    Chapter 1: Introduction

Jaipur is the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is the largest city in Rajasthan. Jaipur is also called the Pink city. When the British ruled India, the city of Jaipur was the capital of the Princely State of Jaipur.

The city of Jaipur was founded on 18th of November in the year 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. He was the ruler of Amber. The population of the present city of Jaipur is more than four million.

More than half of the land in Rajasthan is covered by the desert. Jaipur was the first planned city of India. The Princely rulers of the city left no stone unturned to make this city beautiful. They built various monuments and palaces to add to the royal glory of Jaipur. The structures and monuments in the city of Jaipur reflect the taste of the Rajputs and the Royal families.

At present the city of Jaipur is a major business centre. It is a metropolitan city with all the requisites needed to make it a metropolitan city. Most of the business houses in Jaipur are owned by the local Marwari businessmen.

Among the pre-modern Indian cities, Jaipur has its distinct state. The city has wide roads and a fine regularity of streets. The streets have been laid out into sex sectors which are separate from main roads. The broad streets are about 111 feet in width. There are also gridded streets.

There is a very huge and sprawling palace complex called Hawa Mahal, with formal gardens, and a small lake. King Sawai Jai Singh II lived in Nahargarh Fort. It is on top of a hill in the northwest corner of the city.

Then there is an observatory called Jantar Mantar in local language. Jantar Mantar has its place in the World Heritage Sites.

Jaipur is one of the most famous tourist attractions in India and every year millions of tourists from about 150 countries visit this beautiful city.
