Layla Cole

Layla Cole moved three thousand miles for love and is now living out her happy ending in the mountains of North Carolina with her wonderful husband, who can't quite understand why she prefers rainy days to clear blue skies. It's the Oregonian in her, she says.Layla's stories range from erotica to romance, dark to lighthearted, but often include paranormal elements (werewolves are her favorite), strong characters--usually men who can't stop pushing each other's buttons--a dose of humor, hot sex, and (sometimes) true love. When she isn't writing, Layla enjoys gaming, reading, spending time with her husband and adorable but crazy puppy, and (attempting) to cook. She lives for good coffee, good food, lazy days in bed, and last, but definitely not least, her fans. Find her online at laylacole.com or send her an email at laylacolewrites@gmail.com. Logan probably should have waited for Christian outside the Psi Delta house, but the idea didn’t occur to him until he’d already thrown himself into the chaos. He carved out a space in the middle of the red carpet in the entryway and pulled out his phone.

    No messages.

He shouldn’t get his hopes up; after all, he was the one who didn’t know whether his werewolf not-boyfriend was coming. Not for sure. Annie, and by extension Taylor, would give Christian hell if he didn’t show up, though.

He sent a quick text message on the off chance that Christian had been held up.

To Christian: You coming? P.S. I’m the Dread Pirate Roberts. You better know who that is! Black mask, bandana, etc., in case you don’t.

Maybe Christian was already here. Logan searched the crowd, unable to temper his expectations. The low lighting, mixed with the sheer number of people at the party, made his life difficult. Truth was, he wouldn’t have a chance in hell of finding Christian if he didn’t want to be found, especially since Logan had no idea what costume he’d be wearing. Fine. He’d just make himself visible and let Christian do the hunting.

Who knows if Christian wants to find me? We’re not dating or anything. They were barely friends.

He made his way through the entryway, past the knot of people playing Quarters in the living room, and into the dining room, where he sat in one of the free chairs around the table. He’d helped decorate the place yesterday with the Psi Delta pledges and he had to say, the place looked good.

The fake spiderwebs hanging from the chandelier had been his job; he wasn’t a huge fan of heights but he couldn’t say no to Annie. She intimidated him more than the ladder, and since she was both Psi Delta president and Taylor’s girlfriend, he did whatever she said. He’d had to leave before they finished, so he’d missed all the candles that now provided the flickering light, as well as the skeletons arranged behind the table, all dressed in evening gowns and positioned as if carrying on a conversation. The movie theme hadn’t been his first choice, but it worked out well.

Annie swept by in her Velma Kelly costume, her sharp gaze running over the crowd to make sure nothing got out of hand. She pushed dark bangs out of her eyes and sighed. Westley, really?

Yes, Westley, because that’s the best movie ever. He grinned, then started to ask if she’d seen Christian. Too late; she’d already moved on.

So was Taylor, in his dapper suit, supposed to be Billy Flynn?

Logan picked at the candy on the table and amused himself by guessing what people were supposed to be. He glanced at the skeletons and sighed. If I wait much longer, I’m gonna end up like you guys.

Time to move on. He lifted his mask up and scratched the bridge of his nose before standing up, wishing the cold air outside didn’t stop at the door. Too many people.

In the kitchen, Jesse pressed a cup of something fruity and definitely alcoholic into his hand before moving away. Logan squinted at the pink liquid, swirled it around a couple times, and threw it back. If he had to be here alone, he might appreciate a buzz.

Alex walked by with his girlfriend Cass, who’d turned out to be some kind of monster hunter. Logan wished someone would have told him before he had coffee with her, but whatever. She’d dressed up in her hunting gear and claimed it was a costume. Very funny, he thought with a grimace, and finished his drink. Time for another circuit.

When he started following the crowd out of the kitchen, a slender hand caught his wrist.

Excuse me, a female voice said. I’m hoping you can help me find someone.

The voice belonged to a thin redhead, dressed incongruously in a dark green ball gown with a feathered mask that covered half her face. Logan took in the determined set of her jaw and her too-wide eyes, something about her stance making him uneasy. Her gaze flickered over his pledge pin, then swept over the foundation Annie had insisted he wear to cover the hickey on his neck. She narrowed her eyes and inhaled deeply.

I think you know him, she said. Since you’re Alpha Kappa Tau.

    Who?

I can’t remember his name, but he’s about your height. Dark hair. Blue eyes. Oh, and AKT, just like you. A real heart breaker, I’m told.

Christian. Her smiled seemed fake, a little too bright; he didn’t trust her.

No clue, he said, trying to jerk his wrist free, but her grip tightened until her nails dug into his skin.

Sorry, she murmured, but her smile didn’t fade. Are you sure?

    Definitely.

My mistake. She let his hand drop with another fake apology.

He walked past her toward the stairs, nearly choking on the cloud of perfume she wore, and rubbed his wrist. Weird. Either Christian’s party-aversion was starting to wear off on him or he needed more alcohol to deal with shit like this.

    Definitely the alcohol.

Another couple drinks and the beginning of a buzz later, Logan ran smack into a body he was starting to know quite well, more relieved than he’d care to say.

Finally, Christian said, as if he’d been the one angsting about it, and walked him back until they both stood at the edge of the living room, backs against the wall.

Hey, I texted you, Logan protested.

    Lost my phone.

Well, that explained a lot. He let it drop, for now—they had a party to enjoy!

Logan took in Christian’s loose fitting white shirt, dark brown vest, the eyeliner, the brown leather boots and khaki pants, and grinned. Jack Sparrow, huh? Hey, look, we’re both pirates. You don’t have the dreads, though.

Silky black hair fell straight to his shoulders from under his brown bandana, instead. Logan rubbed a strand beneath his fingers and admitted the look suited him.

I put in just enough effort to avoid catching hell from Taylor, so shut up. You’re lucky I came at all. By the way, what is this? Christian tugged the fabric of Logan’s black shirt aside and stared at where the mark on his neck should have been, mouth turning down in displeasure before he wiped the frown away.

Annie said you need to watch your teeth, Logan said into Christian’s ear. She had me cover it up.

Realistically, he knew that even with the loud music, the shouting and laughter of the partiers, Christian would be able to hear him. He didn’t need to stand so close, but he liked trailing his lips over the curve of Christian’s ear and whispering, their bodies pressed together intimately.

I don’t like it. Christian’s hand slid over Logan’s hip, holding him in place as he leaned in to brush his lips over Logan’s neck.

They were kind of an open secret at this point; couldn’t hide much with werewolves around, but they weren’t going to great lengths to flaunt whatever their new status was, either. Not boyfriends. Not quite fuck buddies, either. All he knew was that for the
