The Angel Of Death

About this ebook
Alex leads an odd life for a teenager. He would rather read than watch TV, rather run than sit around, and rather sleep in a tree than a bed. Assuming he’s reading classified documents, running from people shooting at him, and sleeping while being hunted down. Alex is an assassin, and so much more besides.
When he finds himself caught in the middle of a plot to kill every human being on earth, his admittedly convoluted sense of morals kicks in. But to save all humans, he must lose his humanity.
Prophecy tells of a boy like him. A trained killer who must use his abilities for the sake of good. Prophecy tells he will help the world fight back against the evil that plagues them. Prophecy tells that he will be: the Angel of Death.

Chapter 1
Are you ready for this, kid?
Of course I’m ready,
dear God was he ready, And quit calling me kid, you can’t be much older than I am!
This got a smile out of him. At least, Alex thought it was a smile. It was hard to tell through Vlad’s fiery red beard.
You’ll be a kid until you get your first kill. After that, you’ll be part of the family. But until then, you could be a sixty year old man, and I’d still call you a kid. Now, get moving!
Vlad’s regular speaking voice was loud, so when he shouted, Alex was physically shaken.
He fired the grappling hook to the roof of the other building. It was an old brick building that was a police station in the seventies or eighties.
Alex drew his knife, then prepared to swing across. The client was supposed to open the second story window on the far right side and then leave, but Alex could see that the window was only part way open, and that there was a guard, a couple of feet from it.
Alex went perpendicular to the wall and shot through the opening. He placed his feet right into the back of the guard’s neck, and thought he heard a slight crack. He flipped off and landed almost silently, then caught the body before it hit the floor. He slit the throat, just in case.
Just like Vlad taught me, perfect,
he thought to himself, then surveyed the hall.
There was a guard with his back to him about ten feet down the hall, and two more having a smoke by the window at the other end, next to the stairs.
Alex put his knife in his left hand and crept quietly to the next guard. He flipped over the guards head, stabbing him in the heart and drawing his pistol at the same time. He put two .45 rounds in the head of the guard on the left, and one in the chest of the other. The one on the right started to get up. Damn, body armor. He put another in the guards head, then advanced to the stairs.
Two more guards were coming around the corner of the stairwell. He shot the first one—who looked more experienced—in the head. He aimed at the second guard’s head, pulled the trigger, and … click.
Shit,
Alex threw the pistol at the guard, leaving him dazed. He probably didn’t even have to do that, since he could smell the man’s urine from here. Better safe than dead.
Alex used the time the guard was stunned to throw his knife into the guard’s throat. He leaped down to the bodies, took out his knife, and threw it sideways into the eye of the next guard coming up. The guard was wearing a helmet and sunglasses, but they were better at protecting from UV rays than Solingen steel.
This guard fell backwards onto the next one coming up, giving Alex time to wonder why he was wearing sunglasses, indoors, at night. Then he saw it, right by his feet. Flash-Bang.
He kicked it down the steps, right into the face of the next guard. Just then it went off, stunning everyone, but mostly the guards. This gave him the opportunity to pick up an MP5. He put three rounds into the next two guards, then made his way down the stairs. On the first floor, he was blinded by bright lights, then hit by Flash-Bangs. He thought he was going to hurl.
So,
said his target, a Yakuza leader named Raizen, You finally arriv…
Alex opened fire then, unloading the rest of the clip and jumping up the stairs to retrieve another. He waited for return fire, but none came. He took a small mirror from his belt and looked around the room. All the guards were dead, and so was Raizen.
Not bad, for your first time,
Vlad was right behind him, and Alex almost jumped out of his skin.
In between gasps he said, Thanks … I think.
Live it up while you can. That’s probably the highest praise you are going to get from me,
Vlad snickered. Now,
Vlad’s voice became instantly serious, Are you ready to meet your new family?
Alex’s heart was pounding in his throat. He’d been waiting for this for so long. He’d imagined this so many times.
