INTRODUCTION: GAINING THAT INNOVATIVE EDGE
Gaining that innovative edge enables you to come up with more and better ideas. It lets you to make those creative, intuitive leaps. It helps you think of a range of alternatives, so you can make the best, most profitable and productive solutions.
With that innovative edge you can do the following:
Look at information in new ways;
Easily combine information from different fields;
Comfortably challenge assumptions and premises;
Hear new valuable information you initially disagree with, since you know how to put your initial opinions on a shelf;
Come up with effective alternatives and new possibilities quickly;
Adopt new ways of thinking and doing;
See challenges, difficulties, and problems as opportunities to explore new paths to action.
GAIN THAT INNOVATIVE EDGE is dedicated to helping you achieve this way of being, thinking and acting in your business, work, or life. The exercises will help you better visualize possibilities, limber up your brain to think more fluidly, and get in touch with your inner creative force to make those innovative intuitive leaps.
CHAPTER 1: NEW IDEA POWER
The essence of human nature is creativity and change – the evolutionary key that has led to today’s revolutionary change. We see human ability evolve faster and faster as our technology leaps ahead, changing our human brainpower as it does. Researchers are even finding transformations in the human brain, since using our creativity and innovation to create new technology devices, increase our mental capacities, too.
In other words, as our ever-changing environment undergoes more rapid changes, our creativity not only helps us respond to and influence that change, but it prepares us to better adapt to future changes with even more bursts of creativity. Thus, the creative force becomes an engine of exponential change – creating even more possibilities for creativity as it zooms ahead. Creative potentials create even more expanding creative possibilities, like an ever-expanding origami. Each series of folds doubles and doubles again, and the speed of doubling doubles as well. Think of the process like an expanding sun that picks up even more intense power as it expands.
This process not only lets us remake the world around us but ourselves – again and again, so we best fit the new conditions or shape those conditions to fit ourselves. By upping your awareness, you can better perceive these current conditions and shifts. Then, decide whether it’s best to change the conditions you can alter – or change yourself.
Applying Your Creativity and Ability for Innovation
You can apply your inner creativity and ability for innovation in a myriad of ways. Plus use your creativity to think of even more possibilities.
One way to apply your creative ability is to think of more efficient and productive ways of doing things. At work this will help you get the job done faster and better. For example, if you design new and better policies and procedures for your office or work group, everyone will better understand what to do and how to do it. There will be fewer disruptive conflicts, because people don’t know what to do or disagree about how to do something and who should do it.
Or say you are at home. Coming up with these more efficient and productive approaches will help you get everyday chores done faster, leaving you more time to kick back and enjoy.
Another application is to create new useful and profitable products and businesses. Just think. You could have the next Whoosh Ball; the next Napster; the next big doll craze. These and many products and businesses that made millions were initiated by people who started in their homes with a good idea. Shawn Fanning, for instance, was only 19 when he started Napster with the help of his uncle. The designer of the popular Soul Dolls began making them in her kitchen.
Having better ideas can also help you provide better leadership and direction. For instance, at the office, use your creativity to come up with new strategies for the months ahead, whether you are running a company, leading a department, or just reorganizing a file cabinet. In your personal life, suggest ways to plan a family gathering or where to go for a fun time.
Being more creative and innovative can additionally help you reshape yourself and what you do. Then, use this persona to open doors to new opportunities. That’s what Margie, an assistant office manager, did. She felt stepped on in the office and not taken seriously, because she had a bland colorless personality, and she looked and dressed the part, in the plain, cool colored suits she usually wore. She didn’t speak up at meetings and was
