About this ebook

HER LAST SCREAM, A FOOL'S SACRIFICE
HOW MUCH ARE YOU READY TO PAY FOR LOVE?

Cassie has discovered that Paulo is a sex predator for the Incubi in her Nightmare. He admits to seducing her and her girlfriends. He regrets none of it because he is a human incubus – except what he has done to hurt her. For her to be safe, he will gladly do anything.

But whether a man, a hybrid, or demon spawn, he can’t bear her hate. For the first time in his immortal life he tells a human all despite fearing her judgment and the Incubi’s fury. And Cassie’s hatred can’t stay strong, whether she is under his spell, or is bound by true love.

Paulo endangers all for her and when the Nightmare comes again, it takes them both. But only Cassie returns. Every night, her torture is worsened by hearing his screams through the Darkness, tearing her apart.

It may prove to be the last thing to make her surrender to the Incubi. But can giving yourself in the place of the one you love be only a fool’s love to end in pain? Or will it be a truly worthwhile sacrifice?

“I ... I’m not yours.”

There was another sharp, piercing male scream, long and filled with pain followed by uncontrollable sobbing.

“Stop hurting him! He’s not yours either!”

It stared at her a long while, its breath adding to the foul stench of the place, as she repeatedly felt that fetid breath hot upon her completely exposed, naked and sweating body. She dimly wondered if it could think.

“Join ushsss and it will ssstop. Hisssh pain will ssstop. Are you ourssss?”

Lily Green

Lily Green is 41, divorced, and lives in Pacific Heights, San Francisco. She has two sons—Michael, 22 and Todd, 18. Lily has a dark past—she was adopted as a child by a well-meaning, homey schoolteacher and her husband, a bartender. Her adopted father abused her as a child, and in her late teens, she decided she had had enough and reported the incident both to her mom, and the local police. Her mother, instead of coming to her aid, decided to evict her. Lily, therefore, had to move into the city and fend for herself, working odd jobs to put herself through college. She married Howard, a fellow student, and father to both her sons. They parted ways when Todd was 3. Michael is in medical school—an intern—with a pre-med degree in Psychiatry. Michael resides in L.A. Todd is a student at San Francisco University, taking up Dance as his major. Both Michael and Todd are single. Her former husband is Howard, head of an architecture firm. Though he and Lily are estranged, he helps put the kids through college. Lily herself was a dance choreographer—and now teaches Development of Dance Techniques and Dance Theory—part time. She is known to date men several years her junior, as she finds most men her age or older to be “too serious” and “boring." She has a healthy appetite for sex, but finds getting into a serious relationship for long periods “a waste of time." She feels she has yet to find a man her equal both intellectually and physically. She does not believe in “love”—she defines relationships as a meeting of minds and a consensual approval of helping the other grow. Lily is into organic food and is a health and exercise buff (though mostly incidental—the exercising helps “clear her mind”). She is into “centering” and yoga. She has yet to give up smoking, though. She loves to shop but within reason. Anything excessive and lavish has to be justified, she feels. Lily is deeply into social work (she is a member of the local LGBT group as a generous donor for free HIV testing drives, among other advocacies.). She is also an advocate for animal adoption. She describes herself as “a city girl with a small-town heart."

    Chapter One

    CASSIE AND PAULO ran.

They were both suddenly alive and fully awake as they drove and drove, away from the university. And she shook her head. Instead of going away to school like she'd wanted for so long and living independently, she was running away with a man -- perhaps more demon than man. What had she done?

But for the first time since all this mess begun, something felt right. How can I explain that? It's like this is what I meant to do. Being with Paulo, running away from Paulo, saving... saving Paulo?

She remembered how obsessed Jimmy had been, how exhausted Karen had become, the bruises and abuse on Cassie's own body, and how her friends Lauren and Anne had behaved. All the evidence pointed to destruction -- she was going to hell. But for some reason, this was the first time that she felt she was going somewhere where she should go. It defied everything logical. But it was also instinctive. And how had men ever managed to conquer their instincts?

Hmm. Men. Human. Why am I thinking in the third person? Like I'm not one of them. Perhaps... after all I've been through I don't feel normal anymore. Not human.

She shook her head. Crazy thinking. Crazy. Perhaps her mind was trying to cope up, and this was the only way? On the other hand, no average human knew what she knew now, and experienced what she had experienced in the Nightmares with the Incubi, chained by their enchantments, and not be touched by something supernatural.

She sneaked a peek at her driver, at Paulo. And she sighed.

Noone who's been exposed to him can stay woefully ignorant. He was some sort of enticement demon, or a man tainted with demon DNA or blood or spirit. A human incubus. What do I know? I've never met one. He's a sex predator. No... not sex demons like the monsters in the Nightmare. I can never peg him as one. He feels too human. The demons in my dreams... she shivered inside. The real Incubi -- those are the real monsters.

"Paulo, do you remember how you started?

He turned to look at her for a long while she worried they would leave the road. But he looked back at the road and kept driving while he frowned like he was thinking very hard.

When I was born, I was soon alone, without family. But not for long.

Good. He's starting from the beginning.

I forgot my birth and my earliest memories are of being ill a lot. I wasn't strong. I was always feeling as if my body and my spirit fought. The family who took me in were poor and superstitious, and it became obvious, I guess, in the beginning that I am supernatural. I was a strange baby. They brought me to the river and threw me in the water to kill me.

He laughed, without mirth, while she sat there with the most horrific feeling she had ever felt in her heart that she couldn't even speak

I survived, of course. The river demons saved me. I survived in the forest for a while. The animals took care of me.

You remember that far into your childhood? Or babyhood? I mean... you'd be barely two if you can walk.

"But that's it. I grew fast. I was sickly and blue, but by the time I was three months old, I have the body of a two years old. And I can
