Linda had just closed her locker when she felt them come up behind her. She turned slowly to see that the head cheerleader Angel and two of her cohorts, Gretchen and Holly, surrounded her, trapping her against the wall. Six feet of sculpted blonde perfection, Angel leaned over her gazing like a big cat at her prey. Though somewhat shorter, her friends seemed near copies of her save for Gretchen's brunette hair, all of them cold-eyed towers of lean, toned muscle. Due to them being late for class, the hall was mostly empty, and those few stragglers who passed by didn't give them a second look.

Linda swallowed. Hi, Angel. What's up?

Angel one-arm-shoved her against the lockers. Don't 'what's up' me, you fat little troll! You know what. You have some nerve to show me up with those dinosaur models after I spent a whole twenty minutes searching and printing out pictures for my presentation.

Stay calm, Linda told herself. You're not fat. You're not. You only weigh one hundred thirty pounds. You just have a round face, that's all. How was I supposed to know your project was going to be about the exact same dinosaurs, too?

Oh, I don't know. Maybe you overheard me talking about it and decided to make yourself look smart at my expense. Angel sneered. It won't help you, though. Good looking girls like me succeed in life. Fat little dorks like you? You'll probably end up as some boring professor teaching stuff that nobody gives a shit about after they graduate for life... at best.

Linda felt her face grow hot. She wouldn't normally have talked back, but she was in a particularly poor mood and the words of ire simmering in her head burst free. Yeah? Well maybe I think you're jealous that I'm smarter than you.

If she'd had the sense at the moment to fear angering Angel, she might have felt relief at the cheerleader's unperturbed reaction. Instead, each word just made her madder. Me, jealous of you? You're not even smarter than me, I bet. I just don't have to try, unlike you. You try so hard, and for so very little. Me, I don't have to do anything but be myself and everybody loves me. But you? You look like you're well on your way to looking like your fat ugly grandma and no guy's going to want you.

    Linda shook
