    Prologue

Down in the basement, Josh was already waiting. As soon as we were all there, he pushed on a section of the wall and it opened into a pitch black tunnel. Alex set me down, but kept his arm around my waist, pulling me close to his side. Josh gave each of us a flashlight and said, Good luck. When you get out safely, send me word. We hurried down the tunnel and Josh shut the door behind us.

I turned my flashlight on as soon as the door was closed. We need to hurry if we want to get as far away as possible, Admiral Kyle said. We ran as quickly as possible down the corridor.

After half an hour of running, I couldn’t run anymore. I was still groggy from sleep and it was affected me. Alex picked me up so I wouldn’t fall. Everyone else didn’t look like they were as tired as I was and I felt bad that Alex carried me. Go back to sleep, Alyse. Don’t worry about me. I’ll carry you until we reach the end of this tunnel if I have to, Alex said. I watched his face for a while before I drifted to sleep.

When I woke up, the others were walking. I looked ahead of us and saw the flashlights shining on a dead end. I thought that either I had slept a really long time or the others had made quick progress. I looked up at Alex and said, I can walk from here. Thank you for carrying me.

He set me down and replied, You’re welcome.

We walked up to the dead end and Admiral Kyle stopped us. Whatever happens from here on out, keep your guard up and if you need help, just ask. We’ve become a family and anyone would be glad to help you. He pushed on the dead end and it gave way to a shocking surprise.

    Chapter 1

Holy cow! What’s happening?! I shouted. In the distance, a huge camp of armed people were camping toward the East. Further away in the distance, Dr. Rebeka’s house sat silent, looming over the camp. As far as I could tell nothing was disturbed. I wanted so badly to run toward her house to see if she was fine, but I knew that the others wouldn’t let me out of their sight. With that many fighters nearby, it wasn’t a smart idea to go alone.

What do we do now? Ashley asked no one in particular. Everyone turned to Admiral Kyle for his response, but it appeared that he hadn’t heard her. He was watching the camp intently for some reason.

When he did speak, he didn’t answer Ashley. He just asked another question. Alyse, don’t they look familiar to you? Weren’t they in our company? I focused my attention on the camp, especially the flag, and looked for something or someone that would seem familiar. It took me a minute to recognize a few people and the colors they all walked around with.

Yeah, they were. What do you think they’re doing? I asked.

Why don’t we go see? he replied.

Wait a minute. Isn’t that Commander Culp’s tent over there? That’s his flag with his family crest on it, right? Jolene asked.

    Yeah, it is, I replied.

"Why go down there then? Ever since he was kicked out he hasn’t held onto any of his loyalties. He’ll kill us," Brittany said.

They’re all probably rogues, Mark added.

I don’t think we’ll be killed. Commander Culp and I have known each other since I become a marksman, Admiral Kyle replied.

We headed toward the camp hoping they’d recognize us before they started to shoot. It’s one thing to be killed, but another thing to be killed before your friend realizes it’s you. It’s enough to put anyone on their guard, friend or not. In this world, you just couldn’t trust your mother or father to ask questions first and shoot later.

A few yards away from the camp, a man with brown hair and plain clothes on stepped out into our path. Stop. You are not allowed beyond this- ALYSE! It’s really you! I haven’t seen you in so long I was starting to wonder if you were dead! he said, running over and hugging me. Of all of the people that I could’ve run into in a place like this, it was Derek. Although I was overjoyed to see him, I couldn’t help but wonder what he was doing out here with these types of people.

I could see Alex looking at me with a weird expression from the corner of my eye so I turned to him and said, This is Derek. He and I have known each other since we were little. We have stuck by each other’s sides through thick and thin until recently. He’s just like family to me. Like my brother. I turned to Derek and said, You’ve gotten taller, Derek. The last time I saw him, he was only a head taller than me. Now, he’s at least two heads taller.

Well, it seems to me that you’ve had a growth spurt, too.

When was the last time you two saw each other? Ashley asked.

I had to think on it for a few minutes, but finally said, I think it’s been two years. How have you been, Derek? Have you been doing ok?

We’ll talk about that later. I have to get back to work. You and your friends go on ahead, sis. See you guys, Derek replied as he kissed my forehead and walked away. I could see that Alex clearly did not like this gesture. I guess that my love was a little bit jealous of my brother.

Without another minute’s thought, we continued on to Commander Culp’s tent, weaving in and out of tents and soldiers. All of the soldiers turned to stare at us, but none of them seemed familiar at all. I was feeling a little uneasy walking through the camp without a proper escort like Derek. It was stupid to this without someone to lead us. Some would even say it was suicide.

Outside of the tent, two guards stood at attention, dressed head to toe in full battle gear with pistols and swords at their sides. These guys weren’t playing when it came to the protection of their leader. I could never really understand how they could always keep their posture while dressed like they were. It couldn’t be an easy assignment.

The one on the right of the flap to the tent was one that I could recognize even decked out like he was- Steven Ferguson. He was the first to speak, State your business.

We’ve come to see Commander Culp, Admiral Kyle stated.

For what purpose do you wish to see him?

We’re friends of the Commander’s. We need to speak with him over highly classified information that may be to his benefit.

Steven snorted and replied, I highly doubt that!

Don’t you remember me and my uncle? I asked, pointing to Admiral Kyle. Steven studied my face for a moment before turning to my uncle to do the same.

Nope. Can’t say that I do, Steven replied. It was all very frustrating to have to sit here and argue with someone who clearly wasn’t going to let us through. Just as we were about to protest his lack of memory, an older man stepped through the flap of the tent. It’s time for you all to leave before I make you leave, Steven threatened, oblivious to his leader standing behind him. I could not wait to see his face when he turned to see Commander Culp behind him.

Come now, Steven. Can’t you see that these fine people are friends of mine? Have you lost all memory of your former comrades at arms? Commander Culp asked him. Steven whirled around, surprised that the old man had found a hole in his attentiveness to his job. He was not stupid, though. He knew his place.

Of course, sir, Steven replied, stepping aside to let us go by. Commander Culp motioned for us to follow him inside. We happily obliged.

There was room for all of us in his tent, but it lacked the number of chairs to seat us all. There were only five chairs, one being a luscious, black, puffy chair sitting behind a desk. Commander Culp took his chair without a look in our direction and said, "Things are at a minimum here. You’ll have
