    Sidney

The blast from the shotgun reverberated through the lodge house. The sound boomed horribly. Sidney thought he would be sick.

Frasier hiccupped through a sob. Another omega, Barry, clapped his hand over Frasier’s mouth.

Quiet, he hissed in Frasier’s ear. It’ll just set him off again.

Around the table were the remaining omegas of Sidney’s pack. He wasn’t sure they even had a pack name anymore. Chad, their new Alpha, was changing everything and no one knew where they stood.

As the oldest of the omegas, Sidney made it his task to protect the younger ones to the best of his ability. Some were so young they hadn’t had their first heat yet. His throat closed up when he thought about what Chad would do when they did.

The front door banged open and Chad’s bulky frame filled the doorway. He was backlit by the setting sun. Sidney couldn’t make out his features but the hair on the back of his neck rose in sick horror when the scent of gunpowder wafted in.

Having a hen party? Chad mocked. He slammed the door behind him and rested the shotgun against the outer wall. He strolled in to stand at the head of the table.

J-just trying to figure out what to c-c-…cook for dinner is all, Frasier stuttered out. When Frasier was upset, his stammer was really bad. Frasier focused his attention on the table in front of him.

We still have that deer steak, Sidney said quickly. He stood suddenly and went to the deep freezer. Warner— Sidney cut off the rest of his sentence. Bringing up Frasier’s mate, who used to handle meals, risked stirring Chad up into another angry frenzy.

The last time Chad’s temper was out of control, he pistol-whipped Warner until his skull had caved in.

Then he made Frasier clean up the blood. That night broke Frasier and the omega had never been the same.

Warner wasn’t the first pack member Chad killed. By the time the Elders of the pack realized there was a monster in their midst, it was too late to do anything about it. Chad had taken control.

The deer is still good, Sidney finished.

Chad stood at the table, cowing all the other omegas with his gaze before he stepped back. Fine. Make that gravy you do so well, Sid. I gotta haul Hollis’s sorry ass to the ravine before this city slicker Alpha shows up. Barry, grab a couple of the boys to help.

Sidney whirled, the deep freezer lid slamming shut. Um, Frasier can do the steak and I can help. I’m stronger. He risked a step towards the Alpha. The thought of the younger omegas having to deal with a dead body of the last of their Elders was too much for Sidney to even think about.

Chad’s attention snapped to Sidney and the tension in the room thickened to the point he couldn’t breathe. Sidney couldn’t back up fast enough before Chad had him pushed against the freezer. He towered over Sidney by almost a foot and outweighed him by a hundred pounds easy. If you’re so eager for my knot, Sid, that’s all you had to say. You’re my mate now. I’ll always take care of your needs.

Sidney swallowed the bile that rose in his throat. He was not the Alpha’s mate. He was actually supposed to go to another Alpha with another pack. But after Chad had challenged their previous Alpha and won, Chad took what he wanted.

But it was either Sidney, or Chad threatened to take one of the younger omegas.

Looking beyond Chad’s arm at the window, Sidney stayed quiet as Chad’s rank breath choked him. Isn’t that right, Sid? That I’m your mate?

Sidney’s eyes closed and he took a deep breath. Chad was so painfully close it forced Sidney into an uncomfortable lean on the freezer. The lid handle cut into his back. Yeah, he wheezed out softly.

And I say my mate fixes dinner while I get the chores done. Barry, why are you still sitting there?

From behind Chad, the chair clattered to the floor. Right, Chad. Sorry. Give me a few minutes.

Chad leaned in to draw his lips across Sidney’s throat. His rough beard irritated Sidney’s skin. The choking smell of blood, gunpowder and sour sweat threatened the stability of Sidney’s stomach. Make sure to take a bath tonight, Sid baby, he whispered roughly. "Daddy’s feeling the need to make tonight the night to claim you as mine."

Sidney nodded quickly. Sure, Chad. He nearly stumbled when Chad pulled away. Once Chad had disappeared out the door, he sagged to the floor in front of the freezer and buried his face against folded arms.

Frasier was instantly at his side. S-sidney, are you okuh-k-… alright?

No, Sidney said weakly. How did this happen? When did the world turn upside down?

Settling on the floor next to Sidney, Frasier wrapped his arm around Sidney’s shoulder and pulled him in close for a hug. We’ll b-be alright as s-s-soon as that Alpha from the c-city arrives.

Sidney leaned heavily against him and closed his eyes. He doubted that.

Alphas defended their own, even if they were in the wrong.

Before Chad came to the pack, Dan was their Alpha. Dan and the Elders talked about some arrangement with the pack of wolves from the city. Sidney had been told, not asked, told he would be offered in the deal.

No one had asked Sidney what he wanted.

He wasn’t told any more than that. The Elders didn’t say what the arrangements were or what was happening, but they all knew something big was in the works. The Elders had stayed cloistered in meetings with the Alpha a lot before Chad’s purge began, which was why they didn’t know what was happening until it was too late.

