Dare To Believe - Dr. Marlon Husbands

The word, ‘dare’ is a verb which speaks to the courage needed to do something. The operative word here for me is ‘needed’ and when it comes to the supernatural, we need to have courage to live in it. We need to have courage to push past our fleshly tendency to analyze, rationalize, or even fear the thought of the supernatural being in us.

Furthermore, ‘dare’ may mean, to challenge somebody to do something, usually something dangerous or frightening (Encarta online Dictionary). For me, this is the sum total of an understanding of the concept. As children of God, we must, therefore, be bold in making this way of thinking and believing our daily occupation. That’s it right there! That’s the point that requires courage. In such a disposition, we would find skepticism, doubt and wonder from those with differing views. Nevertheless, let us be encouraged! There are more with us who believe than those who may disbelieve.

We must dare to believe that as born-again believers in Christ, we are more ‘supernatural’ in being than natural. After all, that is what ‘born again’ implies - taking off the natural appetites of the flesh and being clothed with the Divine Spirit. Jesus made this point when confronted by Nicodemus, a prominent Pharisee and member of the then Sanhedrin Council:

Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again. How can someone be born when they are old? Nicodemus asked. Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born! Jesus answered, Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ (John 3: 3-7 NIV)

The phrase ‘born again’ literally means born from above. Nicodemus had a real need. He needed a spiritual or supernatural transformation. Being born again is an act of God whereby eternal life is imparted to the person who believes, hence, making him divinely able in his heart and life to live and walk as Jesus did – supernaturally! The Apostle Paul in Ephesians 2:1 (NKJV) says, And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins. Sinners are spiritually ‘dead’. When they receive spiritual life through faith in Christ, the Bible likens it to a rebirth – to a ‘super’ move of God in the life and heart of ‘natural’ man. As believers, this is our first encounter with the supernatural.

As we prepare our hearts for such a move, join me as we make this short declaration over our lives:

    DECLARATION

Father, let the words of this book and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Lord, You are my Strength. You are my Redeemer.

Thank you for strengthening me today. Thank you for having strengthened me today.

Thank you for allowing your Holy Spirit to take the preeminence continually in my life.

As I meditate, as I reflect, as I engage, take the honour; take the glory.

I predispose my heart to change. I predispose my attitude to listening… for change.

I predispose my touch to change. I predispose my language to change.

I predispose my unhealthy habits to change. I predispose my sinful practices to change.

I predispose my unhealthy way of thinking to change.

I affirm, right now, that changed people change people. I thank You that I am changed.

I thank You that from today I will begin, by the grace of God, to change others.

I thank You today for every grace and every mercy on my heart and on my life.

In the name of Jesus Christ

    AMEN!!!!

DESIGNED TO WALK IN THE SUPERNATURAL

As we prepare our lives for change, I declare, by the Spirit of God, that we have been endowed to walk in the supernatural. No devil can convince us otherwise! God has designed us, appointed us and called us to operate in the supernatural.

God has designed us, appointed us and called us to operate in the supernatural

    What is the supernatural?

The ‘supernatural’ occurs when God, who is ‘DIVINE’ (Super) and man who is ‘NATURAL’ are brought together at man’s request for God’s assistance and in obedience to God’s directive to live according to His Word. In short, it is when the ‘super’ of God’s divinity blends into the naturalness of man’s being effecting an ‘above natural’ result for the glory of God. This may be otherwise described as the miraculous.

Now, God is not supernatural. Anyone who says that God is ‘supernatural’ would not be exactly correct. God does the supernatural, but there’s no ‘naturalness’ in Him. John the Apostle describes Him as ‘Spirit’ - God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). This speaks to God being without body, immaterial, without material composition, invisible and as a result, is everywhere, pure and without sin. Simply put, God is just … SUPER! To say that there is naturalness in God is to reduce Him to a being with capacity to manifest the sinfulness of the human nature.

The Bible says, He [Jesus] was found in fashion as a man… (Philippians 2:8) but even though God, through Jesus, took on human form and was tempted in like manner as we are, there is no indication that He could have sinned. Sin was foreign to Him as He walked and lived in this earth. Yes, I know some of us may ask, but if sin were ‘foreign’ to Jesus, why would He have been tempted according to Matthew 4:1 and Hebrews 4:15?

Actually, I questioned this phenomenon until the Holy Spirit revealed what I am about to share:

The word ‘fashion’ means figure, deportment, attributes – this says to me that Jesus walked and stood in the posture of a man; He bore a similar demeanour, taking on the innocent infirmities of man’s nature. He needed food, shelter and clothing as we do and was subject to suffering. None of these speak to man’s sinfully natural desires or appetites being alive in Jesus Christ.