… Well? I’ve set up a bomb to blow the place, so if you don’t decide quick, I’ll leave you here.
That wasn’t quite how he had pictured it, Uh, y-yes. Y-yes of course,
he stuttered.
Then come on, the timer has about a minute left on it.
As they were flying across the rooftops, Vlad wondering how Alex would turn out, and Alex hoping Vlad hadn’t gone too crazy with the explosives.
He had.
Chapter 2
Welcome ki… Alex, to the home of the Crimson Angels.
They were standing in front of a rundown house—more of a shack really—in the worst part of town. This is the home of the great Crimson Angels?
He couldn’t keep the disappointment out of his voice.
Well, our chapter anyway. And this isn’t actually our home, just the grimy shell that keeps people away. Come,
he said, as they went inside the small house, then down a trapdoor under the carpet. They were in a vast cave which appeared to run under half the city. Then Alex noticed a ridiculously large guy pointing an even more ridiculously large gun at him.
Halt! Who the hell … Oh, Vlad. So, is this the new guy?
It was ridiculous, the guy’s biceps had to be bigger than Alex’s head!
Yep. Alex, this is Oliver. Gatekeeper, contract assigner, and the best damn chef this side of the city,
Alex thought about shaking Oliver’s hand, but decided against it.
You forgot one thing,
Oliver said.
Vlad looked up, Hmm? Oh, Right. He’s also my brother.
Thanks for the backhanded compliment, about the chef thing, but this is the underground side of the city. I’m the only chef here.
Alex could only see the resemblance in the way they smirked.
What’s the deal with the ‘Halt!’ thing anyway?
Vlad looked ridiculous when he was confused.
Eh, thought it would be a nice change from the regular ‘stop’ or ‘don’t move.’ If I can find a big enough stick I was thinking about trying the whole, ‘You, shall not, pass!!!’ thing,
Oliver looked just as ridiculous as if you pictured him in a wizard’s robes. Maybe they had more in common than Alex originally thought.
Humph. Well Alex, in ya go,
Oliver opened the gate, and Alex stepped into the place he would forever refer to with one word.
Home.
The cavern wasn’t as big as Alex had first thought. No, it was much bigger. The actual Crimson Angels base was enormous, yet only took up a thousandth of it; it was a 10,000 square foot facility with seven stories.
This place is incredible!
Meeting God would have sounded less exciting compared to seeing this place, given the amount of awe in Alex’s voice.
You think this is great? You should see headquarters. It makes this place look like the house upstairs,
Vlad had done his little appearing act again, but this time Alex didn’t even flinch. One of his greatest lessons of his seventeen years of life was that you can only be surprised by something once, or else it becomes a weakness.
Now that your jaw has left the premises of your feet, let me introduce you to the other members of our little family,
Vlad walked to the main building, with Alex close on his heels.
Vlad slowed down a little to say, Angelus de Letum quaere auctoritas.
Alex was confused until he noticed the voice lock. Then he understood that Vlad had said the password. Now if he could only understand the password itself.
Well, Vlad had said once that the only way to get answers was to ask questions, What language was that? And what did you say?
That was Latin, and I said ‘Angel of Death seeks protection.’
I didn’t think anyone spoke … Latin … any … more,
he tried to stop himself, but it was a little too late.
Why do you think we use it stupid?
another man, maybe a couple years older than Vlad walked up to them. That was a rhetorical question,
he said when Alex began to think of something to say.
Alex, this is Conrad, our equipment manager and engineer,
based on the look on Vlad’s face, Alex guessed that Conrad was like this to everyone.
I’ll be giving you supplies for your contracts. Don’t worry, I may hate your guts, but I’ll have quadruple-checked everything before giving it to you.
He then started walking away, but before he could put his foot down Alex knew he wasn’t a bad guy.
That pretty young lady over there is Alice,
Vlad pointed to
