Author, Lynda Charow, like her main character Victoria is a firm believer that anything that you put your mind to you can achieve. She worked her way through college to receive a B.S. degree in Broadcasting from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. A month after graduating she gave birth to her daughter, Victoria Lyn. As an independent producer, in the mid-1990's, she co-produced a number of historical documentaries with the WDIV-TV 4, the Detroit NBC affiliate. The research became a springboard for the "Legends of the Lakes" book. Her Emmy award winning documentary "Haunted Legends of Old Detroit" provided some of the inspiration for the legends incorporated in that book. "The Snow Day" was inspired by photos that Victoria's Dad had shared from his days in college up at Michigan Technoligical University in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The "Venetian Festival" was based on some of the experiences that the family had by participating in the cardboard boat races in the annual festival sponsored by the Nautical Mile Merchant Association. "Daylight at Night" was inspired when the fireworks in the city were actually cancelled due to the lack of funds. Lynda has recently completed a documentary "Building on Faith: The Historic Churches of Detroit". DVD Copies of the program are available for purchase for $20.Lynda is also the event director for the Shores-Pointes Adventure Triathlon. She is a triathlete herself and decided to bring this kind of event to her city, St. Clair Shores. The second annual event was held on July 21, 2012 at Blossom Heath Park. The event web site is www.shorespointestri.com. She also maintains a Facebook page where photos of the events have been posted and additional event information is constantly updated.

St. Clair Shores is a cozy coastal town on Lake Saint Clair, Michigan. It is nuzzled between the Detroit River and Lake Huron. This is where the bubbly twelve year old Victoria, better known to her friends as Tori, lives.

Her hometown has fourteen miles of canals and lakefront homes. It is a truly nautical city where just about everyone has a boat tied up in the canal or is in a slot over at one of the many marinas. The warm summer days bring boaters into the shallow waters of the bays where they drop anchor and the water is filled with swimmers splashing and around.

Out in the middle of the lake there are several islands that are great for day trips out on the boat. It’s a virtual tropical get away in the middle of the Midwest.

Growing up this environment made it easy for Tori to become a water rat. She took every opportunity she got to go swimming, snorkeling, boating, kayaking, parasailing, you name it. If it had to do with the water, she was all for it.

Today was the last day of school. Tori happily walked home with her friends. They were excited that school was out and they could spend their long summer days swimming in the lake and lazing around all day. But, a wrench had been thrown into that plan. They heard at school that the city’s annual fireworks display had been cancelled due to a lack of funds.

For the Fourth of July holiday, Tori and her family normally took their boat out to Memorial Park to watch the fireworks from the water. It provided an up close view of the beautiful flashes of light that danced across the sky and the thundering vibrations of the booms.

Tori and her friends, Alex, Jeana, Mike and Mary sat on the picnic table under the weeping willow tree at the park at the end of Tori’s street. They gazed out over the lake and envisioned the Fourth of July fireworks in the slowly drifting puffy white clouds that filled the afternoon sky.

There must be something that we can do to help raise the rest of the money needed to put on the fireworks, Tori said.

My Dad was on the committee to get funds from the businesses. No one seems to have the money this year, Mary sighed.

It just won’t be the Fourth of July without fireworks, Mike said. We could go to another city and watch them, but I’d rather see them here over our lake.

So, what are we going to do about it? Tori asked.

We could have car washes and bake sales like we do for cheerleading, Jeana chimed in.

How much money does that raise? Mary asked skeptically.

We usually make a couple hundred on a good day. Jeana replied. How
