About this ebook

SOMEONE’S ON A KILLING SPREE
NOT EVEN THE VERY BEST PLAYER CAN FAKE DEATH

Westside’s Fiddler was officially on hold. The theater was a crime scene.

In the beginning, Kit and Terri as well as the other cops are all sure they got the killer of Littleton behind bars. But more bodies turned up in the theatre, in a bloodbath in what looks to be an accidental killing.

When Terri and Kit got into the theatre, Terri immediately realized nothing in it was accidental. Someone planned the planks to fall exactly when they did. Most of the female actors are dead.

It has become a game of hide and seek and it seems like the cops are losing it with more and more victims getting involved. All the players are dwindling in numbers until a few remains, and one of them is Terri. Kit suspects that if the killer isn’t caught in time, whoever it is would eventually get to her. He has fallen in love with her, and he will do everything he can to save her.

EXCERPT

Bloodbath was an understatement. Terri gagged at the first sight of the awful scene. The two cops got it in the neck. Their glassy eyes stared up at the ceiling, pleading for help that arrived too late to do any good. And the other girls that Ethan had alluded to were out of costume and just as dead.

Winters saw Kit and hurried towards him. He stopped short when he saw his hand clenched in Terri’s.

“What’s she doing here?” Winters demanded.

Terri straightened where she stood. She had every right to know exactly what was going on.

“This is my turf,” she said. “And I’m here to help.”

Winters rolled his eyes and tried to pull Kit as far away from her as possible. His hand was already cupped around Kit’s ear, and as he started to speak he realized that Terri was still at his side.

“Will you give us a moment?” Winters ordered.

How superficial of her to even think that he was the better of the two. Terri wanted to tell Winters as much when Kit left her hand. The split second of worry was replaced by all the security possible as his arm fell around her shoulders.

“She’s with me,” Kit said.

Terri had to smile at him. Kit was also brave.

“I can see that,” Winters said. “But, man, she shouldn’t be here. She’s involved. Maybe she even did this!”

Kit’s hold tightened. “Not possible. She was with me.”

Winters looked from Kit to Terri and back again. Terri rested her head against Kit’s chest. With her eyes she challenged Winters to voice any doubt of make a joke at their expense. He tried to say something as Terri waved her hand in his face.

“And it was spectacular.”

Lily Green

Lily Green is 41, divorced, and lives in Pacific Heights, San Francisco. She has two sons—Michael, 22 and Todd, 18. Lily has a dark past—she was adopted as a child by a well-meaning, homey schoolteacher and her husband, a bartender. Her adopted father abused her as a child, and in her late teens, she decided she had had enough and reported the incident both to her mom, and the local police. Her mother, instead of coming to her aid, decided to evict her. Lily, therefore, had to move into the city and fend for herself, working odd jobs to put herself through college. She married Howard, a fellow student, and father to both her sons. They parted ways when Todd was 3. Michael is in medical school—an intern—with a pre-med degree in Psychiatry. Michael resides in L.A. Todd is a student at San Francisco University, taking up Dance as his major. Both Michael and Todd are single. Her former husband is Howard, head of an architecture firm. Though he and Lily are estranged, he helps put the kids through college. Lily herself was a dance choreographer—and now teaches Development of Dance Techniques and Dance Theory—part time. She is known to date men several years her junior, as she finds most men her age or older to be “too serious” and “boring." She has a healthy appetite for sex, but finds getting into a serious relationship for long periods “a waste of time." She feels she has yet to find a man her equal both intellectually and physically. She does not believe in “love”—she defines relationships as a meeting of minds and a consensual approval of helping the other grow. Lily is into organic food and is a health and exercise buff (though mostly incidental—the exercising helps “clear her mind”). She is into “centering” and yoga. She has yet to give up smoking, though. She loves to shop but within reason. Anything excessive and lavish has to be justified, she feels. Lily is deeply into social work (she is a member of the local LGBT group as a generous donor for free HIV testing drives, among other advocacies.). She is also an advocate for animal adoption. She describes herself as “a city girl with a small-town heart."

Westside's Fiddler was officially on hold. The theater was a crime scene. Terri wondered if Marcus was more distressed at being taken in for further questioning or the thought of his precious bales of hay adorned in yellow tape.

Either way, she was to blame.

    For everything.

Terri sat in her apartment in her pajama bottoms and a sweatshirt. Her hair was bound behind her neck in a sloppy ponytail. She stared at the ceiling.

He had tried to apologize. His eyes danced below his glasses as he handed her the list. She could have been the bigger person and given him a gentle smirk. It was a chance to keep playing detective and slap him again. Given the chance, she would have been more playful in her attack. But she just left.

Her phone beeped, and she read a text from Ethan. A few of the other girls were making a scene about their personal belongings still trapped in the theater, and an arrangement was made. Two of the female officers would allow them entry to collect their crap and go.

If you need something, you should go.

What use was her stage makeup now?

She started a pot of coffee when there was a light rap on her door. Was Ethan waiting on the other side when he drafted his text? Had he knocked in response to her lack of an answer? She couldn't think of anyone else who'd want to call on her? Even the actors she hadn't accused must view her as something of a turncoat. She'd done it for him, and it was all for nothing.

    She looked through the peephole.

    Kit.

Terri hesitated before undoing the deadbolt and loosening the latch. The door opened on Kit in a white button down and khakis and a simple brown jacket. His hands were buried deep in its pockets, and he smiled lightly when he saw her.

    Hi.

In spite of everything, she was glad to see him. But she wasn't about to let him know that.

How did you know where I lived? she demanded.

    Kit shuffled in place.

    I... well, I...

Of course. Some cop trick. What do you want, Lieutenant Kitchell?

She'd be damned if they'd be on familiar terms.

Can I... may I come in?

Like I have a choice. He could have her in cuffs if
