About this ebook

“Out of the Darkness” takes place five years after the end of Lynn's relationship with James and is a more optimistic story of her emergence as a strong, confident woman who takes care of herself and excels at a responsible job. She is rocked emotionally when she meets Chase, a Dominant who is involved in education in his BDSM community. Fearful of falling into the same helpless position she occupied with James, she battles her powerful attraction to Chase and is delighted when she learns that Dominance and submission can be practiced in a responsible, consensual way that enhances her life. He mentors her, teaching her many aspects of the lifestyle that she had not previously understood, and she finds herself falling in love.

DL Moss

Dimmie Moss is retired and living in SE Aurora, Colorado with her husband of 37 years. She writes using her experiences in the local BDSM community, where she has taught and mentored extensively. Her hope is that the accurate point of view within her fictional stories will give a more realistic look at that community than some other fiction has provided. Safety and consent are primary concerns for those who indulge in the more alternative parts of their sexuality and she tries to infuse those traits in her characters so that they might provide a good influence for those who want to explore it.

    Chapter 1 - The Meeting

She flew through the concourse, weaving between travelers, trying not to be irritated by the slower ones, careful to be polite as she slipped past them in an effort to be efficient. Finally, her gate came into view – empty save the two airline employees. One was just closing the boarding door and she panicked!

Wait – that’s my flight! Please!

The attractive blond spun sharply and looked at the dark haired whirlwind flying toward her. She pulled the door back as Lynn skidded to a halt and reached for her boarding pass.

"Relax. You made it. Have a nice flight.

Thank you so much Lynn said, with a heartfelt sincerity in her voice.

She had been afraid she wouldn’t make her connection in Chicago – an airport that was known for vast distances between gates. It didn’t help that her flight from Houston had been delayed, causing it to arrive a few minutes late. She prayed that her luggage had found its way on board. The last time she traveled to DC, she had to purchase clothing for her meeting since the jeans she wore to travel would have been frowned on by the Fortune 500 executives she was meeting. Accounting wasn’t the most exciting job on earth, but as an auditor, she often flew to interesting places, and took advantage of the site seeing opportunities in those far away cities.

Lynn was a social sort and met people easily. She had no qualms about going to a restaurant alone, usually finding another solo traveler to share a table with. A couple of those chance meetings had yielded friendships that lasted to this day. Her address book was full of phone numbers of friends who had said, If you ever find yourself in …, give me a call.

Not in DC though… she had done all the normal site seeing tours during her last trip and wasn’t quite as excited to be in the city, but she had packed a couple of good books, so she would pass the time happily. Her friends often told her that she liked books better than people and in some ways that was true. Books were predictable, with a beginning, middle and end, all nicely tied up in ribbon.

People were anything but. They were unpredictable and often turned out to be quite the opposite of what they originally pretended to be. Lynn didn’t understand deceit. She valued honesty and wanted everyone to be as authentic as she was. Her mind drifted back to James…

"Never lie to me. I will not tolerate it!

"She had sat at his feet, her normal position after serving him a drink. With one arm draped casually over his left leg and her legs curled under her, she absently stroked his calf with her other hand.

    Yes, Master.

Nothing was more important to James than honesty. By honesty, he meant total transparency. He owned her – her body, her mind, her thoughts – and would tolerate no equivocation. She was literally an open book.

This early training had set the path of her life. She applied tact when needed but refused to be dishonest in how she dealt with the world. Why couldn’t others do the same?

Reaching the end of the gangway, she stepped into the aircraft and made her way down the aisle. The flight was almost full and she reached the last dozen rows before she saw three empty seats. One row held a young boy, not a good choice. In another was a couple, holding hands and talking with their heads close together. She hated to intrude on their privacy. The last empty seat was next to a handsome gentleman a few years older than she and wearing a leather vest.

You look like a kindred spirit, Sir. May I sit with you?

He flashed a beautiful smile. Of course. Please do.

