Why does everything bad, always have to happen to me?! Wanda Goodleigh whined, as she reached the shop. All the other stores had little signs hanging on their doors, saying things like 'Closed for Lunch' or 'Back in One Hour'.

She pushed the shop door open, hearing a tiny bell jingle over her head. She wrinkled her nose in disgust as the sharp smell of the pet store hit her like a hammer. The store stank of pet food, animal droppings, and something else she couldn't quite identify.

Looking at the bead curtain separating the main store from a backroom behind the counter, she decided the strange smell was probably the owner's pot stash.

Wanda glanced at her watch, and cursed her useless secretary, Nadine. If the lazy, good-for-nothing woman hadn't come down with a cold this morning, she wouldn't have to be here at all.

Now thanks to Nadine and her sudden cold, Wanda was going to be late to the most important meeting of her career! A new and wealthy client was arriving today, and if she didn't get back to the office in time to give her presentation, the client might walk!

A horrible thought suddenly came to Wanda; if she lost the new client, the company execs might decide to demote her back to the secretarial pool!! She'd be stuck working alongside Nadine and the other lowly pawns, forever!

Damn you Nadine! Wanda murmured under her breath. It just wasn't fair! Why did everything bad have to happen to her?

The bead curtain twinkled suddenly, as a young, dirty looking man appeared behind the counter. I thought I heard the bell ring. What can I get for you, ma'am?

The greasy looking young man walked thrust his hand out across the countertop, as if expecting her to shake it. Her!

Wanda lifted her nose at the man; not a lot, but just enough to let him know that she would not lower herself to shake his hand. The young man noticed and dropped his hand, looking painfully embarrassed.

Wanda grinned smugly. She so enjoyed putting the little people in their place. Though that thought reminded her where she currently was, and why.

You are the proprietor of this... establishment? She asked, making a point of looking around the grungy shop, and wrinkling her nose again. The man nodded, a touch of anger starting to show through his earlier embarrassment.

My idiot secretary didn't come in today, and so I was forced to drive downtown to pick up my own dry-cleaning, Wanda explained, shaking her head at life's little injustices.

Um... this is a pet store, ma'am. The dry-cleaners is down the street. The store owner interrupted, looking a little smug himself now.

Wanda rolled her eyes, and sighed heavily. For the first time, she looked the man squarely in the eyes. She propped both hands on her hips and bent over the narrow counter, giving him her patented scowl. Far better men than him had cracked under that killer gaze.

I am well aware of that, sir. I already picked up my dry-cleaning. However, it seems my car has ran over one of the broken bottles that are all so common around here, and now I have a flat tire. Wanda said. Her voice was at its very best; biting and acidic. A voice she had hewn to a razor's edge cutting down dozens of rivals on her way up the corporate ladder.

She continued, "Unfortunately, my idiot secretary also forgot to put my spare cell phone in the car before she went home this morning. As such, I need to use your store phone to call a towing service and a cab. I have a very important meeting in an
