According to Taylor, they were bringing an unsuspecting human pledge to their sanctuary and Christian had no idea why. They came to the old house at the edge of the woods to hide every full moon; why bother bringing new people in? Not counting the werewolf pledges, who shuffled in with far too much attitude, like they owned the place already. He leaned against the window, bottle of soda dangling loosely between his fingers, and watched Taylor open the car door with a frown that deepened when the wind shifted, blowing inside the house, and he got a lungful of intoxicating scent.

Not just any pledge. Logan Mathers. Oh, god. Even though the glass protected him, Christian moved away from the window, eyes fixed on Logan as one of the brothers helped him up the steps. They’d blindfolded him, the scrap of black fabric contrasting with his sandy brown hair and hiding his green eyes. Husky laughter almost covered up the way the too-fast tattoo of Logan’s heart betrayed his nerves—almost. The want that spiked through Christian made him feel guilty, but he hadn’t been able to stop since they moment they first met.

The intensity of it scared him sometimes. Logan just had a strong gravitational pull. Even now, despite his resolve, he found himself shuffling forward, swaying toward Logan, feet itching to stand with the brothers who were pushing Logan back against one of the posts and hoisting his hands over his head.

Taylor caught his eye and came inside to join him by the window. He smelled enough of alcohol that Christian wrinkled his nose.

What’s he doing here, tonight of all nights? Christian murmured.