Jesus’ divinity (lack of sinfully natural appetites) is confirmed by the fact that God was His literal Father, even as Mary was His literal Mother. The Bible says that Jesus is the only begotten Son of the Father:

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

    (1 John 4:9)

‘Begotten’ is another term for, ‘single of its kind’ and viewed in relation to the blood or nature children may inherit from their parents. Note with me here that a human being’s soul takes on the sin nature the moment the man’s sperm meets the woman’s egg, that is, at conception. What is important to note is that the child’s ‘sin-nature’ is the embodiment of the father’s sperm more so than the mother’s egg. The Bible makes it clear that the sins of the father and not the mother shall follow the children:

…for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me

    (Exodus 20:5)

Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation

    (Exodus 34:7)

I believe that it was mainly on the heels of the father’s doing that the curse entered the human race. Interestingly enough, it was at the point of Adam’s sin in Genesis chapter 3 that God stepped in and pronounced punishment on the human race:

…And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, [at which point God did nothing]and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat (this is when God stepped in and pronounced judgment

And the LORD God called unto [ADAM], and said unto him, where art thou?

    (Genesis 3: 6-7)

It is fair to conclude that the burden of sin was the result of man’s doing first; hence, the responsibility of sin entering the world fell on him, thus making him the carrier of the ‘sin-cursed’ nature. God was deliberate in not allowing a natural man to be the suppository of the life-giving element in Mary when He initiated the birth of His Son by the power of the Holy Spirit. In a real sense and without being sacrilegious, we may conclude that God mysteriously allowed His life-giving matter (call it sperm, if we may) to enter Mary at her time of ovulation. This was intended to bring into existence His sacrifice for our rescue from sin and separation from Him, whereby, making provision for this ‘New’ or ‘Super’ birth. Hence, the Holy Spirit (God-Divine), having gone with Mary (natural), was a fitting display of supernatural expression. Herein lies the mystery.

That is why when man is involved in any move of God that seems confusing, the likelihood of God being marginalized is there. But in truth and in fact, it is not God who should be marginalized, it is man. The element of the natural and chance for error that comes with any supernatural move is in us and not in God. The Bible says in Psalm 51: 5, Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. When there is a combination, a coming together of ‘Super’ with ‘natural’, any erring must be on the part of the ‘natural’, never on the part of the ‘Super’!

We need to stop seeing ourselves first as natural beings but see ourselves first as supernatural beings

Having put that in perspective, let’s look at the Word of God and understand that when we look at ourselves in the mirror, we need to stop seeing ourselves first as natural beings but see ourselves first as supernatural beings that live under submission and guidance of our ‘Super-God’. We need to see ourselves as being capable of supernatural things. For example, we can display supernatural mercy; we can manifest supernatural forgiveness.

One person that confirms such supernatural mercy and forgiveness is Joseph (Genesis 37:23-36), who was lied on, rejected, ill-treated, stripped of his coat of many colors, thrown into a pit, left to die by his own brothers and was later sold into Egypt by Medianites because of jealousy. While in Egypt, he was stripped of his power and position of influence in Potiphar’s army and cast into prison, after being lied on again, this time by Potiphar’s wife. After suffering all this humiliation following the initial actions of his brothers, Joseph was able to supernaturally demonstrate mercy and forgiveness, having reached the pinnacle of power as the second most powerful man in Egypt. Here, Joseph had the power to punish the same brothers who left him for dead but in return said something that has blown my mind for decades. Instead of prison or death, Joseph offered his brothers life and love saying, …for God hath made me forget all my toil, and my father’s house (Genesis 41:51). The Spirit of God must have supernaturally rested upon Joseph that day enabling him to give mercy and forgiveness to his brothers, even as He rested upon him with wisdom and judgment to successfully bring Egypt out of severe famine.

Another such unfolding was with Stephen in the book of Acts 7: 57-60:

Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, And cast him out of the city… And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

This chapter contains the defence of Stephen before the Sanhedrin, or great council of the Jews. Stephen was accused of blasphemy in speaking against everything held sacred among the Jews (against the institutions of Moses and the temple). It certainly did not go down well with these religious zealots and as a result, he suffered death at their hands. The point of ‘supernatural interest’ for us though, is the attitude of Stephen and his heart’s true disposition at this public humiliation and execution. As they angrily and viciously threw their rocks in hatred, imagine the spite with which they must have thrown them, but Stephen in his supernatural element fell to his knees and with a loud voice – a voice of passion, love and intensity said, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.

Frankly speaking, no man in his own strength can accomplish this feat. Normally, people would be pitiful, angry, hateful, tearful and fearful all in one. But here, we have a man of God, upon whom the Spirit of God rested and who, beyond mere human ability, was able to manifest supernatural mercy and forgiveness; for man, with his natural sin-cursed tendencies, would find it IMPOSSIBLE to forgive in such situations
