you identify with the creative force within you that has allowed you to create and manifest yourself in the world, then you will be less dependent on externals. Aware of your creative potential, you know that you and your creations are separate and that, no matter what happens to your creatures, you still has the capacity to create. It is this creative capacity, then, that defines for you who you are.

Your personality may also express undertones of Sun-in-Leo.

Sun in the Sixth House

Focus of Identity on Self-Refinement

A Sixth House Sun generally indicates an introverted personality. The Sun, as it were, can be inhibited from shining forth both because you tend to be self-absorbed (in your own refinement and perfection) and because your relationships toward others tend to be supportive in nature. For the Sun's energy to flow, you must find the proper channels—organizing your energies, recognizing your duty in the world and, often, expressing yourself analytically.

You may have to come to terms with your dharma--your assigned and proper role in life. If you try to strain against your dharma and become what you are not, your chances of meeting with success will be diminished. You may find, however, that you naturally align yourself with your dharma. You may take satisfaction in work, in supporting others, or in bringing others towards a state of health.

You are also likely to be concerned, in one way or another, with your own state of health and wholeness. Your focus on self-refinement and self-improvement can be accompanied by a tendency toward self-analysis. This can manifest as self-awareness, self-criticism or worry. You may desire to attain perfection, but you are more likely to see your imperfections. This real or imagined self-knowledge may contribute to your reluctance to take on leadership roles or to become too independent.

You may need someone or something to serve in order to feel validated and you may need to feel that there is always room to improve in order to feel motivated and alive.

Transcendent Potential

You can actualize the transcendent potential of the Sun in the Sixth House when you choose a path of seeking purity and perfection. This path involves continual self-refinement, service to others and growing humility. Self-analysis may play a role, but an appreciation of dharma is more important.

You view life as a process of continually coming closer to the ideal of Perfection. Patiently, you allow life to wash off layer after layer of psychic dirt. Gradually, you become purer and purer. To attain real purity and perfection, however, you must ultimately lose your ego. This means that you must find and engage in an attitude of Perfect Servanthood. This is actually the height of attainment, for Perfect Servanthood implies knowledge and relationship with Perfect Lordship. Only when you attain that level of purity that you have striven for all of your life will you become worthy to serve the Divine.

Insecurity

When you are inwardly insecure, you feel inadequate to the task of self-perfection and, inwardly, you reject this quest. You develop a profound sense of inadequacy and worthlessness, compounded by being fated to occupy subservient positions within society. Your reactions may include slavishness and sycophancy, criticism and back-biting of others (especially those thought to be in a weaker position), or an over-compensating sense of self-importance and need to show superiority. You may also sacrifice yourself to your work in order to try to prove your worth to yourself and to others. Thus, you are vulnerable to excessive worry and to ruining your health from stress and overwork.

Focus of Your Self-Identity

You tend to identify with work, duty and being supportive to others. You have a tendency to see yourself as someone who operates behind the scenes or as someone who is placed in a lower order role. You may also gain a sense of identity from providing service to others. Your self-worth becomes linked to your ability to be of service. The danger here is that, in order to feel validated, you may trap yourself and others into a relationship of dependency.

You may also take your identity from your involvement in various types of self-improvement. This may range from such things as body-building to a commitment to inner work on self-refinement and purification. You generally feel empowerment, vibrancy, vitality and self-assurance from the pursuit of typically sixth house activities--work, service, attendance to duty, self-improvement and health matters. When you engage in these activities, it may be easier for you to express your personality and you may also feel more whole and self-fulfilled.

Your personality may also express undertones of Sun-in-Virgo.

Sun in the Seventh House

Focus of Identity on Relationships

A Seventh House position of the Sun suggests duality and opposition, since the Sun (self) is primarily concerned with other in this house. This is not a strong placement for expressing your personality, except that your personality can shine when engaging in one-on-one relationships. Potentially, you can be conflicted about your self or you may take your self-worth and self-identity too much from other people. The issue to be faced by you, therefore, is to develop a strong sense of being, independent of others.

One can give only what one has and, in order to be real in a meaningful relationship, you must be present to yourself. If you develop this strong sense of self, then you can more fully develop that self by engaging in relationships. Whether from a position of strength or a position of dependency, you are likely to spend much energy and attention on relationships with others. Prime relationships (marriage, business partnership) will be very important in your life but you will tend to see all spheres of life as opportunities to meet and get to know other people.

You will also tend to be concerned with issues involving balance, fairness and harmony--all important in the conduct of healthy relationships. You may be especially concerned with keeping the proper balance between the needs of self and the demands of others. The existence and the quality of your relationships are generally quite important to you. They often become a vehicle through which you can feel alive in your own being.

Transcendent Potential

You can actualize the transcendent potential of Sun in the Seventh House when you learn sublimate your ego. This will begin to happen when you realize the importance of relationships and you become sensitive to the feelings of others. This results in a strong sense of we, which makes cooperation easy. Imbued with the belief that no man is an island, you radiate your personality to whomever you engage in a relationship.