As she settled into the seat and fished under her for the seat belt, she expressed her thanks and tried not to disturb him more than necessary. Once settled, she stole a glance to her right. He had that handsome in a rough sort of way look, like someone who spent a great deal of time outside and maintained his fitness naturally, rather than through time in a gym. His hair was blonde, showing the natural highlights of life in the sun. He appeared to be tall, although that could be deceiving. He was wearing casual clothing under the vest… a black tshirt and jeans. She wondered if he came from her part of the country, since he wore cowboy boots

He caught her looking at him, so she began a conversation. I’m Lynn. How are you today?

He smiled and answered, Fine, but did not seem inclined to talk, so she settled into her seat and opened a book. A few pages later, it became obvious that her earlier anxiety was not going to subside enough to allow her to read and she closed it with a sigh. She looked past him and out the window, feeling that sense of restlessness that often made air travel difficult for her, and tried again.

    Do you work in DC?

He looked startled that she had spoken, but answered pleasantly. No. I’m going there to present a seminar.

    Ah… an opening! Excellent!

Interesting… may I ask the subject?

You may. He looked at her with twinkling blue eyes.

She laughed and fell into a more formal pattern of speech.

Please Sir, I would very much appreciate hearing the subject of your presentation, if it would please you to share it with me.

She tried to keep a straight face, but the look of astonishment on his face was so comical that she burst into laughter again. I apologize. I did not mean to be cheeky.

Yes, you did. And you accomplished it quite well. I’m impressed. Where did you receive your training?

The question surprised her. No, not the question so much as the way he phrased it. For a moment, she was speechless. He continued, Did I make an unfounded assumption?

No Sir. You did not. I was just surprised by your question. It has been a long time since anyone has spoken to me in this way.

Then take a moment to collect your thoughts, and decide how much you are willing to share with me.

She closed her eyes and thought about this strange turn of events. How could she have guessed that her first impression of him had been so accurate? Kindred spirit indeed! She felt that pull… that need to please… to be found pleasing. A part of her that she had buried over five years ago roared to the surface. It was like a tidal wave, strong and unstoppable. Her pulse raced and her breath came more quickly than normal. She concentrated on slowing it and suddenly realized how much time had passed. He would think her simple if she didn’t start forming coherent sentences soon.

Again, I apologize, Sir. You took me off guard. I lost my… she hesitated for a second and forced the now unfamiliar word from her lips… Master… just over five years ago. I am not accustomed to speaking of it.

    Why were you released?

It was a difficult explanation and she struggled to find a way to answer honestly but without telling the whole, painful story.

He became unavailable to me through circumstances that were beyond our control. I would not presume to bore you with the details.

He laughed. I very much doubt that anything you could do or say would bore me, but I’ll allow you to defer the explanation for now.

He turned back to the window and gazed at the wispy white clouds below them. As the silence ticked by, she regretted her decision to give an evasive answer. But, she would not speak. She was too well trained for that.

Then, in a soft voice, almost as if he were talking to himself, he began to speak. Still gazing out the window, he began. I am a teacher of sorts; a guide who tries to ease the path of others so that they are spared the pain and confusion of making mistakes that are easily corrected with a few small nougats of information. He laughed and looked into her eyes. How’s that for an equally vague answer?

She smiled and dropped her eyes. Unsure of his intent, she said nothing.

Basically, I’m going to DC to attend a conference where I have the opportunity to network and educate at least some of the hoard of people who have been drawn to our community though the gateway of the Internet.

Her silence ended. How wonderful! I’ve often thought how much easier my life could have been if there had been someone to explain all the conflicting emotions that I felt in those first years. I’d love to know more about it!

He spent the next half hour or so passionately describing the way the community had become a more open educational opportunity through organized events over the last decade. It amazed her that this man… these resources… had been accessible if only she’d known where to look. But she had been too naïve to even know what to look for! She began asking questions and he patiently answered them all, amused by her apparent innocence, despite her past relationship.

Soon, the seat belt light came on and the captain’s voice announced their imminent arrival. Her heart took a plunge. No! Not so soon! She had not begun to scratch the surface of who this man was. She did not want to reach that moment when they each went their separate ways. She felt something best described as panic rise in her.

