      Alex had hunted the Devil his whole life. He watched it happen, the killing of his family and friends, the burning of his village. He watched the smoke leave their lifeless bodies as they were burned.

              He vowed never again. He never wanted to live through that again. See that again.

              He cringed at the memory still embedded in his mind. It was like that most nights, the nightmares and the sweating and the terror still lingering behind. 6 years ago today, the slaughter of the century happened .

              Alex sat up, the taste of blood choking him. It wasn’t uncommon, the taste and smell were normal to him now but this time, it became an ambition. A goal, he needed to kill that imp that called himself their King.

              He swept from his bed, cotton sweats clinging to his thigh from the sweat but ignored it as he pulled on a simple sleeveless lace-up shirt and made way hastily down the corridor, black socks sticking to the stone floor as he avoided women carrying towels or baskets of some kind, probably filled with crossbows or swords that needed to be cleaned and polished.

              His jog slow ed to a walk as he approached a maid he knew well, one before his family was killed.

              Yelana, is Abagail up yet?

      Yelena was his mother's best friend and took him in when the incident happened. She joined The Cause a few years before his family was killed and when she took him in, he joined too.

      The Cause was formed before Alex was born, an organization dedicated to overthrowing and killing the   Devil .  To put a new Goddess on the throne to rule them, though they were hard to come by. Everyone believed the   Devil  killed their Queen, she would never leave them to this fool that only wanted power, but Alex liked to study the facts. There was nobody, no witnesses to the death or assassination of some kind. She couldn’t have just disappeared, she wouldn’t. So, what happened?

      She hasn’t come out of her room yet, but I wouldn’t check on her. I know she had a boy last night with her after supper.