When you take this quality beyond the social dimension, other becomes Other and you begin an eternal relationship with the Divine Beloved. In this relationship, the ego must be totally given up and you must learn to merge yourself into another Being. You then see the reality of temporal relationships but you also see that the spark of the Divine is within everyone. Thus, wherever you look, there is your Beloved.

Insecurity

If you are inwardly insecure, you will likely feel that you have no identity outside of a relationship. You, therefore, place undo importance on this area of your life. You are prone to developing low self-esteem syndrome and to seeing your identity merely as a reflection of your partner. Taking your identity from your relationships, you have a tendency to form dependencies on others. This further debilitates your self-esteem, especially if the relationship is not a positive one.

Focus of Your Self-Identity

You tend to identify yourself in terms of the inter-personal relationships in which you are involved. Your constant involvement with other people generally marks you as a people person. It may be difficult for you to see yourself apart from your relationships with others. Without people to relate to, you may feel cast adrift, without a reference point or even worthless. The great danger is that, rather than identifying yourself as a person who has relationships, you identify yourself merely as the partner in a relationship, becoming an appendage or reflection of your partner.

You may have to strive to create and maintain your own separate identity. Nevertheless, being in a relationship is generally important in order for you to be able to define yourself and in order for you to feel yourself as who you are. You are likely to feel most like yourself when engaged in inter-personal, one-on-one relationships. Thus, you put much energy into the development of relationships.

Your personality may also express undertones of Sun-in-Libra.

Sun in the Eighth House

Focus of Identity on Intimacy and Union

The Sun in the Eighth House suggests that you are engaged with issues of intimacy and privacy and that your identity is linked to these issues. Your tendency will be to be introverted. Because you may feel engaged in matters that should not be publicly observed, you may have difficulty or resistance to expressing yourself or revealing your true identity. You may not be as outgoing as you otherwise might be.

You generally must wrestle with the problem of coming out into the open and dealing with a more public world. At the same time, you are often dealing internally with such private matters as emotional intimacy and security, intimacy in relationships, personal insights and mortality. To the extent that you successfully deal with issues of intimacy, you are likely to develop a proficiency in the art of give and take.

You are also likely to be engaged in a continual balancing act between the needs of your private self and the demands placed on your public self. In dealing with these issues, you may develop greater control and ability to manage your life and these are important skills. These personal skills are often transferable to your public life. In fact, if the depth, intimacy and insight that you experience internally has given you self-confidence, you may naturally want to be in a position of control and managing others externally. Of course, a drive for external power and control may also be an escape from dealing with intimate, personal issues.

The Sun’s Eighth House placement may also suggest a certain degree of dependency, particularly on the resources of others with whom you are intimately involved. Thus, you may face issues of self-sufficiency. These may range from asserting your financial or emotional independence to dealing with the largesse of others.

Transcendent Potential

You may actualize the transcendent potential of the Sun in the Eighth House when, after becoming disillusioned with the level and quality of intimacy offered by external relationships, you explore that most intimate of areas--your own soul. This begins, perhaps, with a plumbing of your emotional depths or with an intensive analysis of your subconscious. Your quest for self-awareness then extends into a deeply mystical exploration of the nature of Self.

Seeking the Primary Source of your own existence, you adopt the position of subject to the object of this Source of All Being which lies within you. This Power or Love within becomes the Beloved for you. You realize that your ego is only an illusion. Being, entranced by your intimate contact with the Real, you, nevertheless, maintain your own identity, but only as a point of view. Finally, like a moth attracted to a flame, you extinguish your self, uniting with the Beloved, to find your True Self within.

Insecurity

If you are inwardly insecure, your subconscious awareness of your own mortality and contingency (i.e., your ultimate non-existence) leads your subconscious self to protect your ego from this awareness, lest your identity (your ego) be destroyed. One manifestation of this internal suppression of awareness is that you suppress your awareness of your dependency on others, especially for emotional security and feelings of intimacy. Consequently, to reinforce your ego and feeling of existence, you feel you must always be in control. Therefore, you focus on gaining and using power, controlling others and enforcing your dominance over others.

You may be attracted to sexuality. For you, this is primarily an expression of power and control. You are likely to have difficulty feeling and sharing real intimacy because this requires letting go and sharing your authentic self. You may also become obsessed with death and the occult, but this obsession is a psychological totem designed to protect you against your own mortality.

Focus of Your Identity

Your identity is likely to be bound up with your intimate relationships, your capacity for sharing, power and/or sexuality. Your identity may also have a demarcation between your persona and who you really are. You may either consciously protect your private identity and life or you may unconsciously possess a dual identity.

You may feel that you are who you are because of your capacity for intimacy and emotional interaction. You may