He watched the emotions play across her face. She might as well have spoken each thought, so clearly could he read them. This girl was fascinating. He had never met such a combination of experience and naiveté. He wanted to learn more.

You never told me why you are in the city. Do you live here?

No, Sir. I am here today on business… a final meeting with the CEO of a company for whom I have just completed and audit. I decided to stay the weekend purely for pleasure.

Excellent! Then you will have time to spend with me. Are you free tonight?

Her heart soared. She wanted nothing more than to continue to get to know this exceptional man. "Yes, Sir. My meeting should end no later than 5:00pm. I am at the Hilton.

I have a suite at the Park Hyatt. Would it be too presumptive to ask you to cancel your reservations and join me there for the weekend? He continued before she could process concern over the suggestion. I came without an attendant. Due to a scheduling conflict, she is presenting elsewhere and the second bedroom in the suite will go unused if you do not agree to take it. I promise you that I will not impose myself on you in any way beyond what you desire.

No thought was needed. She would not have turned down the invitation, even without that assurance. She was mesmerized by him and knew only that she wanted to know more.

I would be pleased to join you, Sir, and provide whatever service you require during your visit.

She was suddenly embarrassed, thinking how forward that statement sounded… but resisted the urge to once again apologize.

Good. He had taken out a business card and written his cell phone number on the back.

Call me at this number when you have finished your day and I will give you further instructions.

    Yes, Sir. Thank you, Sir

With that, they retrieved their carry-on luggage and deplaned into one of the busiest airports in the US. She did not see him again.

    Chapter 2 - A New Adventure

Lynn moved like a robot through the day ahead of her. She met with the CEO, delivered her final report, answered his questions, and did everything necessary to close out the account, but her mind remained on Chase. She must have looked at his name on the card a dozen times over the course of the afternoon. She had never known anyone with that name, but it suited him. She had done as he instructed, cancelled her hotel reservation and stowed her luggage with the receptionist. She considered keeping the hotel room for the first day since she would have to pay one night’s charge as a cancellation fee anyway. That would have allowed her to shower and change from her business attire to something more attractive. As it was, the ladies room at the airport had to suffice for the change into that clothing. But, her sense of obedience would not let her take advantage of that luxury. After all, he had said cancel, so cancel is what she did.

She walked a block to a small coffee shop and ordered a latte. Sitting in a quiet corner booth, she dialed the number on the back of his card. Her throat tightened when she heard his voice, but she managed to say, Sir, this is Lynn.

Excellent. I was hoping you wouldn’t change your mind. I am in suite number 702. Come now and settle in. Then we can have dinner together.

I’ll be there in directly. Thank you, Sir.

She finished her latte, picked up her bags and left the café. A short cab ride later, she found herself at the hotel and hurried inside to the elevators before she could become nervous again. Unfortunately, before she could knock on the door, her anxiety returned.

The day had been so full of activity that she had not really had time to think about what she had agreed to. After all, she had left this life behind so long ago, hadn’t she? She pondered the question.

Although she had a few boyfriends during that time, she had never found the level of intensity she had experienced with James. They were all so… she searched for the correct word… accommodating! The men she met were professional, accomplished, successful, but they all lacked something and she could never really put her finger on what it was. They weren’t weak. Quite the contrary… they just asked her opinion about everything… where to go, what to eat, even when to have sex!

And the sex was good. She had orgasms, but it wasn’t great. Occasionally she would let her mind travel back and weave a fantasy that the man she was with would treat her like James had. In her mind, he would take the control, fuck her with abandon and not worry so much about whether it was good for her. At those times, her arousal would reach peaks that never occurred without the fantasy, and her partner would marvel at how lucky he was to have such a passionate lover. She never revealed the secret to reaching that level of passion.

For the most part, she refused to think about it herself because she had decided that her time with James had been some sort of fluke… a once in a blue moon kind of connection… and had never considered actively seeking another Master. Hell, she wouldn’t have known how to find him if she had tried. She had not researched alternative lifestyles, as Chase had called them. But it appeared that he was networked into those communities in a significant way and that presented a new open doorway of opportunity to again find what she had experienced and lost.

She took a deep breath and knocked
