    About the Author

    Chapter One

T he hunt has begun, my lord.

Kell wiped his hand over his tired eyes and groaned. "Desmond, how many times have I told you to drop the my lord schtick."

    It’s a habit, sir.

We’ve long been out of the age of formalities, look around you. You use a smartphone for the sake of the gods, I think you can learn to just call me Kell.

    Yes, sir.

Kell squeezed his eyes shut and silently counted to ten before addressing his right-hand man, or dragon as the case may be. Who’s the target?

    Another feral beast.

That caught his attention. Kell leaned forward. The Council has already apprehended twenty-four ferals in the past month. Desmon nodded but stayed silent. So this is another round-up then? I’ll sit it out.

Sir, you sat out all the others. It’s starting to look like you don’t care.

I don’t. He snorted a laugh, I’m not here to capture freaks for the Council’s private zoo of curiosities.

    But sir—

I said no, Desmond. Come back when you have something good.

Desmond shifted his weight back and forth causing his heavy boots to make a scuffing noise against the granite floor. Sir.

    What? Kell snapped.

    This isn’t a capture mission. It’s a kill order.

A slow grin spread over Kell’s face, letting his fangs peek out from behind his lips. Finally, something fun to do around here.

I’ll grab your weapons, the briefing is on your desk.

Without another word, Desmond left the room with a little bit more pep in his step than he’d previously had. Grabbing the dossier from his desk Kell scanned the first page. Blah, blah, blah, bureaucratic bullshit, he muttered and then turned the page to the target’s info. Bingo.

He took mental notes of the scant information the Council had gathered through their spy network. The target was more than likely female, he or she had only been turned about a week ago and had already racked up ten deaths, three maimings, and two incidents of being mistaken as a peeping tom by the humans. Well, haven’t we been busy, little beast?

The last known sighting of them was less than four hours ago and it just happened to be right smack dab in the middle of Kell’s territory. He grinned. No wonder the Council wanted him in on this, no other vampire would dare move that deep into his domain. A long life span, wealth, and a reputation as a vampire who hunts and kills his own kind did have its perks. No one would come poking around in his territory and Kell would get to do what he did best. Kill.

Kell strolled through the alleyways of his district in pursuit of the creature. They moved with precision, almost as if they knew they were being hunted, but that would be impossible. He’d read the previous twenty-four reports about the feral vampires that were being set loose on the city. They were nothing more than glorified animals, with no thought process, no logic, just plain and simple fear and hunger. If the reports were true it should have taken him less than thirty minutes to get a beat on the creature.

Yet, here he was, two hours into this debacle and he barely had a scent trail up until a few blocks back. The wind had kicked up in just the right direction and now the ferals would have no escape. He would at least be kind, he would offer his prey a swift death, which is far more than a filthy mongrel like them deserved. But Kell could be merciful, it’s not like the creature asked to be turned. He paused in his thought to wonder— What if they had asked?

I’ve got you now, pet. He whispered as the scent grew stronger. He inhaled again and something else sent his senses roaring. Blood. Lots of blood. Shit.

Desmond’s voice cracked over Kell’s earpiece. Is there a problem, sir?

    It found another victim.

Desmond chuckled. Well, I guess you better hurry.

No shit, dragon. I’m working on it. Kell grabbed the earpiece and tossed it on the ground as he ran. That damn dragon could make his snarky comments to the asphalt, he didn’t have the time to sit there and banter.

Rounding the nearest corner Kell pulled up short and took a deep breath. It was here, in the darkness. He could make out the shape. He could see the slight red glow of the eyes. Its body stood hunkered over something held in its arms. Kell’s jaw tightened. I see you, pet. Drop the human.

The body dropped to the ground with an unceremonious thud. To Kell’s relief, the human on the ground wasn’t dead. At least, not yet. They made a whimpering sound and he could hear a faint heartbeat. The creature on the other hand was not quiet, they let out a banshee scream that could wake the dead and Kell instinctively grabbed the gun on his hip.

I will make this as painless as possible for you. It’s not your fault you’ve been turned into an abomination.

The creature took a step forward but remained cloaked in darkness. It snarled in response.

Kell took that as a big old fuck you to his offer of civility. All right, if you want to make it difficult, then let’s go. It’s been a long time since I’ve actually had to get my hands dirty.

A foot slid out of the shadows, bare and tanned, followed
