    Chapter One

Why do I have to get the groceries? Micah demanded from his desk.

His homework lay in front of him, halfway done. Having spent most of the summer working at the auto repair shop, he had plenty to catch up on. It didn’t help Micah was never good with his studies. What he lacked in smarts however, made up for other things.

Your mother’s not feeling well, his father said.

    What about you?

Since his father got laid off from the gas station, he’d done nothing but bum around the house. The familiar scent of beer wafted through his room. Micah’s nostrils flared.

Micah glanced at the wall clock above his head. Half an hour past noon and his father already sounded drunk. Given both of them were shifters, they would need to take a substantial amount of alcohol before it kicked in. No wonder their savings drained too quickly, even with Micah working part-time at the auto repair shop. He rather liked working with the guys. No one judged him there. They simply valued him for his ability to get the job done.

Busy. Are you about to mouth off on me, boy? His father pushed the rest of his bedroom door open. The hinges creaked, but no surprise there. The scarred wood was covered in rake marks and holes made by a fist. It was a wonder the door was still standing. Back when Micah was younger, he was terrified of his father.

He got off his chair and his father blinked, seemingly taken aback by the size of him, as if his old man hadn’t seen him in years. That didn’t surprise Micah. Even before losing his job, his father was seldom home. When he did come home in early hours of the morning, his mother’s cries would jolt Micah awake. That stopped after Micah threatened to tear out the old man’s throat.

His father had only laughed then, but he wasn’t laughing now. Despite being only fifteen, Micah was as large as his father, except instead of a beer