Sidney didn’t know what was going to happen to them now.

During dinner, the omegas kept their heads down and focused on their food while Chad pontificated at length on how what he’d done was for the continued survival of the pack.

Sidney exchanged furtive glances with Frasier and Barry at the table. Everyone was afraid of saying anything in the event it sent Chad off. If Chad noticed, he didn’t mention anything.

So, Chad said, spearing a piece of his deer steak and shoving it in his mouth to chew loudly. When this Alpha gets here to talk about whatever the old geezers had agreed to, nobody says anything about it. Don’t try to talk to him. Just stay inside and I’ll get rid of him as soon as I can.

What if he persists? Sidney asked quietly. We’re just omegas, Chad—

I said nobody says anything. You just tell him you’re not allowed to talk to anyone but me, Chad punctuated with his fork. He’s an Alpha, he’ll understand. If he doesn’t like my answers, I’ll take him to talk to Hollis. His grin was twisted and evil. Sidney’s heart gripped tight in his chest.

Their Alpha was a murderer and they were implicit in his crimes.

They couldn’t do a thing. They were stuck, all of them.

Frasier, you keep as many of the young ones out of sight. I don’t want him scenting them. Go up on the north ridge and look for berries or something. Sid can make a pie.

Yeah, Sidney said quickly. That would be great. I still have pie crusts in the freezer.

And no running off. You know what happens when you try to run off, Chad said, focusing on his dinner again.

They were painfully aware of what Chad did. Frasier still woke up from nightmares, screaming.

Chad dropped his cutlery on his plate and pushed away from the table roughly. Sid baby, you know I’m expecting you later.

Right, Sidney said, trying his best to hide his defeat in his voice.

    Don’t keep me waiting.

Chad stripped off his shirt as he stomped to the door to get his shotgun. A pattern of scars crisscrossed his back and chest, no doubt from other Alpha challenges.

Sidney fought dropping into despair. He needed to keep the omegas alive until the Alpha from the city got there. Somehow, he’d figure out how to reach this man, to plead their case.

Did you get me a new bottle when you went to town, Sid?

Sidney jumped up from the table and went to retrieve the fifth of Kentucky Jack. He took it to Chad, who swiped it roughly from him. You know where I’ll be, Sid baby.

He watched as Chad broke the seal on the bottle before drinking heavily from it. If Sidney timed it right, Chad would be passed out by the time for bed.

    Sidney could only hope.

    Aaron

Can you explain to me, in simple terms, please, since I’m having a little trouble grasping your convoluted logic—

Gage huffed impatiently. It’s not my logic, Aaron, it’s all on the Elders, and this deal has been in the works for a while.

—why they didn’t include us in these negotiations? Aaron leaned back in his chair as he sat across from the Weston Pack Alpha, Gage Weston. "Why is this the first time we’ve heard of it?"

And by us, you mean you. Fuck if I know. I think it has to do with an original split from the Samson’s Peak Pack in the forties. Gage tossed a file across his desk. Aaron flipped through the vast array of financial statements, real estate holdings, active status reports…all the necessary bits of information for a merger.

We’re absorbing their pack into ours? Aaron frowned as he looked at the most current bank statements. All of this information is recent. As in received weeks ago.

Gage shrugged. They have some valuable ancestral land on that mountain they’re going to lose in debt. We want it and we can absorb their debt to get it.

Aaron whistled softly. They could be worth millions if handled correctly. Which obviously it hasn’t.

Not only that, they have an infusion of fresh stock of genetic material.

Aaron laughed. Of course, leave it to the Elders to worry about more babies around here.

Hey, are you making a comment about my pup?

Aaron held his hands up. He takes after his Alpha father and that’s all I have to say on that.

    I don’t know if that’s a compliment or not.

Go with compliment. Aaron closed the folder and placed it on the desk. He glanced at his watch. So, if all of this has been negotiated, why am I here and not tending to pack business?

In the negotiations, to prove good will between our packs, one of their omegas has been selected to mate with Ryan Brock.

Aaron groaned quietly. He saw where this was going. And is Brock okay with this?

He hasn’t been told yet. Gage swiveled in his chair and crossed to the window. Aaron joined him to look down at the back lawn.

A group of the pack Alphas and some of the larger betas were divided into two teams for flag football.

The Alphas could get a little rough and the more stout betas were the only ones who could hold up to the punishment. The game was obviously just getting started since there were no injuries limping around. Several omegas stood on the sidelines. Wise.

As the groupings broke from their huddle, Ryan Brock stood out among them, his blond hair almost blinding among the darker coloration of the rest of the pack. His genetics were the proof to the Elders that allowing a new infusion of genetics into the Weston Pack had been a wise decision.

Arranging mates was an antiquated notion that the Elders only recently started to relax. Apparently, they weren’t ready to let go of the tradition just yet. They still insisted that all unattached Alphas mate as soon as
