Taking Him Home - Ashlyn Hunter

Chapter One

Caden

I was halfway to my car with a load of groceries when I caught the most delicious scent. Faint at first, the frigid winds guided his smell to me before whisking it away again. It was something I could never forget. The scent was sweet, but not off-putting. It was almost like a vanilla candle that hadn’t burned very long and had just started to fill the room with warmth. My heat skipped, my balls tightened, and my wolf joined me in my joy.

In my mid-twenties, I’d started to think the whole fated mates deal between shifters was a myth, but it was the first thing that came to mind as soon as I picked up his scent. An omega.

The omega’s scent was still there, strong as ever, the bitterness in the air thicker than I remembered. Was he afraid of me?

Please don’t run, I said, my voice gentle and inviting. I only want to protect you. Man, that sounded lame.

I paused mid-step, picking up a blood trail. His blood trail. Fighting back the nausea in my throat, I looked at the dark drops of blood clinging to the surrounding vegetation.

Not fatal, I assured myself, the trail being far too small to be more than a break in the skin. Still, the longer I weaved between the trees, the more my fears consumed me.

With his blood in the
