The Treasured Omega - Ashlyn Hunter
Chapter One
Tristan
My nostrils flared against the cool night air as my wings snapped open, carrying me on a warm current of air. This was my solitude. My kingdom. From the very edge of the Redtail Ridge all the way to the valley of human settlements, all of it was mine. And yet, it meant nothing. Those who came before me prided themselves on the territory they kept, waging wars to make it so, but I never faced such a struggle. The land practically fell into my lap after my sire passed away, and with him, my guiding light.
As one of the youngest sires in over three centuries, I had to learn most things on my own, including the pursuit of a mate. The council had thrown every dragon my way, but they never filled my belly with fire or my eyes with flame. Having my solitude away from my kind was one thing, but for it to include my heart? It wasn’t fair.
So I flew, skirting around our boundary, never to drift over the border as doing so could start a war. The border was in place to protect my kin as well as the humans on the other side. Just because we dwarfed them in size didn’t mean they couldn’t overcome us. The humans had grown wise over the centuries, building magical weapons that forced us to shift out of dragon form when hit. Last I heard, they even had electrical nets that did the same thing, capturing dragons in the process.
I trembled at the thought and was about to turn back for the palace when my belly filled with heat. Pausing in in mid-air, I hovered high above the treetops as I searched the ground below. Right at the border between the human territory and my own, I found him. His heartbeat raced like a tiny rabbit in my chest, his thoughts melding into my own.
Images flashed through my mind, trees racing past my vision as I shared the human’s sight.
This isn’t happening,
I growled under my breath, clawing at the air as the clouds overhead gave way to a full moon and star-filled night.
He’s our omega,
my dragon said, warring with me as I struggled to hold my ground.
In the human territory. Do you have any idea what will happen if we get caught?
What do you suppose will happen to him if he does the same?
The bottom dropped out of my stomach as I scanned the trees, looking for any signs of movements as I felt more than saw my mate’s hurried approach. Horns sounded in the distance, alerting the humans along the border of an escape. Those same horns alerted the border patrol on my side. As my security jumped into motion, so did I.
Hugging my wings close to my body, I dove from above the treetops, weaving beneath them and narrowly missing a tree. Above me, I heard my security detail as they crashed through the canopy. I never said they were graceful, but then, neither was I. Anything as large as a dragon would be hard pressed not to hit something in these dense woods, but that didn’t stop me.
He’s close.
My dragon urged me forward, an invisible force nipping at my heels as panic crept into my mind.
I shook the offending sensation away, biting back a cry of triumph as soon as I spotted him. His pale shirt was torn, the smell of iron filling my nostrils as I spotted a streak of blood along one of his shoulders.
He’d managed to put some ground between himself and the men chasing him, but even now, I could sense his exhaustion. His breathing was labored. His steps heavy as he reached the border.
Stop him!
the humans called out, my form cutting a straight line through the trees to where they were.
This is gonna sting.
Knowing better than to take on my human form in such a place, I clawed deep furrows into the ground, opening a wing to keep my balance.
My tail lashed behind me as I positioned myself over the panicked human. Mate, my heart beat over and over again.
Mate.
Holding my position, I faced his attackers, lips curling back to show my fangs. Leave him,
I ordered, crouching low to
